T-Shirt Dress How-To's...

On my new blog, I posted about the t-shirt dress I made this weekend and was asked to share how I had made them. I posted the T-Shrit Dress How-To's today and just wanted to share the link here.
I haven't, yet, decided if I am going to keep this blog or not. But until I decide, I will try to, at least, post a link to my other blog when we do any keepers at home projects.

Mama Keeper's New Dress...

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted here with a new project.
Today was rainy and mostly uneventful
so I thought it a good day to finish the dress I began 2 weeks ago.
This was the first time I’ve made this particular dress
and I soon learned that I made it way too big.
So I had to adjust it as much as possible without ripping it all out, recutting, and starting over.
The fabric is a paisley print with natural colors,
different shades of brown, cream, mauve, etc…
I chose this pattern because I liked the sleeves,
though if I make it again, I may make them a bit longer.
I also raised the waist line and lengthened it.
Here is the final project…
The pattern used was Simplicity 9493

What's Cookin' ~ Menu for 12/1 to 12/15

It's been almost a month since I've posted here, due to our move.
We are settling in nicely, though, into our new home.
(Read about it here)
Since we're getting settled in, it was time to sit down
to begin making menus again. 
Here's what we're doing for the next two weeks:

It Must Be Good...

This week it has just been the children and I at home
so when I made out our menu,
I tried to use a lot of what we already had on hand.
Last week, my husband bought quite a bit of chicken breast
so a few evenings ago I decided to use some of it for one of our meals.
I'm not sure if any of y'all remember a previous post, from a while ago,
stating how I really like to use the dry italian dressing mixes.

Well, I heated up my iron skillet and added three frozen chicken breasts.
I cooked them for a couple of minutes until they started thawing.
Then I added a little bit of water and continued to cook them this way
for about 10 minutes (adding a little more water, often, as it would absorb).
Then I added a packet of the italian mix
and continued cooking it (adding water as needed)
for about 20 more minutes or so ...

As the chicken thawed/cooked, I cut it in strips while in the pan.
We had it with our Homemade Ranch Mashed Potatoes.
The children and I enjoyed it so much
that we've had it three times this week!
That many times... it must be good!

Menu from Our Empty House...

On our HomeSchool Haven Blog,
a friend of mine left a comment asking me to share our menu
while we were spending our meal times in our empty house.
Since we are unsure as to how long we'll be here
I only made a menu for a week instead of two.
"Frugal" Menu for a Week in Our Empty House:
Mon. 10/23 ~ Black Beans & Brown Rice (optional tortilla)
(salsa mixed in for mexican flavor)
Tues. 10/24 ~ Sloppy Joes/fries
(note: sloppy joes are made with ketchup/mustard/etc...)
Wed. 10/25 ~ Ground turkey, brown rice, and green bean casserole
(only using half a pound of ground turkey)
Thurs. 10/26 ~ Tacos
(made with half pound ground turkey and refried beans)
Fri. 10/27 ~ Homemade Pizza
(unfortuneately, not sourdough but still homemade)
Sat. 10/28 ~ Chicken and Brown Rice casserole
(one small pkg of chicken breast, cubed, with rice & seasonings)
Sun. 10/29 ~ Spaghetti/garlic bread
(either meatless or half a pound of ground turkey)
To cook, I set aside my iron skillet, a 2 quart glass pot,
a 9x13 baking dish, and a round cookie sheet/pizza pan.
It was a blessing to get all that we needed for around $60.00

Tackling the Turkey...

When we took our bi-weekly trip to the commisary the other day
I picked up another turkey so I could use the meat for many meals.
This time, Keeper2Be had the job of gutting the big bird...



After it was cooked and cooled,
she picked off all of the meat so we could separate it and store it...

She enjoys picking the meat off of the turkey
and examining its bones and structure.
And that's okay with me!
She can pick my turkeys apart anytime she likes.
She did a great job and it was great practice for her as a future cook!

Delightful Dough...

Here is the recipe the children and I used to make the dough
that they delighted in playing with so much (Delighting in Dough Post).
Delightful Dough
1 1/4 C flour
1 1/4 tsp oil
1 pkg. kool-aid type mix
1/2 C salt
1 C boiling water
Mix dry ingredients. Add water and oil. Knead.
Store in zip storage bag or plastic container with lid.

