The Changes going on around here.

©2008 JoAnn

This year is going to be a year of many new adventures!  I have been praying about each one and believe this is what is meant to be at this time.  So here is what is happening and hopefully you'll see how they all work together.

First, I've decided to enroll my oldest son in our local christian school.  I know your thinking I thought she was going to homeschool through high school, well so did I.  Let me explain what has brought this on.  My son has reached a point in his life where he needs to have more male influence in his life.  I prayed for months for God to show me what to do.  See my husband goes to school in the mornings and works in the afternoons.  He is gone before the kids get up and comes home after they are asleep.  My son needs to be around some godly men in a consistent way.  Moms are great but I think we can only teach our sons so much about becoming a man.  Well the christian school announced in May that they will be opening up for high school levels.  When I heard this I did not think this was the answer to my prayers because most of the teachers are female.  (Don't get me wrong I have nothing against female teachers, I am solely thinking about what my son needs.)  Later in June I find out that the teachers for the high school will be 2 men that I highly respect and often use as examples for my sons.  So I prayed, "is this where I should put him?"  After some investigating, asking lots of questions, and more prayer, I've come to the place where I feel at peace about this.  I will admit at first I was reluctant to do this after all I feel I should be a part of my son's life also.  I was afraid of not having time with him because he'd be at school all day and then sports practice or games almost every evening.  But you'll see how God works everything out.

So the next thing to happen is I volunteer to cook for a youth rally at our church.  After the event the christian school's director's wife, asks me if I'd be interested in cooking lunch for the school.  Well I guess someone liked my cooking. LOL  I said I'd have to pray about it and let them know.  Well after much prayer over it, I came to the decision that I could do it a few times a week but they would have to find someone else for the other days.  Just so you know our christian school is small there are only 40 kids.  Oh and my other children will be with me.

Then I stopped into the school to talk with the director, who is also our youth pastor, about the upcoming teen camp trip.  He gets this real serious face and said, "I've been meaning to talk to you."  My first though oh no what did he do, what did I do.  He then starts laughing and says I have a question for you.  I must have had that deer caught in head lights look or something.  Well anyways, he asked if I would be interested in teaching high school math.   Well, um, hmmm...... I don't know.   My first thought was how did he find out that I like math?  When I get home I drill my son to see if he had opened his mouth. LOL  Its not something I go around telling people after all they think I'm weird enough without additional help. LOL  So I still don't know why he asked me.  I'll have to remember to ask him that one.  To make a long story short I kept looking at my schedule and praying about it.  I was pretty direct in my prayers.  Lord if this is what you want me to do, the only spot I see where I can do it is in the mornings.  And we both know that I'm of little use in the mornings.  (See I'm pretty stiff and sore in the mornings.  I have a hard time getting around.)  You'll have to give me the strength and ability to do it.

Shortly after I started praying this, someone turned me on to eating tart cherries for arthritis.  OK I'll try it.  To me this was obviously information meant for me.  Well after eating my portion of cherries for a week, my morning pain went away.  I started crying when I realized I could make a fist in the morning.  You have no idea how long it has been since I was able to do that.  I've even started wearing my wedding bands again because the swelling has gone down enough to get them back on.   So I have my answer.  I guess I'm teaching high school math this year.

Now to some this may seem like a series of coincidences but I know it is the Lord's doing.  Do you see how it all worked together?  I just praise God for taking such good care of us!  He works out all the details and even gives us our heart's desire.  I know I'm going to be one busy momma this year but I'll be one busy momma following God's plan for my life at this time.  It may change in the future but for now this is what I'm doing.

What I've been up to

©2008 JoAnn

I know your all dying to know why I haven’t been posting or commenting on blogs much lately.  LOL  Besides the kitchen remodel, I’m building a website.  Well and the other usual stuff like laundry, schooling, housework, and so on.  I’ve been feeling stretched a little thin with the different groups and blogs, so I decided to consolidate.  My hope is by concentrating my energy on one project, I’ll have more free time.  My heart’s desire is to help other people be able to afford to homeschool.  With the way the education system is I’m sure there are people out there that would like an alternative but think it will cost too much.  Of course, I want to help current homeschoolers too.

