Dear Friends,
Since this coming weekend marks the "official end" of Summer vacation
season here in the USA, we thought we'd bring you a couple of "just for
fun" Labor Day vacation programs to listen to as you enjoy your holiday.
So...
First up, we feature the Labor Day episode of the Quiz Kids, a popular
question and answer program from September, 1950. Quiz Kids consisted
of host Joe Kelly asking questions of five extremely bright kids, whose
breadth of knowledge about obscure things is downright amazing.
This entertaining and very educational episode of Quiz Kids starts with
the question:
"Why would you be wise to choose a picnic spot for your Labor Day picnic near a good supply of Gambusia Afinus?"
Hmmm... Do YOU know? Well, these youngsters sure do! You and your
kids will really get a kick out of this fascinating program. And
be SURE to keep an ear out for contributions from five year old
Angus -- he's amazing!
Next, we bring you an episode of "Father Knows Best", where the
Anderson family is simply trying to set out on their vacation... but
things keep going awry. There's lots of laughs in this fun episode
starring RobertYoung, which was originally broadcast in July, 1952.
Here's the link to this week's programs: CLICK HERE! Hope
you and yours have a wonderful family time this weekend. We'll see you
next week as we head back to the books with another "living book for
the ears" program!
Best Wishes,
The Erskine Family

33blog Hello homeschoolblogger folks,
Well, this week over at homeschoolradioshows.com, we've got a handful
of our most popular past programs ("reruns" if you will) for you to
"tune in" and enjoy. If you haven't heard these yet, here's your chance
to joinin the fun... and mystery.
Adventures in Research: The Mysterious Pirate Pit

Almost
200 years ago, three boys found an odd tree and a shallow round pit on
deserted Oak Island in Nova Scotia and realized that they may have
actually stumbled across buried pirate treasure. But when they started
to dig... they were amazed and mystified at what they found. This is an
amazing story about one of the most mysterious and fascinating puzzles
ever devised. Originally broadcast in the late 1940's on the syndicated
program "Adventures in Research". (Note: The volume is a tad low on
this show, but the sound is otherwise excellent.)
The Great Gildersleeve tells the story of RUMPELSTILTSKIN
Next, we have a great retelling of this
classic fairy tale by the one and only Great Gildersleeve (Harold
Peary) from his children's album "Stories for Children as told by the
Great Gildersleeve". Classic storytelling at it's best!
 Also,
for you folks new to homeschoolradioshows, our unofficial singing
mascots here on this site are Big Jon & Sparky. Big Jon was radio
personality Jon Arthur who in the 1950s had a great children's program
called "No School Today". Big Jon did all the voices for his program,
and one of them was a magical-elf-who-wished-he-was-a-boy named Sparky.
"Together" they did some way fun songs that we periodically bring back
here on the site because 1) people keep asking us to bring them back,
and 2) because they are just plain FUN. This week, we bring you two of
our most requested favorites: The E-I-O Song and Little Red Caboose. If you've got younger kids in your household, you HAVE to listen to these! However, these do come with a Warning: Your kids will want to hear these over and over and over and they may drive you nuts!

Current Issue The Erskine Family's "LIVING BOOKS FOR THE EARS" Newsletter A free service of www.homeschoolradioshows.com August4, 2005
In this issue: Donald's Vacation Adventures
Dear Friends,
Quiet week here on the homestead, as all the kids are
elsewhere. Daughter is having a big time visiting her Aunt in the Big
City where there are zoos, restaurants, parks and shopping galore...
Son #2 is still at the mammoth Boy Scout Jamboree near Washington DC...
and of course, Son #1is out on his own, this week training for a local
factory job. (Steady paycheck and interesting learning experience, to
be sure. Does the learning EVER stop?).
It has been nice with just the two of us here at home this week.
Nice...but... kinda weird with no kids around at all. I mean it is just
a little TOO quiet. It's a taste of "empty nest", and I'm just glad the
real thing is still a few years off. I don't think either one of us are
anywhere near ready for it yet.
Meanwhile, I can't believe it... but SCHOOL is starting
back NEXT WEEK here in our county! The public schools around here have
switched to a "year-round school" schedule, with shorter Summer breaks
and longer Spring and Fall breaks.
Gee whiz...
Whatever happened to lazy, hot August days... where Summer seemed
endless, and you eventually got tired of going swimming and fishing,
mowing the lawn and playing ball, reading and exploring... and were
actually READY to hit the books in September (AFTER Labor Day)?
I
don't know... that's the way it seemed to me when I was growing up. But
nowadays, most kids spend their summers in front of the TV, on the
computer, or at the mall... and they really ARE ready to head back to
school. Go figure.
As for me, I'd like Summer to keep on rolling along for a little while
longer. August is too precious a commodity to burden down with
schedules and lesson plans. So once we get the kids back home later
this week (and they recover from their respective trips) we'll plan a
few more summery things, and put school on hold a couple weeks longer.
I have a feeling they won't mind a bit.
Best Wishes,
The Erskine Family

