Washing Dishes By Hand

Posted on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 9:49 PM by Alison - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Sometimes progress isn't always the best thing. For several years we've used the dishwasher to wash our dishes. Well, most of them. Of course there were always the dishes left over that couldn't go in the dishwasher for one reason or another, so my sister (or Mom) was stuck washing them. Why not me? you ask. Ha. It was my sister's job, that's why! Up until recently, it was my job to empty the dishwasher. This happened daily, sometimes twice a day.

Well, a few months ago, Mom decided we were going to quit using the dishwasher. Just an experiment to see if it made any difference on our electric bill. We kids (I was, at least) were skeptical, but went along with it cheerfully enough. Surprisingly - I found I love washing dishes! We quickly worked out a schedule. Emily is to wash the breakfast dishes, Elisabeth and I do the lunch dishes, and Amy and Mom do the supper dishes. It works out pretty well!

And what do you know? It does make a difference on the electric bill! I guess that means we have an inefficient dishwasher. I'm not kidding about enjoying dishwashing, either. There are so many advantages! First off, We don't have to have all those non-dishwasher-compatible dishes piling up on the counter in between meals. The counter seems to be "freer" of dishes, which I like. The warm water feels good on my cold fingers (just so long as it's not too hot!). And it's nice to do the dishes with a sister. Our home does not have to be filled with the sounds of a super loud dishwasher. No one has to empty the dishwasher!

One more thing - we don't run out of knives anymore! That might not seem like a big deal. But we used to be running out of knives constantly, it seems. Now that the dishes get washes more often than once a day (in theory at least, right?), the cupboards are more full of dishes.

So you see, technology isn't always that much better. In this case, I think washing by hand is better. That doesn't mean I'm going to start washing clothes by hand, though. Don't get any funny ideas.

Whiter Than Snow

Posted on December 19, 2009 at 1:52 PM by SuperAngel - Link

that is what I woke up... if you know me, you know I DO NOT LIKE SNOW! So I complained (*gasp*) about it on my Facebook and promptly got a smack about complaining about it. First Mom said I need to learn to be positive about it then MamaArcher told me to go look up these Scriptures:
Psalms 51:7
"Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow."

Isaiah 1:18
"Come now," says ADONAI, "let's talk this over together. Even if your sins are like scarlet, they will be white as snow; even if they are red as crimson, they will be like wool."
Ok... so I need to stop complaining about the snow since it serves as a reminder that I am clean in His sight and my sins are no more. HalleluYah! What a blessed sign from our Savior!

Sometimes we just need a little smack upside our heads to come back to where we need to be.

Hoover Dam

Yesterday we got to go to the Hoover Dam!!! It was soooo fun. The panorama above is facing the water opposite of the dam. I didn't even think of getting a panorama on that side...  To post all the pics I took I turned them all into collages... It's easier that way. :-) The first one is all the pictures (well not all... I got rid of some) that I took when we dropped my dad off at a bike trail. Sorry these backgrounds are white. I was having such a hard time not freezing up the computer any time I tried something that I finally gave up. :-p
Then after that we went to the library. It was so nice. Every few inches there was another old book. I love old books and our librarian has admitted to us that our library keeps up with the newer books. :-p So I got a ton of them. This collage is random pics from the library. Somewhere in the mess of pics is a picture of a book quilt that was hanging in there. It was so neat looking!

After the library, we went to a small museum. The lighting wasn't the best for pictures so I didn't get very many good ones... I liked it because it was a hands on museum and you were allowed to touch everything. :-)
Then we stopped back at the bike trail, ate lunch and picked up my dad and we all headed to the dam. It's hard to see how big it is until you see the worker's cars down at the bottom. They were tiny! The bottom right hand picture here is a bunch of men in a cage hanging over the bridge being built. That bride is almost more interesting than the dam! To me at least. :-)

The trip ended with this last picture on the way home. Notice the for sale sign behind the bush on the right. Want to come live out here? It comes furnished! (see the chair?) We'd love to have you.

Do You See What I See?

I was putting some laundry in the washer in our *NEW* laundry room (YAY!) and lifted my head and saw this:

Isn’t it tremendous? How can you look at that and not believe there is a loving and awesome God?! I sure can’t! Clouds and sunsets and sunrises have to be my favorite part of His creation. They are gorgeous! When I see that, I see a loving God.
What do you see?

Clouds and Projects

Posted on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 7:14 PM by Amy - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link

The other morning (I think it was Sunday) I went outside and got a few pictures of the huge clouds and the rainbow that showed up. It was a full rainbow but I couldn't get the whole thing in a single picture... The pictures weren't the best but who cares... This first is the sunrise. Where we live, it is very hard to get a nice sunrise picture this time of year. There are too many power lines, houses, and other things... :-

Then there is a picture in the other direction.

