Books:

Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss

Little Elephants trunk by Hazel Lincoln

I’ve got an elephant by Anne Ginkel

Saggy, Baggy Elephant by Golden Books

This week we will study the letter E, elephants, the color pink (I couldn’t resist I’ve watched Dumbo way to many times, you know the song pink elephants), the square shape, counting and writing numbers 1-10.  I’ll pick a few activities from each category to do each day.

Letter E activities:

Pictures of things that start with the letter E.  Make a Large block shaped E on a paper and have them use the pictures to fill it in.

Color Pink Activities:

Make the color pink.  Give the child 3 cups in 1 cup put red paint, in the 2nd put white paint.  Give them spoons to use and let them mix the red and white paint in the 3rd cup to make pink.  Then they can use their paint to paint a picture.

There is an activity onthis page called cotton candy for them to do.

Color the pig pink

Color pink worksheet

http://www.dltk-teach.com/colors/worksheets.htm

Make your own pink elephant.  Use this coloring page of an elephant for them.  Take pink tissue paper and cut into 1 inch squares.  The child will then take the square of paper and twist it around the eraser end of a pencil then glue it onto the elephant.

Tear art:  Tear pieces of pink construction paper and glue them onto the square template.

http://www.abcteach.com/basicshapes/square.htm

Make pink cupcakes with pink frosting.

Rubbings – use a pink crayon and white paper.  Go around the house and do rubbing on different surfaces.  Anything with texture will work.

Mix red and white tempera paint together in a shallow dish.  Have the kids use a small car and run it through the paint.  Then they would run the car over paper to make pink tire tracks.

Look through old magazines and cut things out that are the color pink.  Glue them to a piece of construction paper to make a collage.

Counting Activities:

Cut out several copies of this elephant.  Then write a number on each.  Have the kids put the right number of peanuts to the number on the elephant.

Use peanuts for counting and for simple addition and subtraction problems.

You could use peanut shell halves for a memory game.  You could stick small round stickers on the inside and then place them upside down.  Let the kids find the matches.

Five Gray Elephants
Five gray elephants, marching through the glade,
Decide to stop and play like they are having a parade. The first sings his trunk and announces he'll lead;
The next waves a flag which of course they need.
The third gray elephant trumpets a song;
The fourth beats a drum as he marches along.
While the fifth makes believe he's the whole show
And nods and smiles to the crowd as they go.
Five gray elephants, marching through the glade,
Having a lot of fun during their parade.

Edible Peanutty Play dough

1/2 cup. Dry milk
1/2 tbs. honey
Knead all ingredients in a zip lock bag. Use the dough to make edible sculptures (even peanut-loving elephants!). You can even decorate the sculptures with raisins or candies. A fun activity and a yummy snack.