Back in August of 1947, just after
finishing the movie "Fun and Fancy Free", THE Donald was allowed to
take an summer vacation too. Here's the story of his adventures, as
told by the Duck himself. Guests on this show include Dinah Shore and
Willie the Giant, both from the aforementioned movie. It also includes
a neat interview with Clarence Nash, who was the"voice" of Donald for
decades. This fun and unusual "audio cartoon" was originally broadcast
on August 23, 1947 on the children's program NBC StoryShop. Warning: Younger
kids will especially love this, and probably will want to hear it over
and over -- but beware of the duet between Dinah Shore & Donald.
Ouch!

Dear Friends, 98
degrees and humidity into the stratosphere. It is just way too hot here
to do anything outside on the homestead today. I'm spending my day
typing away inside on the computer, trying to remain oblivious to "that
which needs to be done elsewhere". Wife walked by a few minutes ago and
reminded me that there is yard work to be done out "there". "Yard
work"? What is this thing you call "yard work"? Sorry, but I do not
understand your words.
Last night, Susan made a big pitcher of ice cold lemonade, and we all
went out and sat on the porch in the dark, hoping for a breeze. With
the dogs snoozing at our feet, we watched the fireflies dance in the
field, and the stars swirl around overhead. I turned on the MP3 player
and we sat there in the dark, listening to this week's show. As we sat
there getting into the drama, we watched the moon came up over the
trees, all gold and hazy. A coyote down by the river decided to howl at
it. The dogs heard her, erupted into an explosion of barks and bolted
into the night, scaring us half to death.
Well...
Once the adrenaline ebbed... we went inside and listened to the rest of the show.
It still got us all choked up, so it's a good one. Enjoy!

OKAY... nowonward to This Week's Program: TheMan Without A Country
There
are few tales charged with stronger patriotism than breathes from this
narrative of a man who “loved his country as no other man has loved
her; but no man deserved less at her hands.” — Henry Seidel Canby
"The Man Without A Country" is Edward
Everett Hale's haunting and patriotic tale of Philip Nolan, a young man
enamored of the charismatic Aaron Burr. He participates in Burr's
mystery shrouded empire building scheme, for which Burr was charged
with treason. But while Burr and the other leaders escape
punishment, Nolan is convicted. When the presiding judge offers
him an opportunity to prove his loyalty to the United States, Nolan
replies in fury: "D---n the United States! I wish I may never hear of
the United States again!"
...and...
for the next 50 years he gets his wish.
This is a powerful and poignant tale -- the ultimate "think before you
speak" story -- that you will long remember. This classic episode
of "Family Theater" was originally broadcast on June 7, 1950.
PARENTS READ THIS NOTE! We're telling you this upfront,
because we don't want any emails fussing at us: Be aware that the
protagonist of this story at one point does indeed yell out "D**n the
United States!" This is a crucial turning point in the story, portrayed
exactly as written in the original book. It is not done for
sensationalistic reasons -- it is a vital part of the story being told.
(You may wish to "preview" this yourself just at 6 minutes into the
story if you are so inclined.) We could have spliced this out of the
story, but it is a key point in the plot and the original book, so we
have allowed it to remain. Obviously in 1950 the producers of "Family
Theater", a programspecifically for family listening, with a Christian
viewpoint, felt the same way. If this is not acceptable to you, PLEASE
DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS STORY!

Among
the great documents of our American past is the Declaration of
Independence. It was young Thomas Jefferson who wrote that Declaration,
assisted in part by both John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Here is the

the events that influenced his philosophy, language and rhetoric which
are reflected in the Declaration. This fine episode of Cavalcade of
America was originally broadcast on May 25, 1942. NEW!Baby Snooks Learns to Be Kind to Animals
Well,
after all sorts of requests from y'all for YET MORE Baby Snooks, we
unearthed another episode from the "Baby Snooks Learns"album from 1949.
This time around, we find Snooks at the zoo, where she learns that it
is not the smartest thing in the world to tease animals, especially if
one of them is a gorilla! Letus know if you want more Snooks, and if so, in weeks to come, we'll post a couple of her RADIO SHOWS here for you to enjoy!

