Kids in the Kitchen Making Holiday Treats!

Hey kids! The Holidays are here with treats and dishes to prepare
I’m afraid my hands are full with our new little baby who needs my care

Hey kids! Wash your hands and grab your apron
It’s time to mix the ingredients and start some baking

Hey kids! The treats look great but what happened in here
Flour and crumbs flung everywhere

Hey mom!  With a hip and a hop
A giggle and a song
All those busy hands
had my kitchen
sparkling again!

Thanks Kids!

  Peanut butter and jelly sandwich

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich, also known as a peanut butter and jam sandwich in the UK and Canada, is a sandwich that includes a layer of
peanut butter and either jelly or jam on bread, commonly between two slices. Jars of pre-mixed peanut butter and jelly are commercially available for making these sandwiches.[1] It appears to have been invented by GIs during World War II.[2] The sandwich has the advantage that it does not contain any perishable ingredients, so it does not require refrigeration in hot weather, making it suitable for lunch bags. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is very popular with both adults and children in the US and Canada. A 2002 survey showed the average American will have eaten 1,500 of the sandwiches before graduating from high school.[3]

A Little Spice to Everyday Learning

Learning all those prepositions can be redundant and boring so why not add a little fun.  Don't just repeat those boring  words, say them while signing.   I like to use both the Perigee Visual Dictionary of Signing and the ASL Browser.

After six weeks of using the Classical Conversations Foundation Guide,  as my core Curriculum, the memory work is getting hard.  I have been amazed at my children's ability to memorize and my decreasing ability.  I had to call on Dr. Memory  for a little help.

A Lamp Lighter Favorite........

Posted in Book Reviews
My kids begged me to finish this one!

Helen and Betty could not be more different in their perspectives of the destitute people that live around them. When Helen, the old sister, hears the story of the Good Samaritan she is rewarded for her classroom achievements, while the other sister chooses to live the example of the Good Samaritan. As Helen lives for herself and is constantly worried about the opinions of others, Betty searches for ways to be a blessing to others. When faced with the realities of living the life of the Good Samaritan, Helen reveals the treachery of her own heart as she mercilessly withholds good from a dirty street urchin. Ouch! Do you see any truth in this email forward?

Subject: Math
Last week I purchased a burger and fries at McDonalds for $3.58.

The counter girl took my $4.00 and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave
it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies. While
looking at the screen on her register, I sensed her discomfort and tried to
tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the
1960s...

Teaching Math In 1960
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1990

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80
and his profit is $20 Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 2000

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20.
What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class
participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels
feel as the logger cut down their homes?
(There are no wrong answers.)

Signing Time! Volume 5: ABC Signs DVD

My children love Signing Time. We began using ABC Signs two years ago for our spelling practice. On Monday, we dictate and write our new spelling list, Tuesday through Thursday, my children practice spelling in sign language, Friday they take a written or sign test.  Although we no longer need to use our DVD for practicing our ABC Signs, we will hold on to this treasure.

My youngest son, who could not write at the time, became a great speller. When he did begin writing, his spelling had given him sucha a boost, he began writing in complete sentences.

Chuckle for the day:

One time at the eye doctor, a deaf couple was sitting across form us signing. My son leaned over quietly and asked, “How did they know I sign?”

After years of using The Writing Road to Reading, The Spalding Method.  I'm ready for a change.  I wanted to try something different, easier yet still using many of the same concepts.

All new for me!  I would love to hear your input on any of these books.

A revised and expanded edition of First Grammar Lessons by Charlotte Mason, authored by Karen Andreola. Truly a gentle, friendly, but thorough approach to grammar without all of the tedious workbooking - in the true spirit of Charlotte Mason. Karen has retained the soul of the book while updating it for us, replacing obscure words and giving us larger, crisper type, but using turn-of-the century illustrations and vine-bordered pages. The book embraces an interactive approach to grammar, accomplished, for the most part, orally. It is a natural, uncomplicated method - you simply sit down with your child and this book and teach. Lessons are to be completed at the rate of one per week, in short, 10-15 minute sessions. One rule is taught per lesson. The 46 lessons here, along with the additional exercises in the appendices, should supply a year of pleasurable instruction.

