I'm sadden

Posted in My Ramblings

I feel very sad today because I have found out that someone has uploaded a unit I created to another group/site.  The thing that saddens me is there is no mention of where they got the file, nor did they ask permission to post it.  I have always willing shared my work with others and have gladly given permission to several people to post it to their site.  I work hard on these units and lapbooks.  All I want is the courtesy of acknowledgement for my work.  I am seriously questioning if I want or should continue to share them so freely.  This is definitely something I'm going to have to pray about.

I have never put the copyright on the pages I create so that it would look nice for your notebooks but I guess I will have to from now on.  And just so you know it is not necessary by law to add the copyright to something for it to be copyrighted.  Here is a site that gives a simple explanation

I am so sorry this happened to you. I first found your site of of Jamin's site. I am really very thankful for both of your sites. You provide lots of great information to those of us who are not as seasoned. I hope that maybe this person just did this without thinking and will see your post and apologize. Please continue to share even if you need to copyright, you do good for so many, I so appreciate all your efforts and your willingness to share. homesklr@coolaccess.net

I'm sorry, too. I finally had to add a "no right click" code to my blog for the same reason. It's very sad that people think your hard work is their no-strings-attached freebie. Even though they could still copy from my site, at least it would take some effort on their part.

But, now I'm realizing that feeds can be copied anyway. I don't know how to get around this.

I'm like you, I share because I want to bless others, but it gets frustrating when you see your stuff on another person's site with not at least a mention of you.

Anyway, I sit here bummed with you. Your things are good and help others. I'll pray for you as you make future sharing decisions.

As a fellow curriculum writer, I think we've all been burned in one way or another by this type of copyright infringement. My pet peeve, though a bit different, is the number of people who want a free sample for their upcoming conferences, and then write me to talk about how they're passing it around and enjoying it so much. You might try writing the person a note, because sometimes people do not realize that they are stealing. Also, if and when you post your unit studies, place a note on top that educates people on how to use the work you've poured your blood, sweat, and tears into. If at that point a person steals from you, they have deliberately disobeyed a law and can and possibly should suffer the ramifications for it, if you'd like to pursue it.

While I'm typing, do you have anything for a lower elementary level for studying the human body? You can write me offline at belinda.bullard@blessedheritage.com. Thanks, and I am saddened, too, that this happened to you.
