Two Kid Schoolhouse

• Oct. 19, 2006 - How many hearts did the Mets break tonight?

Before last week my kids may have heard of the Mets, maybe.  C and I love baseball, and used to pay attention to it, back in those pre-kid days.  We actually went pretty regularly to both major and minor league games.  But then we had kids and moved to a nonbaseball town and our attention was pretty limited to the playoffs and the World Series.

So we've been enjoying the NLCS immensely, letting the kids stay up (here on the west coast it's not so very late anyway) to see the games.  I naturally went for the Mets since I was a) born in NY, and b) have a nephew who has been a Mets fan since he was, oh, about 8 or 9 and he and I used to go see them when they played the Giants.  He's 29 now, lives in Manhatten and rarely gets to a game, he says.  But he still likes the Mets.

Tonight's game was so good, and so exciting.  But what a heartbreaker!   C had to go to a meeting so had to miss it.  When it was over I was sending him a text msg (yeah, I have a cellphone that'll do that now, and I even know how to do it) and E said "uh, Mom, J's crying."  He wasn't crying, he was sobbing.  Now remember he is not a Mets fan, or a fan of any team.  And he was tired, and a little sick, and... griefstricken... sobbing.

"I hope the Tigers cream the Cardinals, don't you Mom?"  Um, hmm, well... how does one explain that an NL fan is an NL fan, and can't go for the AL team no matter what?   (It's that dumb DH thing.)

"Yeah, sure, honey, I'll root for the Tigers with you."  Big hug, big smile, big kiss.  OK, I'll sell out the NL for that.  Just for this year.
