Laura Ingalls Wilder home and museum

Hi!  On Wednesday the 12th, we went out of town for the day.  The main reason was to take Bailee, our female Pembroke Welsh corgi, to a breeder and that was 3 1/2 hours away!  Crazy, I know.  So, to make our trip worthwhile, we stopped at Mansfield, MO to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder home and museum.  It was probably the best field trip we had taken in a long time!  We left our house at 7:30 a.m. and didn't get home till 6:00 p.m.  It was a long day, but we had so much fun!  We learned so much about Laura and Almanzo Wilder and their families that we hadn't known before.  The guide took us on a tour in their home and farm, where they lived most of their lives.  It was quite interesting.  They wouldn't let me take pictures inside the homes or the museum where the artifacts and stuff were displayed.  :(  But I did take some outdoor pictures.  Hope you enjoy them as much as we did!  :)

This entry goes to the kitchen, the first part of the house when they moved there.  Almanzo fixed up the kitchen just the way Laura wanted it.  Almanzo built the cabinets low enough where she can reach them.  Did you know that Laura was only 4'11" tall and Almanzo was just 5'2" or 5'3"?  It felt so cozy inside!  Look at the leaves, isn't it gorgeous?

The guide said that Almanzo added on little by little over the years.  The last he added on was the part of the house with the porch (on the right side).  It was all handcrafted and so beautiful, again very cozy!

What a wonderful trip! I love anything about Laura Ingalls Wilder and I did not know that her husband was so short! I can't wait to tell my husband who is the same height. Great things come in small packages.

I just loved reading this post. My tradition with my boys is when they get to a certain stage in their reading we read the whole Little House series to build their reading flewency. It has sooooooo much pioneer adventure the boys just LOVE it. Now, I will have to show this post to my boys. This has been such a blessing you shared this. For us to ever get a chance to see these houses in real life is VERY slim. Thank you once again !

Blessings in Him<><

Wonderful post. Her books are still in one of our girl's bedroom closet even though she has her own family and set of "Prairie" books. (-:

I remember going there when I was really young as a school trip. I would love to take son up there sometime but like you, it is about 2 to 3 hours drive from us.
Have a great weekend.

I found your blog through PlainJane. I recently started the Bedell Curriculum and she mentioned you use it also. I love these pictures! We are studying the Little House books this year and are in co-op that is strictly for Little House. We are planning a field trip at the end of the year to visit this location. The pictures are great, I am sad to hear that you are not allowed to take pictures inside the home and museum :(
I love the look of your blog and will be back to visit soon!

What a wonderful s&t. I loved reading all the information on the signs that you took pictures of. I read every word - I find it all so very interesting!!!

I just started reading one of her books with Ruthie (10) and this is the first time for me to read any of these. I am enjoying it greatly!

I just love, love, and love the white house that the Wilders lived in. I would love to see the inside, but the outside is adorable! I would say that is my dream house.

Is the stone house the house that was the modern one built for the elder Wilders by Rose, their daughter? I like the white one way better.

Wow, what a neat fieldtrip. We still haven't gotten around to seeing any of the little house houses, and we live in MN, practically surrounded by them. lol

btw, I posted the winner of the waffle contest. Although you didn't win, I appreciate your recipe - it was very good.

What a great field trip!
And the dog got to come too!
I didn't know they were so short, how smart to build things on her level.

Hi there!
I'm just responding to your question about Haflingers and their walk...
I believe that every haflinger is somewhat unique. We have seven of them, and some are awesome. So I guess I can't be much help here. I would ask the person that you trade from for a trail ride first. I'd take her/him for about at least 30 minutes to try out. I never buy a horse unless I've actually rode them and feel pretty comfortable.

Good luck!
