Bless Your Heart...

Guess what?  I am a Yankee.  You may not have known that based on my blog.  I was born and raised in the north.  After I married I have spent about four years in the midwest and about five years in the north and then we moved south about five years ago.  Why am I sharing all of this with you?  Well, hang in there, I will get to my point.  This post was floating around in my head before I fell asleep last night.  Some posts have done that in the past, but I never remember them.  This one, I did.

Let me begin by saying to all my southern friends...I know what "bless your heart" really means.  I know that it is code for, "too pathetic to live".  My good southern friends already know that I have deciphered this code, but I think it is important that everyone knows that I know.

Let us look at some daily life examples:

Suzy and Joan are discussing Mary and her new hair color.  "Mary had her hair colored the other day.  Poor thing.  Her blonde hair has turned green and has a slight "burnt" smell...bless her heart."

Or another:

"Marsha says she can fit in a size 8, but a size ten would not fit over her ankle...bless her heart"

Okay, I think you are getting my drift.  Before I get a bunch of comments that you are dropping my blog like a hot potato, let me explain myself.  I do know that there are times when you are "blessing my heart" because I really need it blessed.  I know I am not ALWAYS "too pathetic to live".  I just needed to give you some background.

I am visiting my family in the north.  Do you have those blessings in your life who feel the need to say what they are thinking without regard to the effect?  Of course, we all do.  Well, I had a "bless your heart" moment yesterday.  You all are going to love the irony.

I was told that I had purple circles under my eyes and that I needed to get more sleep.  Now, she did not say "bless your heart", but I definitely heard it!  She asked if I was sleeping enough and I stated that, in fact I had gotten a good night sleep the night before.  She look troubled as to the reason for my circles (which I really could not find without a flourescent lightbulb).  I told her, "Oh, I am just getting old and ugly."  She nodded her head in agreement and then asked how old I was.  When I told her, she continued to nod.  BLESS MY HEART!!!

Living on the Fringe

That is a strange title, is it not?  That is where I feel my life is right now.  Anyone who "relocates" knows what I am talking about.  This is our fourth move, hopefully our last.  But then, that is all up to God.  We go where He wants us.  But, back to the fringe.  If you have never moved before, you may be wondering what I mean by living on the fringe.

Living on the fringe is sort of like living between two worlds.  You no longer live in the place you left, but your thoughts and way of being are still there.  You do not have a "life", so to speak, in the new place, so you have to make things up as you go along.  You need to make a new life.

Make a new life.  How does that happen?  You cannot just jump into a new life.  You have to "fringe-live" for a while.  That requires some "floating".  Think about a butterfly and how it works a new garden.  She flitters and flutters from flower to flower looking for the best nectar.  She begins the visit not lingering too long in one place.  That will not last, though.  Eventually, that same butterfly will come back to the same flower which proved to give her that which she was searching.

As it is with the fringe, you float until you find that thing, that relationship, that belonging in which you are searching.  It can take a little while, sometimes.

And what about the old life?  How do you hold on to that old life and what do you do with the parts you hold onto?  Good question.  How do you hold on to the old life?  The old life is made up of the relationships you take with you.  The things and events really do not matter so much.  The relationships are the things that shape who you are.

So, what do you do with the parts you hold onto?  Each relationship looks a little different.  No matter what you do, each part will not be exactly the same.  The time and distance changes the way it looks.  But that does not mean it ends.  It is just different.

So, here I sit, on the fringe of things.  Closing up things from the past and waiting for the future to begin.  Waiting with expectancy of what is to come.  Waiting.  Waiting.  Waiting.  Waiting.  Alright, already!

A Hiking We Will Go...

After Thanksgiving, on the Friday when everyone was "hiking" around the stores, we were hiking out in the woods.  I have felt inspired to take my children on more hikes.  We began with a 3 mile hike.  As we all set out with hopes abounding and feeling like we could conquer a mountain, that is just what we did.  Living in the "foothills", there are quite a few "mountains" to conquer.

We were bundled and booted and ready to go.  The weather was brisk, just perfect for hiking.  We walked along the side of a huge mountain (I can call it a mountain because I have lived in Oklahoma and I know what flat is.  This was not flat.).  We were between the wall of the mountain and the river running around it.  My little guy had no problem walking his way around the path.  I, on the other hand, am afraid of heights.  I did okay, but tried not to look in the direction of down too often.

We were feeling quite full of ourselves as we walked for about an hour.  This is easy.  You know that moment when you realize things are not as easy as they once seemed?  Well, we had reached that moment.  We rounded the bend and looked up.  I did not realized that the rock we were walking next to was the same rock we would be walking on top of!!

I remember thinking that I could honestly die on this mountain, you know, the one I was going to "conquer"!  Here are my children trudging up the steep incline, how would it look for their mother to collapse and have to be carried off!!  (or rolled...whichever was easier)

After stopping two times for an indeterminate amount of rest, we started to even out.  I looked back at my aunt and uncle and asked, "How much further can it possibly be?"  Had they brought me out here to die?  Maybe they do not really want to sell me their house????

It was all down hill from there...literally!  We were walking down so quickly  that skinny little path that one misstep would slip our feet from under us.  We made it though.  When we "sighted the van" there was a run that would have rivaled the horses running for the barn.

My little guy (who is six now) was up the next morning, ready for another hike, bless him.  Praise God, it was raining!

Green Smoothie Revisited...

Okay, after the last attempt at a green smoothie, I gave it another shot.  Introducing...my second attempt at a green smoothie.

Yes, it is pink.  Much, much more successful.  I made it with cherry juice, kale, pears, blueberries, and a banana.  My Darling Daughter Number One was much happier with this one.

One problem, my blender is not strong enough to completely liquefy everything.  I guess if we do not mind chewing our smoothies, it will not be a big deal.

My Green Smoothie Adventures...

Here is something to make you laugh.  I ventured into green smoothie world today!  I followed a little recipe off the internet and then changed it, of course!  I did a bunch of strawberries and 2 cups of water, some ground flax seed (dark brown and way too much) and then some kale and spinach with agave nectar.

Okay...  The concoction started out red, then I started adding the other ingredients.  This became a "brown smoothie" which didn't look good.  I think I may have officially lost My Wonderful Husband on name alone.  I didn't get a picture (don't ask me why).

My garden has lots of nice organic matter in it now.  The flax seed made it smell not very yummy.  Darling Daughter Number Two asked if it would be safe to pour it on our plants.  I told her that if we are putting it into our bodies, the plants will love it!!  Darling Daughter Number One tried it and didn't mind, but she is looking forward to some improvement.  My little trooper!  I even added some orange juice to "help"!  Do not worry, though.  I am not daunted!  I will prevail (Lord willing).

My Bread Boo-Boo...

This post is for the two people who still read my blog (thanks Mom and Dad).  I have been "missing-in-action" for a long time.  Sorry!  I have many posts written in my head, but the time never presents itself to get them to computer!  I have been spending quite a bit of time studying health and nutrition.  I will have to write that blog later.

This was a very important post which I could not wait a moment longer to write.  Most of my friends think that I am the "all-powerful, Master Baker".  I needed to post this picture today to document that, yes, I too have my fair share of flops!!

This is what you call a major lack of gluten development!  It looked pretty from the outside but the inside decided it would make a better pipe than a loaf of bread.  My little guy was not impressed when I gave him his bread with homemade peanut butter for lunch.

Bread disasters can happen anywhere, anytime.  You never see them coming (well, sometimes you do).  Don't give up!  One day, you too will be a "Master Baker" like ME!!
