Do Hard Things: Discussion for Chapter Two

Thanks to all, today and to the day we finish this discussion, for your responses! It was so encouraging to me that people care about how they live their lives, whether or not they accept low expectations! Momsie, I haven't thus far run across a book like this for "old folks", haha, why don't you write one?! If you'd like to read "Do Hard Things", our copy is upstairs. ;-)

Chapter two deals mainly with the beginning of the two Harris brothers' own personal rebellion against the modern views about teens, the false assumptions that shackle us to low expectations. Why did they feel such a need to get out there and fight against the things attacking teens, concepts and expectations frought with pictures and portrayals everywhere of indolence and laziness? "The teen years are not a vacation from responsibilty", they told a newspaper columnist. "They are the training ground of future leaders who dare to be repsonsible now." Notice that reoccuring word "dare". What comes to mind when you hear that word? Bungee jumping? Speeding around the racetrack? Doing *gulp* polynomial division?! Fact is, we've lost sight of what to dare is actually meant to mean. When one conforms to a rebel mindset, against the world, against modern society, one is daring to go against the Norm, what is politically correct, what will make them look cool in the eyes of their peers. While this may seem scary and well nigh impossible at times (who wants to look foolish or stupid?), God calls us to go against the flow, to stand out in the crowd. Not for personal gain, "Oh look at me, look at how bold I am!" but to grab people's attention and draw it to the light of God within us. With the degradation of society, we HAVE to go against all this stuff that is wrong, that is standing in the way of us so that we can run unfettered towards the goal.

As you read about the two Harris brothers and their stair-step climb to worldwide recognition, does it seem amazing to you how far they've come? Does the surging response to their website, The Rebelution, surprise you? It shouldn't. When God works with His children for His glory, big things are bound to happen. Faith without works is dead, we have to be willing to do whatever it takes to bring honor to God in a dark world that has tried again and again to erase God from their chalkboards and governmental laws. Are we going to stand for this?!

Questions for discussion:

Give your own definition for the word "rebelution", keeping in mind what they said about their righteous uprising: "We're not rebelling against institutions or even against people. Our uprising is against a cultural mindset that twists the purpose and potential of the teen years and threatens to cripple our generation. Our uprising won't be marked by mass riots and violence, but by millions of individual teens quietly choosing to turn the low expectations of our culture upside down"

Can you think of other young people in history, ancient or recent, who have dared to rebel against the cultural normality?

Do you consider yourself a rebelutionary? Do you want to become one?

Jan. 18, 2009 - Meaning of the Word "Rebelution"

Written by Brianna

To me, that word means numerous things... It means going against the normality of society, living to glorify God & God alone, showing the world that there is no such thing as a "teenager", but rather young adults who do or don't know how to act their age, & delighting in being different from others.
I recently heard a couple of adults speaking about what "young people are like these days" (in other words; teenagers). They said that they are irresponsible, arrogant, & don't know how to use the brain God gave them. I have to tell you, this conversation rather annoyed me, because I know that not all young people are like that. People highly underestimate young people & I think that's why we have taken on this mindset - because it is expected of us... I think it's time to do the unexpected for goodness sake! And for this very reason, because society expects so very little from "teenagers", if we bodly step out & do something opposite of the norm, we can shine brightly for God.
Well, so much for a "quick" answer to your question... *Looks sheepish*