It took me awhile to find a free host that didn’t have a ton of pop-ups and other ads all over it.  My hope is to eventually move it to a better domain that has more bandwidth and better features.  Unfortunately that cost money.  As I was contemplating what to do about that, I had a few companies contact me about becoming an affiliate.  After looking through what products they offer and the price of those products, I’ve chosen a few that I feel are good.  I also declined a few.  I don’t want to advertise something I wouldn’t use myself.  I feel by placing there ad on my site I’m giving it a stamp of approval.  So that is one way I’m going to help finance the move.

Another way is by offering some products I make for a small fee.  I’m thinking $10 or less depending on the size and amount of work I put into it.  Of course these will be better than the free stuff I make as they will be paid for.  I bought a really cool program to help with this.  All the funds generated will be to help maintain and upgrade the site.  My hope is to make it a fantastic resource for homeschoolers by providing an array of services and materials.  I guess I’m telling you this because I don’t want you to think I’m doing it to just make money.

Well there you have it.  That is what I’ve been doing.  I’ll post the link to the site as soon as I’m satisfied with it and I’ve finished putting all the pages together.

Have a blessed day!

Update on the Kitchen remodel

©2008 JoAnn

First before I show you pictures of the progress.   Here is what the kitchen looked like before.  I remembered to take pictures after we had started clearing it out.

The view from the dining room doorway

From the back door

And this is the wonderful floor I had

Now this is the progress.  We still have things to do but dh had to go back to work today.  So we'll finish the rest this weekend.  Right now I'm in the mist of putting things back in the kitchen, hence the mess.

From the dining room doorway

from the dining room doorway looking at the back door.  As you can see we still need to add some trim.

and my new floor!

Now obviously we still have a ways to go.  When we get all finished, I'll post those pictures.  But it all ready feels like such a huge change.

What I'm up to

©2008 JoAnn

Well it has been a very busy week.  We are in the process of remodeling the kitchen.  My house is such a mess! LOL  I never realized how much stuff the kitchen holds until it is all over the house.  My kitchen sink is literally sitting in the middle of the school room along with the stove and fridge.  The kitchen table and chairs are in the living room.  Everything else is just crammed where it can fit.  It has been like this since Weds.  I'll post pictures of before and after when we finish.

The Puppet Theater

©2008 JoAnn

Here is the pictures of the puppet theater.  I tried to take a full length one but it kept coming out dark no matter where I stood to take it.  I think it is because it is in a doorway.

And yep that is ply wood across the bottom of the window because it is the playroom and I don't want to worry about it getting broke.

Just a quick post

©2008 JoAnn

Just wanted to let you all know that I'm alive and that I'll get to the comments and tags soon.  I've been pretty much bedridden this week due to my RA.  I'm starting to be able to move around now but sitting for too long is quite painful.  Unfortunately I don't have a laptop to work on so I've been slow in getting computer stuff done.  On the bright side I am getting a lot of reading done. LOL  My first priority is to get the house back under control, so it may be several more days before you see another post from me.  You'd be amazed at how quickly things turn to chaos when mom isn't overseeing everything.  At least they are getting their schoolwork done.  I'm just thankful the older boys have been helping out this week.  Hope you are all doing well!

Have a blessed day!

Oiy! It's been crazy around here.

©2008 JoAnn

I know I haven't posted in a week and I've been neglected my group and blogs but sometimes life gets in the way. LOL  We had been fighting colds around here.  Everyone is finally healthy.  Praise God!  I don't know how much more I could've handled.  Pumpkin has been averaging 2 to 3 basketball games a week plus practices.  This of course is on top of our usual stuff so we haven't been around home much lately.  Though I have  had time to check in on a couple of message boards, I haven't had time for much else.  Things are finally starting to find a routine though, so that is good.  I did have a RA flare up last week which made things seem worse I think.  I have also come to the conclusion that metal bleachers are a form of torture that was probably invented by some disgruntled child. LOL

Dh is taking classes again this semester.  He signed up for 1 class that he has to attend and one internet class hoping to spend more time at home.  The suprise is the 1 class he has to attend meets everyday in the morning and it don't make sense to drive the hour home after class.  So we are actually seeing less of him this semester.  On a positive note mandatory overtime at his job has finally quit.  Now we at least have him home on the weekends.  His new schedule is making it hard to get the kids to bed.  They want to stay up to see dad.  I can't say I blame them but with their activities if we don't get up by 9am there is not enough time in the day to get it all done.   So they can't wait up till 1am for dad.

