Blogging and Schooling and Life! Oh MY!

Frustrated!

I really love living in Quebec but there are times I get really frustrated at the government here. I have been going back and forth on home schooling since we had our first baby. There are SO many benefits and it sounds so great but there are a lot of reasons I'd like to have my kids in school too. I struggle with not knowing if I'm really the right "personality" to home school and if it's a good fit for my kids and I. Mark and I had come to what we thought was a good plan. We would put Danya in kindergarten at the public school here, she would get French immersion which we liked and we knew the teacher was fantastic which we also really liked. Well as it turns out that might not be such a great plan! Apparently in Quebec if you want to home school the best way to go about it is just to never enroll your kids in school. Because if you decide to pull them out later you have to jump through hoops and back again in order for it to be all "legal". So now we are back where we started. Feeling pressured into making a decision we aren't sure we're ready to make. I have time, she won't start school till next September but there is still a lot to think about...

April!! How awesome to see you here! I didn't know you were considering homeschooling- that's great! You won't regret it.
Since you are their mom, you *are* the perfect person to teach your children. You know them better than anyone and can tailor their education to their needs.
You know, it's kind of the same here. It's a little trickier pulling a child out of school rather than never putting them in in the first place. It just gets them in "the system" but is doable.
Now Danya's a little older than Millie- do you mean she'd start K this September or next? Millie won't be 5 till Dec. 13th so we decided to just do PreK with her this year and K next. We figure we need all the parenting years we can get with her. ;)
Anyway, I'm glad to see you posting here! I have some CD's I'd love to send you to listen to about homeschooling if you want.
Love, Alyssa

p.s. I LOVE your avatar pic of you & Jack! :)

Hi there!

I'm a blog friend of Alyssa's and I wanted to welcome you to your new blog! I read your post and I understand your concerns. It's good you have some time to consider your decision but I have a thought ... what about starting with homeschooling? Is it difficult to enroll a child in the school system at a later time (months or years?) You might find that you absolutely love homeschooling and the decision will be made for you. I'll pray for you and your husband (if you don't mind) for help in making your decision. Our children are so precious to us and we, as parents, want what's best for them. I have a blog friend in Vancouver, BC, that homeschools. You can find her on my friends list as kateyz. Take care!

April!
I had no idea you wanted to h/s either. I also have some tapes you could listen to if you want. I sent them to Alyssa and Jennifer at one point and they both enjoyed them, so if you'd like to listen, I'll be happy to loan them to you.
There's also a book I have that might help you in your progression of thinking in this thing. It really helped me get out of the mindset that homeschooling looked just one way. It's called, Homeschooling, A Patchwork of Days, and it's short journal entries of 20 or 30 h/s moms and the way a typical day at their house goes. It's so interesting! Might help you figure out if you could see yourself doing it, too.
So now I've added your blog to my list of fun places to go and read in the am. :)

Hi April,
I'd love to encourage you in your desire towards homeschooling because I think you'd love it. What is it that makes you think you might not be cut out for homeschooling, by having the "right" personality?
There are all kinds of us homeschoolers out there, with all kinds of personalities. Were like "snowflakes", and to go with all of our uniqueness, there's a homeschool "style" to go with each of us. There is no exact right way of going about it, as in, one size fits all. Some of us are kind of rigid and very academic about it all, and others, are more given to flexibility and tailor a style of schooling that fits our children.
A good website to look at is
www.homeschooloasis.com
while your in the considering mode.
I wish you many blessings!
