"For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ."
1 Corinthians 3:11
October 31st marks the 498th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing the 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg church. This event ignited what has come to be known as The Reformation. On Reformation Day, we proclaim the only true Head of the Church is the Lord Jesus Christ and we celebrate the recovery of the doctrine of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, all to the glory of God alone.
The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died.
She is from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation,
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.
The Church shall never perish!
Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain, and cherish,
Is with her to the end:
Though there be those who hate her,
And false sons in her pale,
Against both foe or traitor
She ever shall prevail.
Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song!
’Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.
Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won,
With all her sons and daughters
Who, by the Master’s hand
Led through the deathly waters,
Repose in Eden land.
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee:
There, past the border mountains,
Where in sweet vales the Bride
With Thee by living fountains
Forever shall abide!
~ Samuel Stone, 1866

What a great post!
I knew about this but never thought of actually making "it" the celebration. We don't do halloween and just always take the kids swimming or something. The pool is always empty. This year our church has rented an ice rink for skating. Next year we could have a Reformation party!
Happy Reformation Day Heather!

Happy Reformation Day!
Hope your day has been great, remembering and celebrating Luther's monumental document. Praise God for the courageous Reformers!
I'm just checking in because I've been gone for a while, but our computer is fixed and I'm so glad to be back in the land of bloggers! :)

Oh, yeah, and...
A few years ago, our church had a Reformation party where you could dress up as a Reformer (our pastor came as John Knox and his wife as Mary, Queen of Scots) or as a Bible character. We had carnival-type games with Reformation titles for the kids to win candy. We had a trivia game to see how much people knew about the Reformation. It was so much fun (family fun, too!) and the kids never missed trick-or-treating! Just thought I'd share since it was mentioned above!

Wonderful Hymn
We just sang this hymn on the last Lord's Day and I was particularly struck by the words in thinking about today's anniversary. Thank you for including it.
I hope to add links to my site soon for our church and related ministries. We print a huge array of Reformed literature. Maybe you can check it out once I get it put on.
Have a great day!