Dear Friends,
It doesn't seem very long ago that this happened...
I was busily tap tapping away at the computer in my office (the
converted storage barn) when ten year old Jessica quietly
entered and stood at my side, just watching.
"Dad?"
"Yes, Jessica?"
"Are we still sending out our favorite radio shows to people over the
internet?"
"Yes we are. In fact, that is what I am working on right now."
"Okay." Pause. "Dad?"
"Yes, Jessica?"
"Whose favorites are they?"
"Well, they're the ones you kids have liked the most with your school
work. All the good book stories you've been listening
to."
"Oh. Those ARE good." Pause. "So... then you've put MY favorite show on
there already?"
"Excuse me?"
"You've put MY favorite show on there... haven't you?"
"Er... um... well, I -- that is, I -- Hmmmm. What IS your favorite
show?"
"Let's Pretend. They always have the neatest stories."
"Oh, that's the program with all the old fairy tales and legends, isn't
it? Uhhhh... no, not in quite a while."
"You haven't? But that's MY favorite!"
"Yes, but --"
"I think the kids would really, really like it."
"Well, you're probably right, but --"
"And the story I want you to put on there for them is 'Prince Gigi and
The Magic Ring'. That's the best."
"Oh. So you've already picked that one out, have you?"
"Yes. I've thought about it for a long time. That one is the best.
You'll put it on won't you?"
"Well..." I looked her in the eye and smiled. "Yes. I think I will."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
And a hug sealed the deal.
So here you go. This week's show comes with two thumbs up from Jessica.
"It's the best."
Best Wishes,
The Erskine Family

The Story of the Declaration of Independence plus, The Great Gildersleeve in An Old Fashioned 4th of July
Dear Friends,
Well, this is how summer goes around here...
Now that we've gotten "sorta kinda" caught up with everything here at
home and work, it is off this week to Boy Scout Camp with Troop 601.
Last year was my first time as a leader at a scout camp, and I must say
I did enjoy it, despite the sweat and mosquitoes, the copperhead in the
latrine, and the food (things like fish sticks, patties covered in brown
gravy, and little halfpint milk cartons -- which gave me flashbacks to
my grade school cafeteria). Between the food and all the walking we
did, I lost four pounds during camp last year, so I consider this my
personal "health spa" week.
Anyway, I'm there for the full week, so there won't be anyone minding the store (or the computer) until after the 4th.
So, now listen: Don't bother to email us... don't buy anything
from us (unless you don't mind an extra week or so wait)... don't do
anything with homeschoolradioshows but enjoy this week's stories.
The Story of the Declarationof Independence
Freedom. Our dearest heritage was won only after a long and determined
struggle. And the document which sets forth our reasons for founding an
independent nation did not spring into being spontaneously, as some
people think. The true events of how this all started are the subject
of this great episode of Cavalcade of America, originally broadcast on
January 1, 1936. (The opening of this program is a five minute
orchestral rendition of Victor Herbert's classic overture, "American
Fantasy" -- we like it a lot, but if your young ones get bored with
classical patriotic music, fast forward to the story.)
The Great Gildersleeve in "An Old Fahioned 4th of July"
As some of you long-time listeners know, this
is my personal favorite "old time radio" episode of all -- as the Great
Gildersleeve's household sets out to celebrate an old fashioned 4th of
July. If this program doesn't put a smile on your face, and make you
wistful for "the way things were"once upon a time in this country, then
my friend, you're at the wrong website. (The download links for these stories are a ways down below. Keepreading...)
That's it for this time! "Tune in" and enjoy!
Best Wishes,
The Erskine Family

