This week we will study ducks, the letter D, the color orange, the square shape, and writing numbers 1-5.  I will pick a few activities from each section daily for the kids to do.

Make donuts and shape into letter D’s.  Then let the kids frost them and sprinkle with sprinkles.  Here’s a site where you can get a donut recipe.

Make frosting clay for them to shape into the letter D.

Make dog ears – use construction paper to make a headband and 2 long floppy ears.  Use D stickers to put “spots” on the ears.

Glue dirt (potting soil) to a large cut out of the letter D.

Decorate a cut out of the letter D with things that start with the letter D.  Ex. Diamond shapes, dots, dental floss, stickers of dogs, ducks, dinosaurs, duct tape

Number Activities:

On a piece of construction paper write the numbers 1-5 and then have the child glue the right amount of dried corn under each number.  I plan on using popcorn kernels.

Cut out 10 duck shapes.  On each shape write a number from 1-10.  Then give them feathers to glue around the edge of the duck according to the number written on it.

Cut and paste duck activity.

Color Orange Activities:

Snack ideas: carrot sticks, orange wedges, orange Jell-O, push up pops, orange Kool-Aid, orange juice,

Orange prints:  cut an orange in half and let the children press it into some orange paint.  Then have them press the orange onto some white paper.

Sprinkle a little dry orange kool aid mix onto a piece of paper. Have your child spray water from a spray bottle onto the paper. For added adventure, you may choose to take your children out into the rain with a piece of paper that has kool-aid on it.

Put a small amount of tempera paint in a small shallow container. (The metal lid of a juice bottle works well) Show your child how to dip his/her finger in the paint and make a fingerprint on a piece of paper. (Alternative: Use a non-toxic ink pad) have your child make several fingerprints in several different shades of orange. After the paint dries, have your child draw strings on the fingerprints as if they were balloons. (Alternative: glue on string or yarn.)

Have the children cut out pictures of orange items from magazines. Have the children glue the pictures onto a piece of paper. Laminate the paper and use for a placemat.

Have the children mix yellow and red water to create orange.

You will need a basketball, a large box, paper and paint. Place a
piece of paper in the bottom of the box. Let the children dip the balls
in the paint and drop them into the box. When they are finished pull
out the paper and allow to dry.

Have the children glue apple jacks onto a piece of paper. You could use orange paper, or draw a shape for them on the paper.

Elmo square coloring page

Match the squares worksheet

Square splatter painting:  You’ll need a box, large sheet of white paper, cutouts of squares, paint brush, and a tray with different tempera paints.  Place the large sheet of paper in the box and then let the kids arrange the square cutouts on the paper.  Now the fun part take the paint brush and load it with paint than give a good flick over the paper in the box.  Let them continue until they added all the color they want.  Let it dry and then remove the square cutouts.

Give the children a large square sheet of paper, a smaller one, and smaller one, a smaller one, and smaller one and so on. Have the children glue them on top of each other by size.

Make a Sponge Bob square pants

http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/cartoons/mspongebob.htm

You could get a square paper box from a craft store for them to decorate and use as a treasure box.

Science and Art Activities:

Make duck eggs – you’ll need a small balloon (blown up) newspaper, glue/flour paste, paint.  Using a paper mache technique wrap the balloon with the newspaper.  When dry paint your duck eggs.  (this would also be a great way to talk about a duck’s life cycle)

Make a mobile of a duck’s life cycle.  You could decorate a coat hanger or make a circle out of construction paper to hang the pieces from.

Here are some coloring pages to use.

http://www.alphabet-soup.net/mini/duck.html

http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/eastereggcrafts/l/bleggcolorbl.htm

http://www.kinderart.com/kindercolor/duck1.htm

Make a duck – use this coloring page for the shape of a duck.  Cut the duck out of a heavy paper like card stock or card board.  Have the kids glue feathers on to the duck. They can use orange yarn for the beak and feet.  While doing this activity talk about how a ducks feathers protect it.  http://www.coloring.ws/t/animals/duck4.htm

Make a duck paper plate craft

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/animals/duck/

Fluffy yellow duck craft

http://www.mssscrafts.com/crafts/fluffyduck/

Pipe cleaner duck

Vinegar and Eggs
Well we probably all have seen this at one time or another. Place a hard-boiled egg in a cup of vinegar, and see what happens. It bubbles. After one day, take out the egg, wipe it off with a paper towel and feel the egg. Ask your child questions about what you see and feel.

Talk about what ducks eat.  Then you could take a field trip to feed the ducks.

Songs and Poems Notebook:

Letter D songs

5Little Ducks Song

TEN LITTLE DUCKLINGS

Ten little ducklings.
(Move hands back and forth in waddling motion).
Dash, dash, dash!
Jumped in the duck pond.
(Motion of jumping)
Splash, splash, splash!
When the mother called them,
"Quack, quack, quack."
Ten little ducklings swam right back.
(Motion of swimming).

Orange poems

http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/songspoems20.html

ORANGE IS THE COLOR (Sung to Yankee Doodle)
Orange is the color of,
So many things we see.
Would you like to sing a little,
Orange song with me.
Orange juice and orange cheese,
Orange carrots, if you please.
Orange pumpkins, orange leaves,
Let's sing a song of orange.

Duck Fun:

Picture of a duck to color

http://www.alphabet-soup.net/mini/duck.html

Play duck, duck, goose

Take a duck walk – walk around squatted like a duck and greet each other with quacks.

Take a bubble bath with rubber ducks.

Go on a field trip to watch some ducks.

Go on a duck hunt but use a camera to catch our feathered friends.
