Stepping Heavenward

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
Psalm 40:2

Poetry Memorization
Jul. 17, 2007

Poetry Memorization time is one of our favorite times in the school day! Two great articles on the value of poetry memorization are One Myth Two Truths: How to Turn Good Readers Into Good Writers Too and Poetry Memorization: Methods and Resources.

We allot about 15-20 minutes daily for poetry time. First, John will recite all of the poems he has learned year to date. Then, we begin our new poem. We start with me reading the poem to John so that he can hear the cadence and correct pronunciation of words. Then, I have him read aloud from my sheet, so that he can see the words on paper and the outline of the entire poem. Next, we work on the first verse/stanza. We sit across from each other and I say 1-2 lines and he repeats them -- he is not reading it anymore at this point.  I say the next 1-2 lines, and he repeats them. Then he tries to say the whole verse. (This is usually where we stop for the first day of longer poems.) After he has the first verse down cold, we work on the second verse and so on. Usually it takes about a week to memorize a poem. Amazingly, it seems that as we go on, the more poems we memorize, the easier it is and the quicker he is able to memorize poems!

When I have time I am going to look at your list more closely. We love poetry memorization here! We have circle time in the morning where we do all our memory work. It's a fun time. We even include math facts, catechism, memory verse etc. She loves having this session of memory work.
We are about to start "Dancing" in FLL. She can't wait.

Yes! We love our poetry and our little ones know so many just from hearing them read by an enthusiastic Momma! Mary Brooke in Atlanta
