Our Bird Adventures

Posted in Life
If you notice I made a change in my side bar.  What used to be pumpkin puree is now photos of a bird and journal pages.  Yesterday, the children found a female goldfinch who did not appear to be doing well.  They thought at first her wing was broken, but it flew a few times.  She was breathing very rapidly and finally expired right after my Wonderful Husband caught her.

After some tears and sadness, we considered having her stuffed (no I am not being morbid).  I thought it would be a wonderful experience.  That is until I found out it was going to cost $125!  Needless to say, the bird will be buried in the back woods.  I will only take "wonderful experience" so far!

We did take a few moments and made some journal pages for our nature books.  My Dear Daughter Number Two also created a list for her notebook stating what one should do is they find a hurt animal.  One thing about feeding the birds, you run a much higher risk of experiencing bird mortality.

I'm so sorry about the bird. Every year my kids try to save a bird and they never survive. We have had bird burials, too-it's so sad for the kids-they so want to save it.

What a beautiful bird. I'm so sorry it didn't make it despite your valiant efforts. The kids journaling is really nice.

hey - me too. I'm a cranberry and popcorn Christmas gal -- great minds just think alike. Loved seeing the pictures of the bird and the kids drew really awesome pictures. And DD#2 I think did a great job thinking practically about what can and can't be done for an injured animal. Definitely thinking on her feet!!!! :-)

I loved your last entry~so sorry about the bird. I wanted to let you know that I believe we have a friend in common from your church (Robin). I live in the same town. She turned me on to your page and now I have my own! We are researching homeschooling for next year and are planning to do it. I've really enjoyed checking in on your page and some others. I am new to blogging so I have a lot to learn...do's and dont's...all of that. Thank you so much. Your blog entries have "inspired" me.
