Webster's 1828

I am currently 4-Ring Literature. Among the many enlightening ideas I have found concerning this basic of courses, one in particular stands out.

The first thing to do when 4-Ring is to define the subject using Webster's 1828. And then to define key words. One of my key words was "composition." Here is the definition as it relates to Literature:

2. In literature, the act of inventing or combining ideas, clothing them with words, arranging them in order, and in general, committing them to paper, or otherwise writing them. Hence,
3. A written or printed work; a writing, pamphlet or book.

Is that not beautiful and life-giving? The act of inventing ideas and clothing them with words, oh I get lost in the imagery of it!

For fun, I thought I would look at the Merriam-Webster dictionary online for their definition. Here it is as it relates to Literature:

1 a: the act or process of composing; specifically : arrangement into specific proportion or relation and especially into artistic form
5: an intellectual creation: as a: a piece of writing; especially : a school exercise in the form of a brief essay

Not quite as moving as the original. Another aspect of defining this word that I found very telling of the evolution of our language was the thoroughness of the 1828 definition. There were 15 different definitions for "composition." The Merriam-Webster had a mere seven. Let me add that the latter defined the word fine, however much was lost in the completeness and beauty of our fine language. Language is a wonderful gift of our Lord and should be celebrated as such, not overlooked.

Noah Webster is a fine man and worthy of rememberance and studying. His work should be among every literary home.

Has anyone any other insights into the excellence of Webster's 1828 over contemporary dictionaries? I'd love to share your stories.

What Is Shepherd's Fold?

Our School's Motto is: Fidelis, Virtus, Continentia

Our School's Motto means: Faith, Virtue, Self-Control

We chose Shepherd's Fold as the name of our school to reflect Jesus, our Shepherd, leading and directing our learning and our lives. The Lord created us to be multi-dimensional. Each part of us needs His guidance. As He cares, directs, and protects for every aspect of our lives, then we, with His help, care for, direct, and protect our children.
