Discussion for Chapter Four

It's easy to live for fun. Face it, dear Reader, we are all selfish and all want to live for ourselves, it's our nature. Especially during our teen years when we're fresh and alive and ready to get out there and DO things, we can easily channel our actions and motives in the wrong direction. We should be using this time to launch ourselves out into the world and honing in on our God-driven passion. Instead, many of us use the teen years as like a vacation from hard stuff, a last chance to goof off and act dumb before we have to "grow up". This is a very wrong take on things because we should be as "little children", coming unto the throne of God, and also because many people get so used to the low standards that they never grow out of them. Yes, we should grow in the sense of maturity and spiritual wisdom, but not as regards to how we look at God's love and accept it like children.

The Harris brothers call the folks who never grow out of this low-standardized stage "kidults". People who act like lazy, disobedient kids never want to do anything hard, anything noteworthy, for God's glory. So how can we get out of this awful future, a future of wasted time and energy, and DO something? In the context of the chapter there are five hard things. "Things that go outside your comfort zone...things that go beyond what is expected or required...things that are too big to accomplish alone...things that don't earn an immediate payoff...things that challenge the cultural norm." Seem scary? You bet it is...and totally worth it. Anything and everyone done for God's glory, against the dumbed-down culture, is worth the price, no matter how heavy. The book talks about the people who will dare to go against the Norm this way: "As young people, they made a habit of overcoming obstacles--forging the determination and character that empowered them for the rest of their lives. Again, that shouldn't surprise us. After all, that's how effort works. That's the genius of choosing to do hard things."

"As you read through the five categories, you probably thought of some hard things you've already done. If so, we're asking you to throw yourself into doing these things with a new level of passion because they are unique challenges God has prepared for you--because it's what you were made to do."

Questions for Discussion:

Have you personally known any "kidults"? Did their life seem appealing to you?

Have you ever done any of the five hard things? If so, what were they? Could you be doing more? (Be honest.)

God bless,

~PIP~
