Quote Contemplation... Are You Afire?
Posted in Quote Contemplations
"You cannot kindle a fire in any other heart
until it is burning in your own."
~ Anonymous
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those that know me personally, know me well for saying,
"If you love it, your children will love it (at least to some degree)."
It seems that every time we had a homeschool meeting
or everytime homeschooling was/is discussed,
I would find myself saying that or at least something similar.
Do I believe it? You betcha!
Have you ever been around someone
that was so excited about something?
It can be quite contagious... even if it's just a little.
Or how about the flip side?
Have you even been around someone
that wasn't excited about that something?
That can be quite contagious, too.
Initially, when I would claim "If you love it, your children will"
I was thinking along the lines of academics and such.
If they see a curiousity, a love and excitement for learning in us
then they will be motivated and compelled
to become more curious and excited and will develop a love for learning.
This also applies to our ministry to others...
When we are excited, passionate, and convicted about things
like homeschooling, our children, our husbands, etc...
what a wonderful opportunity we have to be
a help and encouragement to many others.
The same applies to our spiritual lives...
When we are on fire for the Lord and for spiritual things,
when we are living a life that is full of love for Him,
when we are serving Him with joy and gladness,
and not in mere obedience or in drudgery,
our children will, too, be curious, motivated, and compelled to follow.
This is a 'lead by example' issue.
When we desire our children to be motivated,
to be on fire for something,
we ought to be that way first... leading and showing them.
We need to be "An Example Worth Following".
This applies to academics, character, self-discipline,
spiritual things, and much more!
May we light our hearts afire
so that we may ignite the fire in our young ones.
Quote of the Week...5/01/06
Posted in Quote Contemplations
In Christ we have a love that can never be fathomed,
a life that can never die,
a peace that can never be understood,
a rest that can never be disturbed,
a joy that can never be diminished,
a hope that can never be disappointed,
a glory that can never be clouded,
a light that can never be darkened,
and a spiritual resource that can never be exhausted.
Quote of the Week...4/10/06
"Education is what remains
when we have forgotten all
that we have been taught."
~ Marquis of Halifax
How true this is... it reminded me of my public school experience.
I spent almost all of my youth in public school,
being 'taught' many things for many years.
And I am constantly reminded of how little I still recall.
Very little remains of what I was taught.
I spent all of those years reading, memorizing, researching, and working
for the mere goal of completing assignments
to procede to the next grade.
Yet I hardly took any knowledge with me that didn't soon fade.
Now many years out of school
and spending seven years of home educating my children,
I've come to the conclusion that most of my years
in public school were spent in educational vain.
I learned so much more through home educating my children
in one year than I did in all my years of public school...
So I suppose according to the quote
that my education was at a minimum from public school...
most of what I did retain, I taught myself.
I have spoken with many other people
that hardly remember much at all from public school.... hmmmm....
would I be too bold to say that public school education is an oxymoron?
The two hardly coinside... at least, that is in my case.
I praise the Lord that I have
so many teachable moments as we home educate.
Home educate... not home school....
I am educating my children for life...
not simply to pass on to the next 'grade'.
But to fuel in them a love for learning and self-education.
I praise Him that we have the freedom to step up
to our God-given responsibility, to train and bring up our children.
My prayer is that I will do all He has enabled me to do.
I just wanted to share the definition of education
from Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary
of the English Language:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ Education -
"The bringing up, as of a child; instruction; formation of manners.
Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline
which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper,
and form the manners and habits of youth,
and fit them for usefulness in their future stations.
To give children a good education in manners, arts and science,
is important;
to give them a religious education is indispensable;
and an immense responsibility rests
on parents and guardians who neglect these duties."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, I think that's a pretty sober and charging definition.
Quote of the Week... and a song...
Posted in Quote Contemplations
"A teacher affects eternity;
no one can tell where his influence stops."
~ Henry Adams
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What a sober reminder!
And how much more true is this for parents...
especially when the parent is the full-time teacher!
We are shaping and molding future adults,
parents, grandparents, etc...
We are greatly influencing their morals,
their character, their habits, their flaws,
their faith, and more...
which in turn, they will one day influence others...
and those others will influence even more others....
the timeline of influence is endless!
That is an extremely humbling thought...
My greatest prayer is that they will see Jesus in me
and that my influence will be an influence
that benefits them and others for eternity.
Below is a song that I sang
at my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary.
