• Feb. 4, 2006 - Apostrophe Abuse And Other Societal Ills

Posted in Home Education

Let me just say that I make as many mistakes as anyone when doing some quick, casual writing.  As in email, or a blog entry or comment.

But I think if I was writing for publication (which I'm not) in a more formal format - newspaper, magazine, book  - I'd be very careful to check and doublecheck my work.

So it really distresses me when I see error-filled articles, books, and other publications written by homeschoolers.

Of course the most egregious is the ever-popular apostrophe abuse.  I know, I know... it's very easy to type "let's order 3 pizza's" and go on the way. I've done it myself and later cringed at my error.  But again, we're not talking about casual communcation here.

Homeschoolers, are so quick to point out that they're kid's are getting a superior education over public school kid's.   And they may be in many ways. (How many errors did I make in the first sentence of this paragraph?)

But the people we're trying to convince of this superiority aren't going to see it that way when our writing is full of grammar and punctuation errors.

And please don't tell me that having good character is more important than knowing how to put a comma in the right place!  Of course it is. But how we communicate that good character is important too, if we want to have any credibility with our audience.

Now I can think of at least two people who will hesitate to email me for fear I will be critiquing their writing!

I SO agree. It really gripes me to read examples of apostrophe abuse, glaring errors in spelling, etc. But my most recent grammatical pet peeve is the habit too many folks have these days of refering to themselves as "myself". As in, "Susie, Billy and Myself will be going to the World Grammar Bee." Oy! Does no one remember the simple trick of lopping off the "Susie, Billy and" of the sentence and reading the remainder to see if it makes sense?

It was a nice birthday, thanks! Not enough decorations for my daughter, though. But then nothing is ever decorated enough for her. If 3 hearts hanging in the doorframe are good, 10 or 12 must be better!

EVERYONE is afraid to e-mail me or otherwise write anything to me -- I am a grammar nazi; our mother made us this way. (Thanks, Mom!) Love, Suz.

Oh dear! I know I am no grammarian! I can only imagine how you must shudder at my blog!

The problem with grammar and spelling mistakes is you don't know what you don't know. :(
