Higher Mathematics

Posted in Older Son
I have to brag a bit on my middle child. Pilot is only 5 - some days it seems he is already 5! He started Kindergarten this year. He can read somewhat and knows his numbers. Overall, I am very pleased with his progress and his attitude.

This evening during dinner he was relating a story to me. On Monday we had dinner with some friends of ours whose son is 9. Here is what Pilot said to me:

Mom, K*** told me he has a friend, J***, who is ten years old. That is five years older than me. That means that Kevin is four years older than me.

I asked him if anyone told him those numbers. He said no, and his sister confirmed that she didn't say anything to him. On his own he figured out the age difference of him and the first boy. He didn't do 9 minus 5 to get four. He reasoned that since he was five years younger than the ten year old and that the other boy was one year younger than the ten year old, then that boy is four years older than him. WOW!!! The logic this child produced to get the correct answer to a question that he asked himself.

I am amazed!!!! This is why I homeschool. I love watching the light come on. Even if I am not the one powering it!!!

For my faithful friends who have been wondering what happened to me this month, I am sorry for not having any updates. Many things have happened; and because of this, this month has gone by very quickly. Hopefully, now that we are mostly on break, I can do some BPA blogging.

I am needing to finish Rudiments... Anyone out there willing to share Rudiments insight with me?!?!

Happy Birthday, my Pilot

Posted in Older Son

My oldest son turned five yesterday. He is an amazing little boy. Nothing escapes his notice nor his commentary. We frequently are in stitches over what he says. For instance, in discussing fathers one day, we brought up to him that my mom still has her dad - that is Great-Grandpa. He looked at us with such a puzzled look. We kept encouraging him, "You know Great-Grandpa, we see him every week at church. He is the pastor." Finally the light comes on and he says, "Oh yeah, short man, white hair."

My little pilot loves anything that flies. Helicopters fly over our house sometimes and as soon as he hears them he is either outside looking at it or by the windows searching for it. He will sit through on hour long, military production of the SR-71. This is his favorite plane.

He couldn’t wait to “do” school like his older sister, so with reluctance on my part he is “doing” school. If his attitude was anything else, I would have waited, but he devours what we are learning. I hope he never looses this intensity or desire. He reads the McGuffey readers to me and does writing and math pages. During Bible, he will copy simple phrases that I have on the board. Should you peruse his notebook, do not be alarmed at the number of missiles and rockets. There are also pictures of the patriarchs. I think there is one of Jesus by a rocket. He LOVES flying things. He has recently figured out how to draw helicopters. That might fill up his math notebook.

The Lord is amazing and shows me aspects of Him in my children. My pilot is very tender, intelligent, thoughtful, and quick. The Lord has made him for His purpose. Thank you, my Lord, for such a wonderful child.

This is a picture of the little pilot flying arrows with daddy.

What Is Shepherd's Fold?

Our School's Motto is: Fidelis, Virtus, Continentia

Our School's Motto means: Faith, Virtue, Self-Control

We chose Shepherd's Fold as the name of our school to reflect Jesus, our Shepherd, leading and directing our learning and our lives. The Lord created us to be multi-dimensional. Each part of us needs His guidance. As He cares, directs, and protects for every aspect of our lives, then we, with His help, care for, direct, and protect our children.

The Good Shepherd Art Piece

African Gospel Art has several pieces. This one about the Good Shepherd really connected with me. The kind owner of the site is allowing me to use it in my blog. Please visit the art work; it really is delightful.
