A Hiking We Will Go...
After Thanksgiving, on the Friday when everyone was "hiking" around the stores, we were hiking out in the woods. I have felt inspired to take my children on more hikes. We began with a 3 mile hike. As we all set out with hopes abounding and feeling like we could conquer a mountain, that is just what we did. Living in the "foothills", there are quite a few "mountains" to conquer.

We were bundled and booted and ready to go. The weather was brisk, just perfect for hiking. We walked along the side of a huge mountain (I can call it a mountain because I have lived in Oklahoma and I know what flat is. This was not flat.). We were between the wall of the mountain and the river running around it. My little guy had no problem walking his way around the path. I, on the other hand, am afraid of heights. I did okay, but tried not to look in the direction of down too often.
We were feeling quite full of ourselves as we walked for about an hour. This is easy. You know that moment when you realize things are not as easy as they once seemed? Well, we had reached that moment. We rounded the bend and looked up. I did not realized that the rock we were walking next to was the same rock we would be walking on top of!!

I remember thinking that I could honestly die on this mountain, you know, the one I was going to "conquer"! Here are my children trudging up the steep incline, how would it look for their mother to collapse and have to be carried off!! (or rolled...whichever was easier)
After stopping two times for an indeterminate amount of rest, we started to even out. I looked back at my aunt and uncle and asked, "How much further can it possibly be?" Had they brought me out here to die? Maybe they do not really want to sell me their house????
It was all down hill from there...literally! We were walking down so quickly that skinny little path that one misstep would slip our feet from under us. We made it though. When we "sighted the van" there was a run that would have rivaled the horses running for the barn.
My little guy (who is six now) was up the next morning, ready for another hike, bless him. Praise God, it was raining! |