I pray that my children (and others) will, one day,
be able to say this about me...
"I Saw Jesus in You"
When I enter Heaven's glory, And I see my Savior's face,
I will offer Him ten thousand years of praise.
Then I'll find that special one,
In whose life I saw God's Son,
And thru tears of joy with trembling lips
these words I'll say:
I saw Jesus in you, I saw Jesus in you.
I could hear His voice in the words you said -
I saw Jesus in you.
In your eyes I saw His care,
I could see His love was there.
You were faithful, And I saw Jesus in you.
When I stand before my Father,
To receive my life's reward,
And my soul is bathed in God's eternal day,
When this race on earth is run,
And God sees the works I've done,
More that anything I long to hear my Father say:
I saw Jesus in you, I saw Jesus in you.
I could hear His voice in the words you said -
I saw Jesus in you.
In your eyes I saw His care,
I could see His love was there.
You were faithful, And I saw Jesus in you.

"I am comforted by life's stability, by earth's unchangeableness.
What has seemed new and frightening
assumes its place in the unfolding of knowledge.
It is good to know our universe.
What is new is only new to us."
~ Pearl Buck
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is comforting to know there is a certain stability in life and in the earth. Stabilities like the sun rising each morning, birds flying and singing, trees standing, flowers blooming, animals existing, learning new concepts, getting different and deeper perspectives, etc..
And as she said, when we 'discover' something new, frightening, or unknown to us previously, it does not remain new, frightening, or unknown. The newness takes it's place in our 'file cabinet' of knowledge, just as all the previous discoveries had done.
I like the last phrase "What is new is only new to us." The Bible says, in John 1:3 ~
"All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
All of our 'new' discoveries, concepts, perspectives, etc... have always existed. He created them all. Yet He leads us through each day allowing us to see 'this' or 'that', and it is new in our eyes.
It kind of makes me think of how we sometimes will buy a gift for our child and keep it in our closet. It's there, they just haven't discovered it yet. But at the right time, we allow them to see it, we give it to them, and they are able to see this 'new' thing. It isn't as new to us as it is to them. Yet, it thrills us that they are so eager and excited to receive it.
I can imagine that it thrills the Lord when we are so eager and excited about the things He shows us. And I am confident that it thrills Him even more when we appreciate them and offer our praise to Him for those things.
"I have never let my schooling
interfere with my education."
~ Mark Twain
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to smile (and chuckle a little) when I read this quote. And I appreciate Mark Twain's humor/wit in it.
I also appreciate how I can adapt it as my own because I didn't allow my schooling to completely interfere with my education either.
There are many things that I remember about being in school... few of them good. But I do remember reading, exploring, learning, and pursuing my own interests when I wasn't in class. At 13, my birthday wish was a huge dictionary... and I got it! (Thank you, Gramma *Ü*) I remember reading through it... just for fun. Yes, it was fun for me. I would put x's by words I would read and try to use them. And other things like that. I enjoyed learning... not because the school encouraged me to, but because my parents did. I remember my mother sparking in me an interest in things... always wondering 'why' and then figuring it out. She would encourage me to find out and help me when necessary....
Mom, I think you were a homeschooler at heart.
I find it interesting that he would make a quote like that and find it quite encouraging. Encouraged that "schooling" will not, in fact, interfere with my children's education. Thankful that I have the privilege to home educate them rather than send them to an institutionalized school, where their education would be limited. Instead they have the freedom to learn and get a true education at home and develop a love for lifelong learning. What a thing to achieve.

"We must view young people
not as empty bottles to be filled,
but as candles to be lit."
~ Robert H. Shaffer
(professor of education at Indiana University)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I appreciate the way this quote is worded.
Our goal isn't necessarily to fill
our children's brains with knowledge and such...
but instead, our goal is to ignite the fire within them,
to create and encourage a passion for learning.
When we have taught them to love to learn,
we have accomplished a wonderful thing
as a mother and as their teacher.
We have also set them up for a lifetime of learning
and our efforts have not been done in vain.
Quote of the week beginnings...
Posted in Quote Contemplations
I enjoy quotes! I enjoy reading them, thinking on them, analyzing them, and discussing them. I am going to attempt to begin doing this here on my blog. This is mostly for my own benefit... being able to 'talk' outloud to myself in discussion over these quotes. Although, I would love to hear other's thoughts of these quotes as well. Please feel free to add your comments to the quotes that find themselves here at my blog. *Ü*