Dear Friends,Time to update you on our project to bless our young pastor, Brother Frankie, and his new bride Amy. As
many of you know, Frankie is the pastor of our little country church in
nearby Munfordville. He is a doctoral student at Southern Seminary in
Louisville, and drives down from there twice a week (120 mile round
trip, and he pays for the gas) to conduct services and do visitation.
A couple of months ago, Frankie married his sweetheart Amy, down
inSouth Carolina where they are both from. Right now, they are down in
SC, living in a family member's rental trailer. Amy is in the final
weeks of her nursing assistant program down there, and will finish up
her clinical work at the end of July. They will then move back up
somewhere between here and Louisville and hope to find an inexpensive
two room apartment so Frankie can get going on the new semester of his
schooling, August 1st.
So, in the meantime... Frankie and Amy are now travelling 900
milesround trip weekly to conduct services here in Munfordville. And
Frankie still pays for the gas.
Oh... and did I mention that they are doing this... and planning tomake
their move and set up their new apartment home... on the $700 a month
salary our little church is paying him? OUCH!
Well, that's the situation. (And yes, I'm going to bring up the salary
issue at our next business meeting, lol.)We want to BLESS this faithful
young couple and help them a bit to get moved and settled in on a
shoestring that will at least not snap if you look at it hard.
We put up a wonderful resource page for anyone who would like to giveFrankie & Amy a gift to help them out, at www.chirotoons.com/cookbooks
There are 37 great cookbooks there that are yours (with giveaway
rights if you want to pass some along to a friend) in return for a gift
of whatever you feel led to give.

So far, we've raised just over $2,100 for this dear young couple. We are so thankful to all who have taken part in this, and appreciate it so much!
There is still time for you to chip in your gift, and to get a great
gift for yourself in return. Note that donations are going directly to
Frankie's paypal account... we don't handle it at all. You'll get a
receipt and a link to the cookbooks just as soon as you make the
donation, however much you wish to give.
Here's the link again: CLICK HERE
Check it out!
...and Thanks so much!

Hi folks, This past weekend we
had a wonderful time down in Florence, Alabamaat the "Time of
Refreshment & Renewal" conference put on by the Rushton and Beck
families. It was one of the best seasons of fellowship andencouragement
we have had in years. Great teaching, delightful conversation. In fact, I plan to share a few stories and juicy tidbits from our conversationswith you here shortly. But... While
we were in Florence, the transmission in our faithful van hadfirst a
nervous twitch, then a heartbreaking spasm, then a total
meltdown...leaving us landlocked at the hotel... so we ended up staying a couple dayslonger than originally planned. Thanks
to some timely intervention from the Rushtons (I owe youbig time,
Harold!) we eventually found a reliable mechanic, left the vanin his
care, and rented a car for the trip home. We got back Monday
evening... just in time to feed the chickens, tossour luggage on the
bed, and head over to Vacation Bible School(aka The Vortex
that swallows you whole one week a year). That, and the million
things that have piled up on my "to do" list are my way of saying
that our living book for the ears newsletter is gonnatake a holiday this week. Hope you understand. In the meantime, two quick reminders... Our
introductory S A L E on our brand new "My Favorite
Story"collection is over THIS WEDNESDAY! Come Wednesday evening, your
shot atgetting this wonderful resource at a huge discount will be history, and thiscollection will only be available at regular p rice. So, a word to the wise... take a look now while the gettin' is good:CLICK HERE Also,
we still want to bless our young pastor and his new wife witha gift
that will enable them to set up their new household (well, two
roomapartment anyway) near the seminary up in Louisville -- at
least on a shoestring that is not so frayed that it will snap when
you blow onit. I mean, how can you move 500 miles and do everything you
need to doto set up a new home on $700 a month? (Boy, am I
gonna ragthose deacons at our next busi ness meeting : ) YOU get a truly amazing gift in return for your gift to them. 37 ofthem, in fact. Take a look. We'll give you the grand total on how this turns out next week. Thanksso much for your generosity and support... AND patience as we get things back up to speed here! Good Morning friends,
We want to share a special request with you today,
where you can be a real BLESSING to a new couple, and you in turn will be blessed with a wonderful "thank you" gift you will use for YEARS...
If you're in a hurry, jump on over to this link:
http://www.chirotoons.com/cookbooks
But if you've got a minute, Here's the story....
The pastor of our little country church over in Munfordville is Bro. Frankie. He is a doctoral student at Southern Seminary up in Louisville. He faithfully drives his ancient vehicle back and forth twice a week (120 mile round trip) to conduct our services, and is paid a whopping $700 a month (he pays for his own gas) to be our pastor. As a student, this is currently his only income. (As you may guess, he is the most frugal person I've ever met!)
Just a couple weeks ago, Frankie travelled back to his native South Carolina to marry his lovely bride Amy. She's a full time nursing student there, and should be out of school come the first of August. For the time being, they are living in a family member's trailer. Come August, they will be moving back up to KY... just in time for Frankie to jump into his doctoral studies for the Fall.
Anyway, believe it or not, Frankie and Amy are travelling back and forth from South Carolina to Kentucky most every week just to hold services here at our church! Talk about faithful!
Yet...
He's still paid just $700 a month... their only income at the moment... and he is STILL paying for his own gas (now a 950 mile round trip)!
So...
WE WANT TO BLESS THIS NEW COUPLE for their FAITHFULNESS to their calling, and HELP them to put together SOME sort of "nest egg" to set up their new home when they move back to Louisville (a small two room apartment at the seminary).
You can help them... and get yourself a wonderful "thank you" gift for doing it...
a 37 volume Family Cookbook set you will refer to for years.
Take a look at the page we have put up that lets you send this dear couple a small gift, and shows you all the goodies you will get in return:
http://www.chirotoons.com/cookbooks
Thanks so much for checking this out and giving this request a moment of your consideration! If it is in your means to send something along for them, what a blessing that would be. We really would appreciate it and I am sure they will too! (No, they don't know about this -- yet! : )
We'll see you tomorrow with another "living book for the ears" program!
Best Wishes The Erskine Family

