Chapter Ten Discussion

The Rebelution is more than simply a raising of personal goal levels; it is "...a counterculture of like-minded young people whose efforts God can bless and who together can make history." We have the unique opportunity to do something hard for God as a generation of individuals, united with one cause; to honor God through every aspect of our lives, never shirking from whatever He calls us to do. History-shaping works, something big, something hard. We were put on this earth, in this culture, in this time for a reason.

Rebelling against low standards is more than picking up the speed in math or going all out at a missions fund-raiser. "...we are change-makers who influence our world both as salt and light. That is to say, we influence our world both by fighting against sin, suffering and decay and by fighting for truth and justice." That covers a whole lot. How are we supposed to pull something like that off? What's involved?

"Our vision for the Reblution is to see [three qualities] coming together in a new generation--young people who are passionate about growing in Christlikeness and sharing the gospel (character), who care deeply about skill, strategy, and creativity (competence), and who are committed to finding and working with a community of like-minded rebelutionaries (collaboration) to bring hope and healing to a lost and hurting world."

Has God begun to work in your heart with crazy ideas, a broader view of what it means to be a rebel for a good cause? There's a bigger reality out there, life is more than what we may look upon it to be right now. Whose fault is that? Doing hard things will "launch you into the thick of the Christian counterculture we call the Rebelution." You're in a very exciting place. Open your heart to the lordship of Jesus Christ, let Him guide your actions. Pray that God will use you to be salt and light to the dark world. The Rebelution is a movement for change.

"Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)

Here are the lyrics to a song by Carman, called "R.I.O.T." I found them to reflect the Rebelutionary spirit:

"Webster's dictionary say a riot is like an unrestrained /Uproar in a public place, turbulent right in your face /With the facts we're gonna spread God's Word /And attack every lie you've heard /Like the doctrines of men that are still fallen prey /To the silvery sword of God's Word today /It's true, we look to heaven and our mansions in the sky /And it's true we've got the gaze of eternity in our eyes /But before this church is raptured /There's no way we're gonna leave here quiet /We want a righteous invasion of truth /We want a R.I.O.T.

Jesus, we're callin' on Your name

Jesus, we're gonna see a change

Jesus, we're taking on Goliath

With a righteous invasion of truth

We're want a R.I.O.T.

Righteous - to conform to the Bible /Invasion - an armed attack /Of truth - the real state of affairs /Like a church on the move that will not double back /From the fight, 'cause we're salt and light /And we thrive on Jesus, the theme of our lives /And here's the spin /Love nothin' but God, hate nothin' but sin /It's true, now the time to win nations for the Lord /And it's true, now the hour, the saints must go to war /We'll preach it, we'll sing it /We'll shout it, we'll cry it /'Cause desperate times need desperate action and that means /We need a R.I.O.T.

[chorus]

Satan is a madman, a relentless entity /He's the source of every plague known to the human family /We understand the mortal conflict in which we are engaged /And the gates of hell come crashing down when the saints of God begin to praise

[chorus 2X]"

Questions for Discussion:

What does it mean that we are to be salt and light?

What actions can you take to boost this personal-goal-setting to the next level, to launch it out into a public, generational counterculture?

Are you here for a reason? If so, are you fulfilling that reason?

May God bless you, and may His light pierce your darkness!
