Welcome to In The Bookcase's new blog layout!

As you can see, it's decorated in an Autumn theme.
I started working on it Friday, and finished most of it by Sunday. I'm still tweaking little bits of this and that.

    What do you think?

I'm sure you're familiar with playing an Ad Lib game. You play by coming up with random words and fitting them into a little story, to create a (sometimes) hilarious scenario to read.

For the first time on my blog, I'm introducing my own Ad Lib puzzle--Book Version!

Why is it called "Book Version"?
I took a small portion of a real book to create the ad lib from. By using a few paragraphs, and replacing some words, I came up with a list for you to fill out. Your own words will be used to re-create the story again, and this time it will be completely different than the orignal story! Make sense?

You might be curious to know what book I'm using to create the activity.
The book is "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. You can read a review I wrote for this book by visiting The Backyard blog.

    24-NOUN

    Farmer Boy

    Here's the INSTRUCTIONS:

-*-Fill out the above list, using the appropriate type of word.

-*-Leave a comment with your list of words.

After I get your list, I will insert the words into the "Farmer Boy" story and you'll be able to see how it turned out.

I will also post the real paragraphs from the book, and compare the original with yours.

    my book review:

      "Les Miserables"
      written by Victor Hugo
      -1260 pages-

"Les Miserables" is a fictional collection of many people's lives. Each person's story is somehow connected to another one, and they all lead up to joining with one another at some point. There is one main character, who in some way, meets all of the other characters in the book. That is Jean Valjean, a convict. He had been in prison for 19 years, and now he has finally been released. Wherever he goes, if only to the next town, or many miles away, even several years later, police inspector Javert is not very far off the trail to capture Jean Valjean at any opportune moment.

Because he feels he must hide his past, Jean Valjean is not too keen on becoming close friends with other people. He created a few identities for himself, and can switch back and forth to a different person's name, whenever he feels threatened. Some people think of him as a very odd man and can see that he has something to hide, but still do not know his reasoning. Others accept his mysterious ways and might even believe his disguises.

This is the first book I have read from Victor Hugo. I was very impressed, and think that he did a superb job in writing this book, back in 1862 when it was published. I can't wait to read more from this author. There are so many descriptions of the scenes going on, that the reader feels the same emotions of pain, anger, or happiness that the character is going through. Jean Valjean is a very mysterious man, and even to the very end, you're not quite sure what he's thinking or trying to accomplish with his perplexing actions.

I would recommend "Les Miserables" for anyone who will put a lot of thought into the story, and who will stay with the book once you begin. Be prepared for deep thinking, and expect a big French history lesson too. It was a very interesting and fascinating book to read. It makes great material for High School literature. The immense size really attracted me to this book of more than 1200 pages!

By reading this book, you will be taken on quite a journey. Once I finished, I felt like it was a lifetime ago since I read anything half so intriguing. I immensely enjoyed it, and one day (in a few years) I will have to read it again.

    "Jean Valjean had this peculiarity, that he might be said to carry two knapsacks;
in one he had the thoughts of a saint,
in the other the formidable talents of a convict.
He helped himself from one or the other as occasion required."
-Les Miserables (Volume II, Book V, Chapter V)

    I have some exciting news....
Yesterday morning I took my driving test and passed. This means I now have my driver's license!

I was very surprised at how easy that the driving test was! The most tasking thing that happened was at the beginning, the lady testing me was checking all of my front and back signal lights & brake lights. Everything was fine, until she noticed that the center brake light on the back wasn't working. So, my mom & I had to leave to buy a new bulb for the brake light. After that was settled, I finally got to resume my test with no more troubles.

The entire driving test lasted for only a few minutes, it seemed. There were 7 different stop signs/stop lights that I went through. I also had to drive in reverse for a few feet.
I thought I would probably have to park the car a couple different times (at least). But I only parked the car once in the test, and when I did, I had to position the tires as if I was doing an up-hill park. Thank goodness I didn't have to attempt to parallel park, because that would have been a disaster.

Basically, the test seemed like I just weaved my way through a few streets, and I was already finished. It was all over so soon! Anyways, I'm very glad it's done, so I don't have to worry about taking my test anymore. It's quite a happy feeling.

Recently, my family had the privilege of pet-sitting our neighbor's dog, while they were gone for a few days. Here are some pictures of our dog and their dog together...

Our dog, Terra (the Westie) and the neighbor's dog, Blade (the Dachshund)

    "Hey, did you hear that?"

    Terra

    Blade

They got along great with each other, even though there were a couple growls, and maybe one friendly little nip.
Both dogs seemed to enjoy being together.

It was so much fun to have 2 dogs in the house!

I thought I would share with my readers the latest craft project I'm working on!

It is a Latch Hook kit. The finished project will look like this:

The picture does show a Christmas design, so I am planning to stick with my new project until I finish it... hopefully before Christmas!

This is a picture of the first row I did (it is the bottom of the latch hook design).

Now that I've been working on my latch hooking for a few days, I have completed 8 rows of it.
    You can see the progress:

I thought you would also like to see my big pile of yarn packets....!!

I am enjoying my new hobby very much!

I was wondering if anyone else has done a latch hook project?

    * pseudo: 1. not actually, but having the appearance of; pretended; false or spurious; sham.    2. almost, approaching, or trying to be.

Perhaps the most common word with the suffix "pseudo" that we are all accustomed to is pseudonym, which means: a false or fictitious name; pen name.
This word "pseudonym" has always intrigued me for years, and I recently came across a handful of similar words that have the same prefix.
I thought I would share them...

    * pseudothyrum (soo-doe-thie'-rum): a private or secret entrance

    * pseudologist (sood-all'-e-jist): a liar; teller of false things

    * pseudomnesia (soo-dom-nee'-zi-a): memory for things that never happened

    * pseudepisematic (soo-ep"-i-se-mat'-ik): an animal colored to look like its prey or its surroundings

    * pseudepigraphous (soo-doe-thie'-rum): signed with a phony or false name

I can just see myself using these words in upcoming writing projects & stories. I actually can't wait to make use of some of these!
