Jun. 2, 2008 - China Town Tour
On Friday, we went on a tour of China Town in Los Angeles with our homeschool friends. My Grandpa came along too! It was so fun and I'm still rambling on about it.
We got there at 10am and started our walking tour. The guide took us around town and showed us the clubs for different Chinese families or provinces. In China, every area has its own language. Mandarin is the common language, but if you didn't go to school then you wouldn't have learned it. Each area or family has a club set up so that when people arrive from China, they will have someone to teach them Mandarin and English and help them to get settled.
We got to go inside a store. I loved that because I would have thought the people would be angry that we were in their store. They were happy to see us! There were so many interesting things there. Grandpa and I want to go back and shop! He wan't to see the herbalist they have inside the store that will help you find what kind of herbs and stuff to keep you well.
We saw the Marketplace, old guys playing games, different shops, a statue of Joan of Arc. They have a Chinese school where the kids go on the weekends so that they don't forget how to speak Chinese and learn about their heritage. We went inside the temple of the Queen of the Sky. That was one of my favorite parts. I never seen a more beautiful temple.
After the tour, we came back to the Golden Dragon for lunch and show. The boys really got excited about the rice and noodles and their favorite, Sweet and Sour chicken. We had Coconut Jello for dessert which was GREAT! I want to make that at home.
The show was so funny! They dressed some of the kids from the schools in costumes and presented them as the Emperor and his family. A woman did some fan and ribbon dancing. Another woman did a whole bunch of awesome balancing acts. And man did some really funny magic tricks and balancing tricks. The kids loved it. Grandpa and I were impressed!
It was a great day and I'm so glad I got to share it with my Grandpa too!
