Apostrophe Abuse And Other Societal Ills
Let
me just say that I make as many mistakes as anyone when doing some
quick, casual writing. As in email, or a blog entry or comment. But
I think if I was writing for publication (which I'm not) in a more
formal format - newspaper, magazine, book - I'd be very careful
to check and doublecheck my work. So it really distresses me when I see error-filled articles, books, and other publications written by homeschoolers. Of
course the most egregious is the ever-popular apostrophe abuse. I
know, I know... it's very easy to type "let's order 3 pizza's" and go
on the way. I've done it myself and later cringed at my error.
But again, we're not talking about casual communcation here. Homeschoolers,
are so quick to point out that they're kid's are getting a superior
education over public school kid's. And they may be in many
ways. (How many errors did I make in the first sentence of this
paragraph?) But
the people we're trying to convince of this superiority aren't going to
see it that way when our writing is full of grammar and punctuation
errors. And please don't tell me that having good character
is more important than knowing how to put a comma in the right
place! Of course it is. But how we communicate that good
character is important too, if we want to have any credibility with our
audience. Now I can think of at least two people who will hesitate to email me for fear I will be critiquing their writing!
