There are some things that are just too big to pull off by yourself. These types of hards things require collaboration, the efforts of more than one person. "Unfortunately, more than any other kind of hard thing we talk about in this book, the response to big hard things is usually to give up before we even try. It's too big for me, end of story, we tell ourselves." This attitude is neither right nor Christian. With God, all things are possible, no matter how crazy or out there they seem. As you read about the amazing things the two Harris brothers write about in this chapter, do you come to realize the power of co-operation? The power that comes from working together with God's purpose leading can be greater than our wildest dreams. Collaboration: "Notice the parts co and labor in that word? They give you a picture of what collaboration is--literally 'working together'."
Of course, who we work together with is very important. We must choose coworkers with the same goals and hopes, the same rebellion against low-set standards, people who love God enough to live for Him, even if it's hard. 2 Timothy 2:22 tells us to "flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart: "We love that verse because it captures the rebelutionary mind-set of collaboration: rebelling against low expectations ("flee youthful passions"), doing hard things ("pursue [or strive after]"), and harnessing the power of teamwork ("along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart").
Of course, it takes determination and hard work to pull off a hard collaboration project. Lots of people working over a long period of time. Never, EVER give up, if you truly feel that God has called you and your collaborators to do this thing. We can often be a lot more effective if we fight God's battles for His glory with our fellow warriors.
If you are wondering whether or not to do a hard thing with collaboration, here are some questions to consider:
"What is God saying to me about this idea? What is the advice of my parents and other I trust? Am I the one to lead? / If not, can I be a catalyst and help get things moving? What are my personal strengths and weaknesses? Which people I know can help fill the gaps where my ability or knowledge falls short? Do I care enough about this issue to not just start something big, but to see it through no matter what?"
Get out there and go for it!
May God bless you, and may His light pierce your darkness!
