Justin Morgan Had a Horse - by Marguerite Henry

Character: Justin Morgan

Setting:  Green Mountain country, Vermont (late 1700s-early 1800s)

Problem:  Justin was stuck with an undersized horse that everyone considered to be worthless.

Plot:  A young friend of Justin’s took on the role of training the horse, Little Bub, day and night, at every possible chance.

Solution:  Anyone who thought Little Bub couldn’t be as good of a worker as other horses, was proved wrong in their thinking. Out of great practice, he started winning all the log-pulling competitions, and became one of the fasted horses around.

1.6.2009 - Lesson 1

I really love your template, BTW. Very eye-catching.

Welcome to the workshop. I'm excited to read your lessons and help you either 1) learn to write or 2) help you become a better writer.

This first lesson looks easy, but you'd be surprised how many mix up the problem and plot or can't identify the solution or any other variation (usually the younger students).

You have done a great job with the 5 elements of this story (Justin Morgan . . .). The goal here is to get you to begin reading often with the "5 elements of story" in mind, and to read with "author eyes" so you can see how the author has built their story and what materials they've used.

You're off to a great start!
