Stepping Heavenward

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

Homegrown Revolution - Radical Change Taking Root
Feb. 26, 2008

Wow. They grow over 6,000 pounds of organic produce a year on their 66’ x 132’ city lot. That's incredible!

"Like Victory Gardens of yesteryear, start your own homegrown revolution,
grow your own food in your back or front yard --
for more information visit the urban homesteaders"

I don't know if I am ready to take it as far as they have, but it is neat to think about what is possible with the land that we have right now!

I loved this!

We don't own so re-arranging the entire yard is not an option BUT I defintely can do a small garden. I was going to forget it simply becasue it would be so small. I am now inspired. I long to live in a rural area with chickens, goats and a huge garden. I love the idea of living only locally. We have started doing that with our meat. We will only buy from hormone and drug free local farms for our beef and chicken. It is a bit more expensive but worth it. We also have many berry farms where we live. We pick like crazy from spray free farms and I am still having smoothies in Feb. Thanks for the post and inspiration. The fact that they do it in a city on such a small lot blows my mind. I am eager to do the research to find what I can grow year round where I live. I kinda write off winter and grow nothing right now.

Cheers:o)

Ah ha!

Another "Revolution" I can get behind! *grin*

We have .78 acres. I so wanted two acres, so we could have goats and chickens, but my husband said no. I hate to say it, but he is actually sort of regretting that now but we do not want to move again. (Just built 2 years ago and love our house and neighbors.) So we are going to have to make do with what we have. This summer it all begins. Last year we built some raised beds but never got anything planted due to all the rain. This year...it's plant or bust! ;-)

I would still love to have some chickens. Do you think, if I plant hedges all the way around the yard, the neighbors would even notice? I'm only half kidding...

This is awesome!

Thank you for sharing this. Dh and I have been discussing our Victory Garden for this year. We can actually plant here in a couple weeks, and I am *so* not prepared. Since we are renting, our gardening space is somewhat predetermined (although we are on two acres), but we decided a few years ago that once we owned our own home, we were going to do mostly edible landscaping.

I can't wait until dh gets home, so I can show him this. We'd both love to live in a small town or slightly more urban environment (although where we are right now we love too). This video proves that we could have the best of both the rural and urban environments. How cool would that be?

Blessings!

WoW!

I saw this post yesterday afternoon and spent the whole evening trying to find out if Chickens were allowed in the city limits. I rent now, but would absolutely love to do this when we are ready to buy.

Closest answer I got was from a local community farmer who thought that if the neighbors didn't complain you'd be ok with chicken raising as they are a nuisance animal. Housing is slowly dropping into our price range, and these are things to consider. Thanks for the fantastically inspiring post!

This is what I aspire to be, but with air conditioning, LOL! Maybe if I had to ride a stationary bike every day to have enough power to run the AC I would be MUCH healthier, hee hee!

I also planned a raised garden last year, but it never happened. This year it is a must. I would love to have chickens, but we are already the oddballs here in our suburban utopia since we homeschool, so I best not push it or they might just gather a mob!