Now that things are finally finding a groove, hopefully I'll be able to get back to things here on the net.  It probably won't be as regular as it was but at least better than I've been doing.

On a happy note dh bought me a couple of books.  Yeah!  I just love books!  He bought me my first study Bible.  I'm thrilled I've been wanting one for a long time just never could bring myself to spend the money.  I had been using resources online along with my well worn Bible.  He also bought me the book "Culture Warrior" by Bill O'Reilly.  I'm on chapter 7 right now.  Let me just say it is a very interesting read.  I don't know if I agree with everything but a lot of it does make perfect sense to me.  There are a few people he mentions that I will have to do some research on and a book he mentions that I want to read just to verify.  Well because I'm that kind of person, I like to see for myself.  There is one thing I do definitely agree with and that is that America is in the midst of culture war.  Just look at what the ACLU has been up to.  I really don't like them.  There all about protecting your freedom as long as your not a Christian.  I'm not intolerant but I do have beliefs of what is right and what is wrong.  And I will not apologize for them.  There was an interesting artice today on the Home Where They Belong blog about tolerance, she explained it beautifully.  Ok I'm going to stop because I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about this stuff. LOL

Have a blessed day!

I'll post a menu plan for all this soon.

A Grocery Challenge

©2008 JoAnn

Well after looking over the budget and looking at some things we want to do around here.  I decided it was time to tighten the belt on the grocery budget.  We are also cutting cost in other areas but this is the one I want to concentrate on here.  I thought it would be fun to make it a meme but I'm having a hard time coming up with a suitable title.  Once I think of a name I'll get a Mr. Linky.  So does anyone have any suggestions?

Here's my goal for January $450.  I haven't gone grocery shopping this month yet.  My first trip to the store will be on Friday.  I'd really like to come in under that, but considering I have to go to Sam's this week to stock up on a few things, I highly doubt it.  I'll post what I spend when I go to the store.  Oh by the way this is for all paper products, food, and cat supplies.  Wish me luck.

Christmas Crafts

©2008 JoAnn

Well I've been busy sewing my little fingers to the bone. LOL  I have finally finished the puppets.  I made 3 of each one.  So that all the younger kids will have their own set.  I stitched them all by hand in an old fashioned kind of way.  I thought it would look cute.  That and my sewing machine has decided to puke and dh hasn't had a chance to look at it.  I also made the crayons.  I think they turned out pretty cute.  I picked up some Christmas coloring books from the Dollar Tree to go with them.  I plan on putting them in the stockings.

Here's some picks of the puppets and crayons.

Christmas Cards

©2008 JoAnn

Last night I finished up the last blanket and I made Christmas cards.  Finishing up the last blanket turned out to be harder than I expected due to this.

Zac kept jumping up on the material and rolling around trying to get my attention.  When I finally finished the blanket I moved onto the cards.  Here's some pics of them.

Here's the inside of a couple.  I had to cover the names because I already signed them.

They are made from recycled Christmas cards.  I like to add a Bible verse to each.  This year I picked Luke 2:11.  I have some Christmas stamps I use to jazz it up a bit.

This morning my sis stopped by and saw the blankets I had made for the kids.  She asked if I was making her one for Christmas because she sure would like one.  I guess I'll be making her one too.  At least I don't have to try and guess what to get her. LOL

My sister knows me so well.  She stopped over to give me my Christmas gift because she couldn't wait to Christmas.  She bought me a cookbook entitled "Depression Era Recipes".  There is all kinds of recipes in it from your basics to making soap.  I can't wait to dig into it.  I love getting practical gifts.  Thanks sis.

Blankets and apron

©2008 JoAnn

Last night I stayed up and finished three of the kids' blankets.  I still have one more to do.  I used a print on one side and a solid on the other side.  Peanut's and Princess' is 1 1/2 yards long and Peewee's is 2 yards long.  I simple layered the fleece and then trimmed off the rough edges.  I then cut a 3x3 inch square out of each corner.  Then I made 3 inch cuts about 1 inch wide all around the edges.  Next I simply tied them together.  I think they turned out really cute.  Here's some photos of the ones I have done.  They aren't the greatest as I took them in my room which is poorly lit.  After all I can't let them see them yet. LOL

Princess' blanket

Peanut's blanket

Peewee's blanket

And here is a photo of one of the aprons.  I've wrapped the other ones already.

