Curfew... from William the Conquerer

Noted in... Education Estate

A modern day word has quite some history behind it!

I've been reading "Famous Men of the Middle Ages"

and read about this the other day...

After many battles were won

and a few years of being King of England,

England was so peaceful that William the Conquerer

left to visit Normandy.

He left England in the charge of his brother while he was gone.

But while he was gone,

many English nobels rebelled against him.

So when he returned, he made very severe laws

and did some harsh things.

He laid an extensive area waste, destroying all houses on it,

causing thousands of people to die from lack of food and shelter.

All because the people there had not sworn allegiance to him.

He made a law that all lights should be put out

and all fires covered with ashes at 8:00 every evening,

so the people would have to go to bed then.

A bell was rung in all cities and towns throughout England

to warn people of the hour.

The bell was called the 'curfew',

from the French words couvre feu,

meaning "to cover fire."

Starting off Fun!

Noted in... Education Estate

I started school last week, and 'fell in love' with my courses!

My Chemistry is a blast and I've learned so many things

and have done 3 weeks worth in one week!

In fact, I've already done a few experiments...

... I was getting familiar with the metric system and converting units.

In that particular experiment,

I was finding the amount of density and mass in different liquids.

This was today, and I was calibrating my metric thermometer.

I was going to wait until the water boiled (at 100.0 C),

but I got tired after an hour and a half and quit at 45 degrees Celsius.

While doing so, I read about measuring heat, Kelvin,

tThe calorie unit, and specific heats of common substances!

I had a blast!

I also found it funny on my mom's recent post,

she posted about energy, and I related the terms to chemistry.

'The kids were so full of potential energy, that when mom

lit a fire in them to run around the house, their energy changed form to Kenetic.'

(1st Law if Thermodynamics, of course!)

Also, my Greek is going SOOOO great!

Using Rosetta Stone, they're definately giving me more practice in reading Greek!

They don't say or write a word in English.

The sentence in the picture above was

To mple autokinhto einai kainourlio.

Which means, the blue car is new.

(pronounced 'two bleh  aufsto-keen-ee-toe   ee-nah   kennel-yo)

I must say, though, my most difficult sentence was

H hlikiwmenh gunaika ecei aspro mallia.

(E eel-ih-que-many   ye-necka   ee-ah   ahs-pra  ma-ya)

Mostly because when you say it, it needs to be sorta slurred.

Anyway, now I like going around the house and

putting sentences together in Greek.

It's so fun!

I also have a 'Curriculum Text' where the entire book is in Greek.

So fun to read!

I'm having such a blast in the school year so far!

Starting 9th Grade!!!!!

Noted in... Education Estate

Yay!

Yesterday, I started my 9th grade.

My favorite subject would be Greek and Chemistry tied!

I've learned quite a bit of Greek, and Chemistry is absolutely fascinating!!

I love learning the metric system, periodic table of elements,

all the fun memorizing new scientific sounding words... paradise!

But when I opend my Chemistry book, I found it funny to find this...

Hee hee. The bottom cracks me up!

'Even though you hate chemistry, I love you more than you'll ever know.'

I'm lovin' it!

I Finished 8th Grade!!!!

Noted in... Education Estate

The last subject I had left in 8th grade was

the intimidating BIG book of Algebra 2...

Yes, that big thick book is all done!

Even though I did enjoy the funny questions!

(You can read some if you scroll down to 'Amusement in Algebra'.)

Well, after a whole year of all this, I'm so proud I'm done with it!

My personal favorite part of it was this...

Graphing! Yeah!

Not so bad, so I just might enjoy Geometry this next schoolyear

(if I do Geometry).

But, I gotta admit, this was my least favorite...

NOT fun, and very time consuming.

Makes you feel like your brain's gonna fry, too.

But in spite of all the Advanced distributing (as seen above),

this was the very first Mathematics curriculum I've ever really enjoyed!

I can't wait to start my 9th grade work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amusement in Algebra!

Noted in... Education Estate

The Sabouri brothers of Teaching Textbooks crack me up!

They wrote my Algebra 2... but they made all the hard stuff so funny!

I can hardly go through a lesson without a giggle or two!

Examples:

Perfectionist anchorman #1 straightens his tie once every 5 seconds.

Perfectionist anchorman #2 striahtens his tie once every 16 seconds.

Together, how many seconds will it take them to straighten their ties 42 times?

... hee hee! Oh, here's my mom's personal favorite...

The ratio of those that threw a hissy fit to those who pitched a conniption was 11 to 14.

If 253 people threw a hissie fit, how many people pitched a cinniption?

Even though there are some tough equations before the word problem,

it's funny the way they word it! I like...

Somehow the bookstore was able to sell 2 copies of its worst seller,

Algebra for the Holidays!, at the full price.

They then had to sell the remaining 3 copies at one fourth the price just to get rid of them.

If the bookstore's total sales for this book

(discounted and full-priced versions combined) were $55,

what did the book sell for at full price?

I could  go on and on 'till I named every problem in the book,

but I'll stop there!

I can't help but mention though,

that they tend to use hilarious names and situations,

like 'Sir William Wampum' and 'Mrs.Mary Moolah'

have interesting stocks and bonds situations.

Even though I'll miss my Algebra 2 in that way,

I'm sure their Geometry will crack me up too!!!

But if I had to recommend Algebra 2 to anyone,

I'd definately say "A Teaching Textbook".

Oh! I only have 7 more lessons and I'm done !!!!

Although, I'm hoping to start Chemistry next week...

so I suppose I can welcome Algebra back !

Oh well, the Algebra's worth the Chemistry!

"Let no man despise thy youth;
but be thou an example

in word, in conversation,
in charity, in spirit,

~ I Timothy 4:12

I am a Christ-loving maiden of 14 years, surrendered to the will of my King to be a missionary's wife. I'm currently at a "9th grade" education level. I have been homeschooled for 8 years. My dad (and knight in shining armour) is a Marine in the United States Marine Corps. My mother is a seasoned maiden who spends her time in the castle teaching and training her maidens and knight-to-be. I am the oldest of four children. I have a knight-to-be, brother (8) and two wee maidens (4 and 3). This is where I will share my thoughts, my accomplishments, events in my homeschooling days, what the Lord is teaching me, and more.
