Change in the weather... and then some
Today the weather changed. Yesterday was warm and sunny. This morning it was sunny and... cool. This evening the clouds are coming in, the wind has picked up, and rain is forecasted for tonight. Right now the window is open and when I stop typing I can hear the wind in the trees in our woods. If the monitor weren't in the way, I could see the beautiful maple tree that we planted two years ago. C planted it so I could see it from the kitchen window while working at the sink. Soon it will be covered in gorgeous red leaves.
Fall is my favorite time of the year, I think. I prefer cool weather, love the colors of the leaves and the feeling of a warm sweater on a cold day. I love reading - to myself or my kids - snuggled up in a blanket. I feel more awake and alive.
This fall is a little different. It's almost certain we won't be living in this house next year, so we're entering our last fall here. We don't know where we'll be. The kids know, but probably don't really understand, that we are most likely moving. We talk about it occasionally, and there is a mixture of excitement ("we can check out new museums!") and sadness ("I don't want to leave my friends.") Of course they also don't know that my feelings are a bit mixed too. So I'm trying to prepare by saving a few things from home. This is the first year we've really saved many seeds from our flowers. Cosmos, love-in-a-mist, zinnias and sunflowers will most likely be available whereever we go. But I want to be able to plant our seeds, from our flower garden, especially the zinnias, which E chose, planted, and cared for. When those maple leaves turn red, we will press a bunch in our big dictionary. I'll probably take a cutting of the hydrangea that was a gift to my niece when my mother died. BB was in the Navy then and couldn't carry the plant back with her, so we planted it here. She probably doesn't even remember it. I can't save blackberries; whatever is in the freezer will have to be eaten before we go. Hm, maybe I should have gotten that dehydrator after all...
The places we are now considering are California (southern), Mississippi, and Pennsyvlania. All have their advantages and disadvantages. If we're talkin' fall weather, though, Pennsylvania's gotta be the place.
If only it were that easy!