As you can see I deviated from the original pattern.  I thought it be cute to make them more like little chef aprons.  These were actually very easy to make and cheap.  I spent about $3.00 on each.

Here's the link if you'd like to make one - dishtowel apron

See what I bought

©2008 JoAnn

Now I usually don't buy myself much.  You know how it is being a mom, you always buy for the kids and forget about yourself.  Well Friday when I was at Sam's I saw this really cool scrapbooking kit and it was only $18.  Now if your a scrapbooker you know you can easily spend that on one scrapbook, so I considered it a good buy.  Besides doesn't mom deserved to be splurged on once in awhile.  Here's what I got.

They had one in another color that I'd love to have honey.  *wink *wink

An Uneventful Week

©2008 JoAnn

Well I don't have much to report this week.  Why?  Because we played hookey all week.  Shhh don't tell anyone.  LOL  Well we did do some art and we did some reading.  I decided to just take the week and regroup.  I'm feeling better now.

Peanut had his first soccer game on Tues.   Apparently it is more fun to pretend to be an airplane and fly around the court than to actually play soccer. LOL  I tell ya that coach is a saint!  I don't think I could coach 4yr. olds.  His big brother is now working with him so maybe he'll play next game.  It warms my heart to see my 14yr. old out there trying to teach his little brother to play soccer.  He's so patient with him.  That has to be one of the best benefits of homeschooling!

Today I got to go grocery shopping by myself!  Can you believe it?  My sister kindly offered to watch the kids for me while I went.  Isn't she so sweet.  Love ya sis!  The best part I actually stuck to the grocery list and only spent $200 for 2 weeks worth of groceries.  So I had a little money left over to buy some Christmas gifts.  Of course you have to hit the cheaper stores first to see what they have.  I found some really cute baby doll clothes at Dollar Tree.  Now Princess will get 3 new outfits for her baby and it only cost me $3.  Can't beat that.  I then hit Dollar General.  There I got a Barbie jeep for $5 and a set of tinker toys for $10.  I'm going to give the tinker toys to Peanut.  I found a few things at Big Lots for the older boys but I can't tell you what they are because silly me just had to teach them how to read. LOL  It was nice to go shopping by myself.  It's a rare treat.

I'm still alive

©2008 JoAnn

I'm still here.  I just haven't had much to say.  I've been under the weather lately.  We're still rather busy around here but things seem to be finding a groove.  I feel good about the decisions we've made with our schedules.  This is C's last week to be with us so next week will hopefully be easier yet.

I also decided to undertake a huge task.  Over on the google group I decided to search the net and find enough free things to make up a curriculum for each year of homeschooling.  There is a ton of stuff out there.  It can be overwhelming sometimes.  It's coming along, slowly but surely.  So now you know where I've been hiding.

I'm putting together a unit study on Egypt.  Below is what I have so far.  I'm planning on doing a section on Ancient Egypt to go with it but haven't done it yet.  So do you think it is thorough enough?  Does it have enough hands-on to keep it interesting?  Any opinions are welcome.  I've got my big girl panties on. LOL

Please remember though this is a rough draft so don't pick on my grammar too much. LOL

Ongoing Activities:

  1. Timeline of the history of Egypt
  2. Vocabulary words – these should be words that come across that they are unfamiliar with

A Closer look at Ancient Egypt –

Geography:

Activity 1:

On your map of Egypt locate the following and mark them:

Mountains,

Deserts,

Forest,

Rivers,

Lakes,

Body of waters that border Egypt,

Countries that border Egypt,

Cairo,

Alexandria,

Giza,

 Berenice,

Large piece of cardboard

Newspaper

Paper Mache glue mix

Scrap pieces of cardboard like toilet paper tubes, cereal boxes (things you can use to hold the shape of a mountain)

Sand

Tempera paint

Pebbles

Glue

Paint brushes

Map

Procedure:

On the piece of cardboard use your materials to construct your own topographical map of Egypt.  Make the mountains out of paper mache.  Use the sand for deserts.  Paint in the bodies of water and grassy areas.  You could make trees out of construction paper or twigs and things from nature.  Be creative with your map.  You could also make little houses or paint dots where the major cities are located.

