I Am "ichin" To Find The Answer To This Question...

Posted in Life
How allergic to poison ivy are you?  My Darling Daughter Number One is VERY sensitive to the poison ivy oil called urushiol oil.  She had her first bout of contact dermatitis two years ago in January.  Who gets that in the winter time??  She ended up having another bout in the spring time.

Then, after eating more than her fair share of mangoes during the month of June, she ended up with it all over her lips!  Yes, there is urushiol oil in the skin and bark of mangoes.

We have had this vine growing in our back yard since we moved in.

I had no idea what poison ivy, poison oak or Virginia creeper looked like, so of course, I googled it.  I found out this was "probably" Virginia creeper so I did not worry too much.

Then neighbors and friends said it was poison oak.  We decided I would try to dispose of it as carefully as I could so that I would not get it (Wonderful Husband has already shown a sensitivity toward poison ivy in the past).  Everyone stayed away and we were fine.  Except that Darling Daughter Number One would still have occasional breakouts.  She even had one when we came back from visiting family.  My uncle had removed some from his property two weeks before we were there.  She picked it up after hugging him.

All this to say that daughter has it again in small spots on her legs.  I have pulled the poison oak/Virginia creeper out by the handfuls with my bare hands.  It is not poison oak or I am not allergic.  The only thing we can figure is that in mowing on Friday, she went through some and its oil got on her legs some how.  So now, she is allergic to poison ivy, poison oak, mangoes and Virginia creeper!!

So, how many of you have had this happen??

My family is allergic to this stuff and we have a friend that can have outbreaks from other people mowing and the oil being in the air. He is so allergic to it that he won't even go in a yard if he sees it anywhere!! We use a product called TechNu, which can be purchased at a drug store. If you are doing yard work, when you are finished just rub this all over your body and then shower. If you have any of the oil on you it will wash it off. It works wonders and once when my husband didn't realize that a vine he was totally in with no shirt on was poison ivy, he came in and washed in this stuff and did not have an outbreak. I recommend anyone, espcially with kids that play outside a lot, to have this handy! We don't live without it anymore!

I get it from the pollen in the air! It hits me and I have to get shots, and be on meds for a month. I actually get rash on top of rash. Mangos make my face, hands and feet swell until the skin cracks and it looks like I have been beat when the swelling goes down.... Hint stay away from any vine that has "fur".
If someone burns the ivy you can inhale it and then it's really bad as the rash can break out in your mouth, nose, under your eye lids, in your lungs etc. It caused a friend of mine a week in the hospital.
BTW the more you get it the worse it gets each time.

I have one son who is very sensitive to the three: Poison Oak, Ivy and Sumac. It can even just be in the air and he gets it. This year we had alot of fires in the area. Alot of folks were getting Poison Ivy from the wind. The oil can remain on clothing for a very long time. Pets may also have the oil on their fur.

The most important thing to remember about poison ivy, oak or sumac is, "Leaves of 3 let them be!" A good site for pics is:
