May. 27, 2009 I Love My New Dentist Office!
I have never been a "fan" of going to the dentist. As a matter of fact, I would rather labor for twelve hours than have a cleaning. From what "they" tell me (most dentists), that is a common feeling. Well, no more. I just got back from my first cleaning and it was the most relaxing experience...EVER!
I took my children for their cleanings a couple of weeks ago. Everyone came through with flying colors and left there quite happy. Three of my darlings even got to watch movies during their cleanings (how cool is that?).
Let me start by painting a picture for you, though. As anyone who has children knows, spending time in a waiting room can be...interesting. Add the fact that there are five children and only six seats and you can see how "interesting" it can be. Of course, I make a few sit on the floor by my feet. We need to be polite even if we seem a bit awkward.
So, I am sitting there, of course, doing some school (because what is the homeschool motto? have books, will travel) when a nicely dressed lady walks in and sits down. The receptionist asks her, "Would you like to go to the Relaxation Room?" and she leaves through the door. Do not think for a moment that I was not wondering if I may have driven her there...
Oh, and I need to spend a little time on the receptionist. She is so beautiful, inside and out. She is one of those women who sounds beautiful. When she answers the phone she says, "Thank you for calling, I CAN help you" (okay, it loses something in translation, but you have to trust me). You know those self-help tapes that have the soft, soothing voice of the lady telling you to relax and breath deeply and believe you are special? That must be her second job!
So, back to the waiting room which could be a form of natural birth control...I am sitting there, silently thinking that I MUST know about the Relaxation Room. I guess if I am the one driving people there, they are certainly not going to show me the way. Fast forward to today.....
I saw the relaxation room!
(in hushed tones for full affect)
I walked into the office and chatted it up with the receptionist, trying not to be obvious that I was wanting to see the Relaxation Room. She says (in her relaxing, soft and soothing voice), "Would you like some paraffin wax for your hands?" Never done it before, but YOU BETCHA! So, she took me back and I dipped my hands. She wrapped them in plastic wrap and put over-sized oven mitts on me and asked, "Would you like to sit in the Relaxation Room?" Another big YOU BETCHA on that one.
Now, the Relaxation Room is nothing spectacular. Just a dimly lit room with really comfy chairs, but I truly felt like I had "arrived". You know that feeling of longing being fulfilled? I was there. I have been to the other side and it was good. I have joined the group of "Relaxation Room Users". Compare that group to the "Are They All Yours...Bless Your Heart" group. It could be a real toss up to decide which group I would want to "live" in, but when it comes to seeing the dentist, I would rather the previous.

Nov. 4, 2008 My New Backyard...Lord willing!
I realized how long it had been since I last posted when I looked at the last post date! Yikes! Well, a lot has happened since the last post. God sold our house! That is an outstanding blessing. We are now living with my aunt and uncle in the house we are going to buy from them. They will be spending the next several months building a new home up the hill from us. It is very exciting to live next to family. Here are a few photos Darling Daughter Number One took today:

Enjoy the most beautiful time of the year!! |

Sep. 30, 2008 What We Have Been Up To...
Here are a few photos taken by my Darling Daughter Number One.
This little bumblebee was photographed at the apple orchard we went to. The orchard has a field full of sunflowers.

These are the ducks we are trying not to "offend".

Just a pretty shot to remind you that there is always a "silver lining".

Have a beautiful day!

Sep. 2, 2008 I Am "ichin" To Find The Answer To This Question...
How allergic to poison ivy are you? My Darling Daughter Number One is VERY sensitive to the poison ivy oil called urushiol oil. She had her first bout of contact dermatitis two years ago in January. Who gets that in the winter time?? She ended up having another bout in the spring time.
Then, after eating more than her fair share of mangoes during the month of June, she ended up with it all over her lips! Yes, there is urushiol oil in the skin and bark of mangoes.
We have had this vine growing in our back yard since we moved in.
I had no idea what poison ivy, poison oak or Virginia creeper looked like, so of course, I googled it. I found out this was "probably" Virginia creeper so I did not worry too much.
Then neighbors and friends said it was poison oak. We decided I would try to dispose of it as carefully as I could so that I would not get it (Wonderful Husband has already shown a sensitivity toward poison ivy in the past). Everyone stayed away and we were fine. Except that Darling Daughter Number One would still have occasional breakouts. She even had one when we came back from visiting family. My uncle had removed some from his property two weeks before we were there. She picked it up after hugging him.
All this to say that daughter has it again in small spots on her legs. I have pulled the poison oak/Virginia creeper out by the handfuls with my bare hands. It is not poison oak or I am not allergic. The only thing we can figure is that in mowing on Friday, she went through some and its oil got on her legs some how. So now, she is allergic to poison ivy, poison oak, mangoes and Virginia creeper!!
So, how many of you have had this happen?? |

In the middle of getting the house pulled together, I was called up for Jury Duty. Inside I was thinking, "This is NOT what I need right now!" But outwardly (and for the children), I was saying, "There is a reason for this right now. Maybe you will get to meet a judge!!"
Yes, I took all five of my children down to the courthouse. If I could have found a babysitter for today, I could have found one for the court days. They all filed into the row with their bags full of books and an extra bag with our sandwiches (yes, I packed a lunch, I was not taking any chances).
The lawyers were coming in and getting comfortable, they were in for the long haul. The children were quietly asking questions about the goings on. My seven year old Darling Son, full of awe, said, "Mom...this is the closest I have ever been to a policeman."
After the judge came in, he began reading questions that we needed to answer yes or no to. If the answer was yes, then we needed to come forward and speak with him. I answered NO in my head to all the questions! I decided that this was still the time to go forward with my legitimate reasons for not being able to serve.
So I stood in the line and waited my turn. My heart was beating out of my chest and I continued to rehearse in my head what I would say. I have five children. I am their sole caregiver during the day. I home school them. On and On...
My turn is next. Relax and take a deep breath. I step forward and explained that I have a legitimate reason for needing to be excused. I go through my list with the least shaky voice I can muster. He smiles at me and says, "Are you the old woman in the shoe?" And then excuses me.
I thanked him, collected my children and was on my way. See? Nothing to worry about! |