And that rainbow. There is another annoying power line in the picture...

Enough of the weather. Next is the "creature from the Black Lagoon" (it was supposed to be a dog... *sigh*), and the basket I made today. I got both ideas from Salley Mavor's book.
This is the "dog". Time for a picnic! It's perfect for some fruit!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! (And a happy new year!)

Awe man!.  just wrote a post two times and it erased both times. :( Sigh...I'll just write it over again. Ok...what I was saying was. In indoor this year they don't have a U13 competitive girls league so we are playing in a U14 rec boys league. So the people we play are HUGE. I am short (4' 9") and I'm not even the shortest person on the team! Lol! I'm tied with two other girls for second shortest. :) We lost 4 - 0 but we played good. :) My next game is Saturday! Dad has a soccer game tonight. Dad is working from home today because he has been sick but he does feel better today. I'm sooo excited about Christmas. It is in 9 days!! Yay! It is soo close! These days have been flying by! I can barely keep track of them! I thought yesterday was Monday but it was Tuesday! Today is Wednesday, right?  Tomorrow at art class we are having a Christmas party! Well..sort of...we bring food and i don't know if we are going to draw. I think we are going to draw a little but but mostly talk. Lol! I like art class. We don't paint or anything, we just draw. So it is basicly drawing class. Lol! Lots of people that do art class are from our church. Also Thursday night my uncle is coming over to spend the night! I think another uncle is spending the night too but I'm not sure. THey are going to stay untill Friday afternoon. Saturday (as I have already said) I have a game but I am not sure if Graham and GreenPeppermint have games. I think they do. Sunday we will go to church and- Oh! Christmas break starts Saturday! Well...I think we might get off Friday since our uncles will be here but I'm not sure.
I am trying to learn french. This is what I have learned so far. Bonjour! Mon nom est Felicite'. (Good Morning (or hello) my name is Felicit.) Comment alez-vous? (how do you do?) Bien, Merci. (well, thank you)  Au revior! (good bye!) I have also learned Bonne nuit. (Good night) Lol, it's fun. :)
After CHristmas we are going to go on a vacation! I think we are going to go to Tennessee to find snow. Lol, it barely ever snows here but last year we got enough here to sled a tiny bit in (it was kinda' wet though) and build a little snowman. One year we went to Tennessee to find snow and it ended up not snow in Tennessee and snowing where we lived! Lol! Funny, funny, funny. I'm excited though. Well, i got to go. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Your Friend, Felicity :)

Question: Do you know any language besides english, if so, which language?
Answer: I used to know Chinese but it was really hard because each meant
four different things depending on the accent you said it. But I want to learn French. :)

P.S. Probably the next time I post will be sometime in January because I will be verrry busy! So please understand. Lol!

Why waste time with titles?

Posted on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 1:56 PM by Amy - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I took this picture last week when Elisabeth was standing on her desk. (probably not a good habit...) She was pretending to be a model. I think she just needs to improve the look. She looks to happy. :-p Oh, and she isn't standing on her toes...
My new way of eating noodles is with butter, garlic powder, parmesan cheese and a handful or two of mozzarella cheese. It's soooo good! Another good way is to just put on butter and salt. I didn't think that way would taste very good so I didn't try it for a while but once I did, I enjoyed it. I suppose that noodles aren't a very healthy/filling meal but they're good anyway.

There isn't much news around here except that I've made quite a few more dolls in the past few days (except for heads and hats... I ran out) and that we finished our last Jonathan Park episode. Yesterday we listened to four or five and did the last one today... It's a good thing we can re-listen to them! :-) Oh, and we got to watch the Felicity DVD by American Girl. We borrowed it from a friend and couldn't wait till Mom let us watch it! I loved the behind the scenes!

Later this week we're going to get to somewhere that I've wanted to go for a loooong time! But you'll have to wait till later to find out where it is. :-)

In Love

Posted on December 14, 2009 at 1:09 AM by SuperAngel - Link

I am soo adoring not only this song, but the meaning behind it. Brayden and Talitha wanted their marriage to be an example to all of how the Savior feels about His people: Us.
This is just beautiful and precious!

Such a wonderful reminder that we need to be constantly ready for our bridegroom to come get us!
Matthew 25:6 It was the middle of the night when the cry rang out, `The bridegroom is here! Go out to meet him!'
I'm so looking forward to the day when my bridegroom comes! I'm in love with this song! :D
