Starting Point

Posted at 10:27 AM on Apr. 10, 2006

I started the "homeschool adventure" feeling excited and confident God had lead us down this path to homeschool which of course was totally out of my realm of "acceptable" options  four years ago (before having kids!).

I thought, "this'll be great!"

Then, my son (3 1/2) was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome a month ago.

To say  my world was turned upside down is not an exaggeration.  I was told immediately that homeschooling was NOT an option for this child.

So, I begin my journey.

homeschool that Asperger's Child

Whoever told you that homeschooling was not an option for your Asperger's child may be leading you in the wrong direction. Of the Asperger's children I have come to know as adults (or who are now adults) everyone of them (except my sweet hubby who never knew he had Asperger's until adulthood) who is a truly well-adjusted, productive member of society was homeschooled at least for a large portion of the time. It seems that homeschooling for these children is most important in the teen years when the pressures of social groups can be so heavy.

In our years of working with special needs homeschoolers and their families, my husband has learned enough to realize that he has/had at least mild Asperger's. (I discovered the same thing about dyslexia for myself, but that is another story for another day.).Though he never had a formal diagnosis or special treatment, he earned a college degree and worked productively for many years prior to his stroke. He would never win any coingeniality awards, hates crowds, and could probably not have done well in a 'people-oriented' profession, but as a computer
'geek' with a close circle of friends and famliy, he has had a good life.

Please don't despair. Let God take this for you. If you feel led to homeschool this child, don't let someone else deprive you or him of the experience, no matter how many degrees or years of training that person has. You still know your child best, and God knows both of you best of all.

Asperger's Syndrome

Posted by ilovemy3angelbabies at 10:10 PM on Aug. 25, 2007
Hi, Alicia. I have enjoyed reading your blog. My name is Laura and I also have a son named Steven, 13, who has Asperger's. This is our first year homeschooling and I regret not having done it sooner! We were always told that he NEEDED to be in public school because he NEEDED the socialization, as that is a difficult aspect of life for most AS kids. (Funny.....I thought you went to school to learn?) What Steven really NEEDED was to be taught in a loving, caring, nurturing environment where he is able to work at HIS own pace whether it be fast or slow....depending on the day.

My reason for blogging was to hopefully find other familes who were homeschooling their AS kids. Are there any other bloggers that you know of that do?

Glad I found you!
Laura
