Home Sweet Homeschool

Mar. 5, 2008 - Do you have a home school graduate success story?

An elist friend shared the other day that she wished she could read more success stories of home schooled graduates.  I know they are out there.

Our oldest daughter (21) graduated from our home school about 3 years ago.

I must admit it was tough home schooling through high school - You can have so many doubts about what they study and if it will work.....

Well, it does work.  Of course, you need to know where they are heading for, but I firmly believe that if you teach them a good work ethic and a love of learning, they will be able to get to wherever they want to go.

Our oldest daughter worked for a while after she graduated.  Then she went on a Discipleship Training School with Youth with a Mission (spent time in Norway and Gaza - awesome experience).  Came home to work again and helped out a bit with caring for her elderly grandfather (who died about six months after her return to Canada).  Then she worked again, went up north on a Duke of Edinburgh's Fitness Challenge, traveled across Canada with us for five weeks, and came back to a job working for a Home School Board in Alberta.

That is where she presenty is - still saving money for another trip.  Living on her own, paying her own way.  I've been told a couple of times how much they appreciate her initiative and hard work.  I know they are very happy with her.

Last night, at a church event, she was sharing a testimony about last weekend.  After she finished speaking, the MC ( a former HS dad) asked if you could tell she had been home schooled....  and alluded to what she had done while home schooling.  What an encouraging word for me.

Did I know where she would end up?  Not at all - but I have no doubt that God will continue to lead and bless her wherever she goes.  He will also lead, guide and prepare your children as well.

Do you have a success story to share?  Please post a comment here or a link to your blog if you do.  I would love to read it.

Mar. 6, 2008 - California Homeschoolers need the prayers of the nation...

I am commmenting to as many bloggers as possible about the situation that has recently risen over homeschooling here in California. A serious threat has been made to the legality of homeschooling and who can and can't. It is a scary thing, yet God is so much bigger than some judges in a courtroom. Please first begin to pray that homeschooling will remain as it has been here in California, and that this will be dealt with quickly without families coming under undo attack or litigation. Visit HSLDA's website for information and to sign the petition as well. Thank you and God Bless, Jennifer

Mar. 13, 2008 - Homeschool Graduates

I stumbled across your blog site on Google, and I couldn't help but post a comment. I began homeschooling in 1983 before it was legal. We home schooled all five of our children for twenty years. We had three girls and two boys. They are now all grown except our youngest, who is 15. He just entered a private high school this year. Success stories? You bet. Our kids have thanked us for homeschooling. They have so many memories. Our oldest daughter became handicapped from a rare disease and she spent many years in a wheelchair. She was able to graduate on schedule because we just did school in the hospital, or wherever she was. She won a full academic scholarship to a private college for all four years. She graduated with honors and went on to graduate school. She is now a Montessori teacher. College was her first "real school." Our second daughter is now a registered nurse and working in a children's hospital. Our third daughter is still completing her college, but she is happily married to a wonderful young man who just returned from the Iraq War, and they have a beautiful daughter. Our oldest son had special needs (autism, brain-inury) and now lives in a group home, but he was also home schooled and because of this he is not retarded (per the professionals.) He is attending college, in fact. Our youngest son is planning to become an engineer.
Homeschool - is it worth it? A resounding YES! Don't ever give up. The foundation you have instilled in your children makes for a strong character and a successful future. It is truly a gift to your children and grandchildren.