Here's a great idea especially for AUDITORY learners in your home:
You could USE this ONE SINGLE CD in your homeschool this coming year as a painless (ie. stress-free, enjoyable) year-long course called: "Survey of Great Literature 101" -- and you would introduce more stories from classic literature to your young people than most college grads will EVER know about.
No kidding.
We've got it on sale for one more week, if you're interested.

Hi folks, Hope y'all had a
great, long Memorial Day weekend. Whether you are wrapping up your
homeschool studies the next couple of weeks, or are right in the middle
of things, don't miss this week's "Living Book for the Ears" program...
 Gulliver's Travels
This well done and humorous adaptation of the classic book by Jonathan
Swift adapts the first and most famous portion of the book, where
shipwrecked Gulliver is washed ashore on the island of Lilliput, with
its 1/4" high residents. This fun program features several voice
characterizations by animated cartoon voice actors from the 1940s. (See
if you recognize some of them!) This episode of "Favorite Story" was
originally broadcast via syndication in 1947, and is just one of over
50 great "Favorite Story" programs that is available on our brand new
CD collection! plus, this week... Baby Snooks Learns About BEING GOOD!
Just for fun, here's another episode with that delightful brat, Baby
Snooks (as portrayed by the incomparable Fanny Brice). This time,
Snooks finds that there is a "good me" inside her, and a "bad me"
inside her, and they have a time fighting it out to see which one is in
charge. (Whoa... Snooks is getting into some interesting theology here!
lol!) This is the FIFTH and final episode we have featured over
the past several weeks from the 78rpm "Baby Snooks learns" album from
1949. Hope y'all give these a listen -- they're a hoot! Click here to go to this week's newsletter & programs!

Hi friends,
We spent this morning clearing rocks
from the upper field, cutting down excess trees and hauling them to the
burn pile, then mowing. I'm beat.
Hmmmm.... nobody's looking. I think
I'll just tiptoe inside the office here (in front of the fan -- ahhh! )
and add a note to our blog while everyone else is still outside working
so diligently. They won't even notice that I'm not -- oh, HI THERE FAMILY!
uh... uh... why SURE! Why, IT'S BREAK TIME for EVERYBODY! DIDN'T YOU KNOW
THAT?
Oh, well... we've done enough yard
work for today anyway...
Hope all is well with your family
as you're wrapping up this year's studies. Those three favorite words
for homeschoolers -- June, July and August -- are just around the corner!
And though you may be planning to take a break, we plan to be here all
summer long with some great audio stories and resources to help you keep
your kids' listening skills in tune, and keep them learning even when they
THINK they are only having fun. (Ha! WE know better, don't we?)

"THE SENTINELS OF THE DEEP"
--------------------------------------------
This week, the fascinating story of LIGHTHOUSES... and how they made the coasts of America the safest in the world.
Learn about the incredible hardship and danger ships once faced when
sailing along our dark, unlit coasts... and hear the story of the first
lighthouse built to guide the sailing ships of the Eighteenth century
into Boston Harbor. This great episode of "Cavalcade of America" was
first broadcast WAY back on October 14, 1936... and is still exciting
and fun to hear today!