A creative, interactive, hands-on approach to vocabulary! What better way to retain the learning of new words? Using index cards, a file box, and a good dictionary, this approach is a welcome departure from the typical workbook fare. And, subtitled: Help for Reading, Writing, Spelling and S.A.T. Scores, it’s obvious from looking at this book that it would, indeed, do just that! How? By teaching the roots of the English language found in Greek and Latin. Since the majority of our words are rooted in these classical languages, mastering these roots is a key that will open the door to understanding a myriad of words! The creative activity suggestions in this book could become the basis for wonderful unit studies as well.

I thought I would try this for my six year old.  He is already reading so this might be a tad easy.

Dictating one spelling word a day.  Your child will be introduced to frequently used words as well as the writings of great men and women of history!

Driver's Edge...Know Yourself, Know Your Limits!

What an awesome program! A program that could save your teens life, yet free. An experience behind the wheel for young drivers with Pro drivers;learning safety along with accident avoidance. Don’t make the same mistake I did. I left the responsibility with my children’s drivers education teacher; learning only basic driving skills and how to pass the test. Did you know, motor vehicle collisions kill more teens every year than drugs, guns and violent crimes combined.  Up till now, I only taught my children to pass the test. Thanks to Drivers Edge our children can learn the following fundamentals for free:

- Written tests designed to measure students’ driving knowledge before and after completing the course.

 - Interaction with local law enforcement, including impaired driving awareness and seat belt safety instruction.

- Proper car maintenance session, based on Firestone Complete Auto Care’s Car Care Academies.

- Classroom and behind-the-wheel defensive driving instruction on skid control, evasive lane changes, anti-lock braking skills and panic-braking techniques.

Don’t just tell him but show him with illustrations that will capture his interest. Why not capture the moment in your Nature Journal, as suggested on page 25, sketch your fish on one side and record your tackle and bait used on the other side.

Mr. Wiggles can catch fish too! I guess some fish like their bait a bouncing.

He was quite the angler landing this monstrous fish.

~ HOMESCHOOL OPEN HOUSE ~

Posted in Our Home School

Tiany over at Less of Me, More of Him, is hosting a "Homeschool Open House", so I decided to hop on board with this great idea! Feel free to join in as well! Thanks, Tiany!

A short intro about you, how many blessings? How long have you been Home schooling etc.. Just in case this is someone’s first visit to your blog

Welcome to Innovative Learning by Cindy Q. The Lord has blessed me with seven children; 21, 19, 18, 17, 11, 10 & 6. We have five boys and two girls. We began home schooling sixteen years ago. My poor older children suffered through all my trials although they do not appear to be suffering from any damage.  LOL

Your Home school Day, what does it look like?

My home-school day is very routine. We each have our own schedules we follow loosely. Our schedules are really our accountability sheets. We all know what is expected of us, so we have no excuse for not getting it done. I found this to help most when mom is gone because school and chores do still continue. See last years school schedule and chore chart;  new school year schedule under construction.

What curriculum will you be using? Do you not use a curriculum? Do you home school for FREE? Tell us about it!

I’ve tried just about every curriculum and then some. I’m sure, my husband wishes our home school was for free. We use a variety of curriculum or create our own, always trying to teach according to each child’s learning style and needs.   To view our Bible Devotional, Mathematics, Creation Science and  Ancient History; see Our Home School

I do plan ahead, this allows us the freedom to move at our own pace. Being organized makes life more relaxed and structured. Home-schooling allows me the freedom to teach according to the needs of our children not our lesson plan.

Do you schedule your day to the minute or go with the flow with no real structure?

The only times we try to follow; rising in the morning, breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime. We try to keep our routine structured and flexible allowing our schedules to mold around all those daily life interruptions.

Do you home school in a home school room, at the kitchen table, at a desk, in the park on the grass?

No home-school room. My younger children do have desks although they do very little school work at them. Where we go, school goes. You might find us in the kitchen, living room, hall, car, park or bedroom. (My younger children need supervision or will get distracted.)
