Aug. 9, 2007 - K.B.'s Daily St. Louis Cardinals Report
The Cardinals had a tough game set before them yesterday when they had to face Greg Maddux on the mound for the Padres. And they did have a tough time hitting throughout the whole game -but so did the Padres. Cardinals starter Kip Wells had one of the best game this year on the mound. The Padres scored early with a run in the top of the 1st. But the Cardinals came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. And that was all they needed to win the game. Neither team scored again to give the Cardinals a 2-1 hard fought win.
Cardinals starter Kip Wells as you know did great. He went 7 innings on 6 hits and a run. Randy Flores came in to pitch but allowed a hit and did not record an out. Ryan Franklin came in to help out that inning and finished it hitless. Jason Isringhausen came in to close the game and did it successfully. Wells earns his 5th win of the year and Izzy gets his 22 save.
The hitting was just barely enough for the Cardinals. They only had a total of 6 hits. Leadoff man David Eckstein had probably the best night offensively. he went 2 for 4 with a run scored Juan Encarnacion doubled in a run and scored himself. And Albert Pujols, who only had 1 hit the entire game, had an RBI.
Today the Cardinals will finish up the series against the Padres. Joel Piniero (1-2 5.31 ERA) will start for the Cardinals and Chris Young (9-3 1.82 ERA) for the Padres.