Leftover Turkey Idea... Chopped Turkey Wraps...

I feel as though I have been neglecting this blog
due to our busyness of packing and such.
But, at last, I finally had something to blog about here. 
Yesterday I made a 15 pound turkey for supper.
Why so much? Because I love to save the leftovers!
One of our favorite things to do with all of those leftovers
is to make them into chopped turkey wraps/sandwiches.
I got this idea from my sweet mother.
She used to chop up the turkey, mix in some mayo and pepper,
and serve it on bread as a sandwich.
It was one of the reasons I looked forward to Thanksgiving every year.
I have, since then, adjusted the way my mother made them,
although, the lil' ones still like them that way.
Honestly, so do I, but I try to go without the mayo
(not that I give much mayo to my children either but they don't like it the other way).
Anyhow
...
Here is what Keeper2Be and I did for lunch today...
I took pieces of the turkey (that Keeper2Be picked off the big bird last night)
and put them in my food processer...

Then, of course, chopped it all up...

Then I put some red, green, and yellow peppers in the food processor...

And, yep, chopped them up...

I, then, added some roasted pepper italian dressing into the chopped turkey,
added the chopped peppers, and put it on a wheat tortilla to eat...

It was quite yummy!!

It's Finished! Regency Gown Complete!...

After working on Keeper2Be's regency gown for, what seems like, so long,
I was finally able to complete it today.

She is excited to be able to wear it 'officially' to church tomorrow!

Regency Gown Progress...

This weekend I was able to work a little further on Keeper2Be's regency gown.
I spent the time working on her sleeves.
I gathered the edge of the sleeve ...

and pinned it to the sleeve band...

Then, of course, sewed it together...

After finishing both sleeves, I then sewed them to the bodice...

Keeper2Be loved the sleeves...

I also began sewing the skirt together
and have reached a 'snag' trying to figure out the placket.... ugh!
I hope to work on it some more this week
in between holiday time with hubby, school, and packing.
We are both eager to get it finished
and look forward to seeing it completed so she can wear it.

Seam Ripper... Friend or Foe? (Regency Gown Update)...

Don't you hate it when you seem to be on a roll
and then discover that you WERE on a roll...
only it was downhill in the wrong direction?
Well, I did that.
There I was happily going along, thinking I was doing so well (being a little puffed up),
only to discover, when I went to turn the right sides out of the Regency bodice,
that I had somehow 'seen' a direction that wasn't there
and I sewed something together that wasn't supposed to be sewn together!
And I had been making sure that it was sewn together good, too,
by backstitching here and there, especially on the other seams...
A Scripture came to mind...
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." ~ Proverbs 16:18
Hello seam ripper...
One of those tools that you love to hate and hate to love.
We spent quite some time together, the seam ripper and I,
and were able to become well aquainted after such a long time of being apart.
And, at last, we accomplished the goal at hand.
It was then time to read the directions slowly and more fully
and to continue sewing the bodice together in the correct places. 
Sew, I continued on...
It doesn't seam like much, but here is what I was able to get finished...

Here is a view of the bodice, open from the back.
We're now another step closer to the finished product!
And I was able to practice patience and smiling
as the seam ripper and I did some 'catching up'.

Regency Gown Beginnings...

It seems that lately all I've blogged about here was food.
Not that food is a bad thing, but it's nice to be able to have another kind of project.
Well, Keeper2Be and I were finally able to begin working on her regency gown Saturday. 
We've encountered a few 'difficulties' with the pattern
and we've had to adjust the bodice neckline and arm holes.
It's been a little challenging but we hope to have figured it out.
Keeper2Be has done quite a bit of tracing and cutting.
Another good reason to trace your pattern... just in case you have to make adjustments later.
Here is Keeper2Be cutting out her adjusted bodice...

As I waited for the new pieces, I continued sewing my own jumper...

Multitasking is great!
After Keeper2Be was finished cutting, I worked at putting the bodice back together...

Pinning something that is gathered and on a curve is always "interesting".
While I pinned and sewed the bodice back,
Keeper2Be ironed my new jumper skirt...

We were able to get most of my jumper finished
and were able to get most of Keeper2Be's bodice back finished.
It's always challenging figuring out a new pattern.
Here is her bodice back so far...

I think she picked a beautiful blue for her fabric.
We hope to work on this dress throughout the week and in between homeschooling.