Activity 2:

Using a map of Egypt use the following coordinates of latitude and longitude to find the city located there.

Latitude 30.01N by Longitude 31.14E,

Is there a state in the United States that is of comparable size?

What is the total population of Egypt?

Which city has the largest population?

What percentage is this of the total population?

What is the highest elevation in Egypt?

What is the lowest?

What is the difference between these two?

Activity 4:

List Egypt’s natural resources and mark the map with their locations.

Explain Egypt’s climate.

Draw a picture of the Egypt’s flag

People & Culture:

What is the main religion of Egypt?

What are some of the beliefs of this religion?

What holidays do they celebrate in Egypt?

Pick one and explain why and how it is celebrated.

What kind of food do they eat?

Pick a recipe to try at home.

What kinds of languages are spoken in Egypt?

What is the main language of Egypt?

Pretend you are going to take a 3 week tour of Egypt.  Look up information and plan the itinerary for your trip.  Remember to think about transportation, sights, lodging, and eating.  You may also want to find out their customs so you don’t offend your host country while visiting.  For example you may not want to shake someone’s hand with your left hand because that is the hand they use to wipe after going the bathroom.

You will also need to figure out how much this trip would cost you.

Make a meal native to Egypt. Serve it to your family in the custom, traditional to Egypt.

Find a copy of the national anthem to include in your notebook and see if you can find a recording of it to listen to.

Look through newspapers and magazines to find articles relating to Egypt.

What is the typical dress of Egyptians their today?  Make an outfit

Government:

What is Egypt’s current government?

Has this always been their form of government?  If not what other types of government have they had?

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/africa/egypt_admn97.jpg

How is Egypt’s modern government set up? Make a diagram to show your findings.

How was the government set up during Ancient Egypt’s time? Make a diagram to show your findings.

Do a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting these 2.

How are government positions filled in modern Egypt’s government?

Economy:

What is the currency of this country?

What is the exchange rate with American money?

What is there major export/import?

Pretend you’re a business man in Egypt.  Make sure to base your decisions on the typical business found in Egypt.

What kind of business would you have?  What would you sell?

Now make yourself a catalog showing your merchandise.  Staple several sheets of cardstock together to form the base of your catalog.  Now draw or find photos of the things in your store.  Remember to add some hype to sell your products and list the prices in American and Egyptian money.

You could take your business a bit further by making some things from your shop and setting up a mini shop at home.  Make some currency from Egypt for your store and your customers.  Then play store using Egyptian money.  You could even use play American money so you could learn more about the exchange rate.

Using the sheets that have images of Egyptian money, find the name of the currency and how much it is worth.  Is it modern or ancient money?

Art & Architecture:

Build a mini-museum of some of the historical artifacts that are still in the country.  You can use a cardboard box to make the building.  Use clay, playdough, paper mache, or drawings to create your artwork for your museum.  Use a diorama style for your museum.

Hello All!  I just wanted to let you all know that I have started a Google group.  It is called Homeschooling on a Budget.  I just started it so it has one lonely member, yours truly.  I have uploaded some files I've created.  I thought it would be easier to share some info this way.  Don't worry I'll still post things on here I'll just put the stuff in pdf's in the group.  There will also be some things that you can only find there.  I hope to make this a resource we can all add to and benefit from.  Well if you would like to join you can go here and apply.

Have a blessed day!

What do you think?

©2008 JoAnn

If you remember in one of my tags I mentioned that I don't really use measuring cups and spoons much.  I have some family members that ask for my recipes and I can give them what I put in but without exact measurements.  So along these lines I was thinking of doing something for a Christmas present for these people.  I thought if I make an effort to write down the recipes and measure as I making them.  Then I could print up a cookbook for them on nice paper and put it in protective sleeves.  Get it bound maybe.  I also thought if I added some photos of the kids and I cooking it or stuff like that it would be a nice gift.  What do you think?  Is that a good idea or is it cheesy?
