Brain Surgery

I just spent a week in the hospital following brain surgery and I'm soooo happy to be home again!!!

I was dx with hydrocephalus ( a build up of fuild in the brain) in June after I began seeing double and suffering from major headaches. My life basically stopped June 1st 2006. I spent most of my time either in bed, or wanting to be in bed. My family life suffered, my company suffered and our homeschool suffered as I tried to just make it through each day.

After months of prayers, tests and meds it was finally decided that there was no know cause for the build up on fluid in my brain and it would have to be treated with surgery, before future damage was done.

I went in to have a shunt placed. This allows the fuild to flow into my abdomen where it can be assorbed by the intestines. These are commonly placed in babies and even older adults. But, it isn't done very often in those my age, 36, because it's very uncommon for us to even have hydroceplus in the first place.

My routine hospital stay turned into a week of "taking turtle steps" as my doctor called it. I had complications after the surgery which cause my recovery to go much slower than expected.

I'm home now, with a shaved head and so very THANKFUL!!!!

If you begin seeing double or have a headache that just won't go away... have it checked out!!!!  An MRI can spot any major problem that may be causing it.

We are of royal blood (at least a few drops anyhow)

Posted in Our Homeschooling Adventure

The girls and I have been researching our family tree and found some VERY interesting facts! My mother's mother's mother's side of the family has been traced back to a number of royal families. Now that's cool!

Our family came over from Kent England in 1620. The girls are now focused on finding out what Kent is actually like. What's it look like? What's the weather like? etc. It really is fun to read about King William and think about him as your great-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g.... grandfather! lol

The scary part is that my husbands family came from Kent England as well...... hope we're not distant cousins.

A Family Tree

Posted in Our Homeschooling Adventure

Earlier this summer my mother came to spend a month with us. I was sick in bed so she enjoyed being the mom again. She brought a letter with her that was written by a cousin in 1970. Complete with a copy of a letter detailing our family history, it was proved to be over 100 years old!

Needless to say the letter got everyone interest in our family history. Which fits perfectly into our study of Medieval Times this year. Why? Because my mother's family has been traced back to William the Conquer! How cool is that!?

Now I'm on a mission to trace the other branches of our family tree and it's soooo interesting..... and a great school project!

Trying to find the time!

Posted in Our Homeschooling Adventure

This is my second... no actually third attempt at keeping a blog. Where does everyone find the time to keep them so up to date??

My youngest girls, 11yo twins, Brittany and Brooke have begun fencing lessons this year and LOVE it!!  I wish I had heard of it before. It's a great way for two hyper kids to work off some energy!

We are studying Medevil History this year and having a blast!  The kids have to do a semester prodject about the time period for MAFA.  My 16 year old son has decided he wants to make a medevil cake! How weird is that!! SOOO if you have a really old cake receipe sitting around please let me know.

BTW -  MAFA is an awesome fine arts academy!  TOSH has an interview with Vivian in their latest edition.
