Encourage one another, and build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Ouch! Do you see any truth in this email forward?

Subject: Math
Last week I purchased a burger and fries at McDonalds for $3.58.

The counter girl took my $4.00 and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave
it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies. While
looking at the screen on her register, I sensed her discomfort and tried to
tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the
1960s...

Teaching Math In 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1990

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80
and his profit is $20 Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 2000

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20.
What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class
participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels
feel as the logger cut down their homes?
(There are no wrong answers.)

Un ranchero vende una carga de madera para $100. El costo de la produccion
era $80. Cuantos tortillas se puede comprar?

Sep. 9, 2007 - Sigh

Having worked retail, it's actually very disconcerting when someone switches things up like that. I always had trouble calculating unexpected changes with a customer staring at me. I went on to study Calculus 4 in College, so it has nothing to do with math ability.

As for the rest of the goofy email, heaven forbid our children should learn a foreign language! A high percentage of the rest of the world is multilingual, but Americans are too self-absorbed to bother. I'm tired of people blaming "the system," but doing nothing positive to make a change.

I would have to say that I love the post. I have seen the youtube video showing the new math textbooks; they don't even teach the multiplication algorithm. One teaches a stupid lattice method of finding the answer, and another just tells kids to work it out for themselves. Once upon a time kids were taught their tables; for addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division. In this time frame they would have no problems working out simple change.

If someone 'changes it up', it's still a simple subtraction problem. You still have the amount that the customer gave you, minus the amount that the item actually cost. No problem. No reason for a problem.

There is no problem likewise with kids learning a second language. Everyone in high school here in Australia learns a second language. But doing your maths in another language (or cutting time from maths to fit in the other language) obviously means that people will do worse at maths and better at the language. And which is more important?

How many kids in high school know what language will be useful to them as an adult? And how many have the freedom to learn that language? Those who need another language will usually have to learn it from scratch in adulthood anyway. But everyone needs maths; even retail clerks.

I went to a fast food drive thru with my kids. I placed my order, went to the window and gave her my money. She shut the window and reached for her cell phone. I thought, this is a strange moment to be making a call. Then, I realized that she was using the calculator on the phone to figure out my change. I'm sorry, but doesn't the register do that for you? And no offense to the previous post, but I think most of us worked retail at one point or another. Counting change is a pretty basic mathematical skill. I believe the point in the comic is that over the years, schools have changed and are not teaching the skills that are needed, not that the teller was unintelligent. Its the schools at fault, not the teller.

I want get into this debate : ) but I had never seen the last addition to this comic--the Spanish. I think the point is about all of the Spanish speaking people who are in this country illegally, and who also expect us to accomodate their language instead of learning ours. I won't go into that testy subject! At the very least--because my daughter's birthmother now lives here, probably illegally, and does not speak English.
I have a feeling what you posted as an innocent "funny" comic on the state of our school system has opened up subjects you didn't expect! : ) I hate it when that happens to me!!

Oh, my goodness. I am so sorry that my comment caused you to think I was upset. Not at all. Being upset never crossed my mind. Ugh. I thought I was validating you, because it seemed a least one of the other commentors seemed upset. Please accept my apology if I came across in a wrong way.

Sep. 30, 2007 - Regarding learning a second lang. comment

Posted by genevieve1642
Why do we all need to learn a second language, when most of the Americans here in our country can't even speak correct English, much less write it! ??? (Just a post to comment about another person's comment.)
