• Aug. 20, 2008 - Quiet Contemplation

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Family

I wonder what he's thinking as he stands in quiet reflection? Or is he just working out the kinks to a mischievous plan to hop over the trail barrier and explore the stream below? I'm going to go with the latter. *grin* This morning we suited up in rain gear for a morning hike up at Mt. Washington. It was definitely wet but well worth it, the scenery was magnificent! It's hard to believe that just the other day we were melting in the heat and today I could have sworn we were teleported straight into fall. Now that I think of it I'm pretty sure that it always rains the first week in September just about the time school starts back up. It's a bit earlier this year but oh so welcome :)

• Aug. 20, 2008 - Pen Friends

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Pre-School

L has started writing letters to her new little friend from our weekly nature walks and it is so cute :) The above one is what we are taking with us today. She got K to draw a picture of her blowing out her birthday cake candles and then she put the little hello kitty stickers all around it. She even got really ambitious and wrote on it herself to! Looks like it may end up to be a great way to exercise our printing skills *grin*.

• Aug. 18, 2008 - My Little Girl Turned 5 Today :)

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Family

Today was L's 5th birthday and she was fit to be a princess *grin*, she even dressed the part by wearing her sparkling pink ball gown and feather tiara :)

My sister drove up and we all met at my moms house for lunch in the gazebo :) The night before a friend had dropped off some crab so we were treated to crab on croissants, tea sandwiches, fruit kabobs, veggies and dip and of course birthday cake!

I think that Opa is the culprit behind all of the present smelling that goes on around here! LOL. He loves to get
landjäger and other sausages as gifts (he's a complete meat-a-holic) and he's always teasing the kids by smelling his gifts and guessing what's inside *grin*. So of course L couldn't pass up the chance to smell her gifts to :) We gave her a feather pillow in a lovely soft flannel hot pink pillowcase that I had sewn for her. Of course she squeezed it before opening it and then sniffed at it a bit before she yelled out that it smelled like a pillow! She was all excited when she found out she was right. Now she has a special pillow to sleep on just like big brother K :)

Tante gave her some cute bubble blowing liquid in a chocolate ice cream cone with a cherry on top and it smelled like chocolate to!

It made some pretty fun bubbles to :) L blew them and Baby M snapped them up with his hands as fast as he could!

My mom spoiled her though by buying her the softest little baby doll you've ever seen. I washed up one of Baby M's old diaper bags and Omi filled it with bibs, bottles, spoons, bowls, a blanket and all the stuff you need to take care of a new little one :) L is completely in love with it and has named her Pipsy.

I'm not sure if it was the heat or all of the cake and food Opa ate, but he ended up sneaking in a little snooze at the table while we played with Pipsy and blew bubbles :) L had a great time and now I've got 2 days to plan what we are going to have when her little friend comes on Thursday for birthday party #2!

• Aug. 17, 2008 - Getting Ready

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Family

Tomorrow is L's 5th birthday and we are having a family celebration :) Her best friend who lives 2 hours away from us is unable to come so we are actually going to have a second birthday party on Thursday! We initially had some tears because L was extremely disappointed that they weren't going to make it right on her birthday but thoughts of two cakes and two parties seemed to cheer her up *grin*. Plus we've talked Tante (my sister) into coming up tomorrow as L's special guest :) L went into full party mode today. We picked out her dress, washed and braided her hair so that she would have pretty waved hair and even picked out seating arrangements! LOL.

I didn't realize until today just how important this birthday is to her. I know all birthdays are important events but this is the first year that she is SUPER excited about turning a new age, and she even made sure that we didn't tell her any of the secret plans because she wanted to be completely surprised and has taken part in planning it :) My little baby is growing up to be quite the event planner!

• Aug. 15, 2008 - Fool's Blue

Posted By BChsMamaof3

My mom has been asking me to find her a good book to read so I finally got my library order which included The Birth House by Ami McKay that I really enjoyed reading earlier this year :) In the book she refers to something called 'fool's blue'. A warm day, no breeze and beautiful blue skies that cause you to lose all sense of what needs to be done around you and results in lazing around *grin*.

I think that we must have been struck by a serious case of 'fool's blue' today! We spent many hours today sitting on the patio reading with our feet up.....

laughing and playing games :) It's real easy to forget about that big to do list when you're having so much fun!

• Aug. 13, 2008 - Happy 2nd Blog-a-versary!

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Fun Stuff
I can't believe that it has been two years since I first started blogging! I was so shy when I first started, didn't know what to write about and was afraid of sounding silly. Boy how I've changed! *grin* If you recall just the other day I shared a slightly off beat sticker of goats dropping turds off a roof. LOL.
I went searching through my entries to look back at my very first one and below is what I found:

Aug. 13th, 2006 ~ I've come across many different blogspots for homeschoolers in the last little while and I thought what a neat idea. A place to write a daily, weekly, or monthly journal if that is how often you can get to it. Sharing our personal trials and triumphs of our homeschooling journeys with one another. What a great idea, even if it is only for yourself as a way of unwinding and sorting through your day. I hope you enjoy reading my blog because I think I'm going to have a lot of fun writing in it.

Many Blessings.

I can definitely say that I've used my blog as a personal journal, shared in the joys and sorrows of so many wonderful bloggy friends I've met over the last 2 years and of course I've had a blast writing it! So in celebration of my 2nd 'blog-a-versary' I'm going to be giving away 2 goodies :)

Check back tomorrow for more details and to find out just what I've got hidden under my keyboard! *grin*

Blessings,

• Aug. 13, 2008 - Making 'Little Red Hens' Bread

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Pre-School

On our last visit to the library L picked up a copy of the classic 'The Little Red Hen' by Susanna Davidson. I just love this story :) We read it a couple of times and each time as we reached the end L would ask if we could make some of Little Red Hen's bread *grin* There's a recipe at the end of the book and of course it just begs to be made :)

So when Baby M went down for his nap today we got cracking. L was all excited to get on an apron and was even more thrilled when I told her that she could make it all by herself!

She measured out all of the ingredients, put them into the mixer and turned it on. You should have seen the smile beaming on her face as she kept repeating "Mommy, I'm really doing it all by myself!". It was so cute :)

It was quite a stiff dough so she really had to knead it! At one point she was getting tired and started to use her elbows! Good thing we scrubbed up good before we started. LOL.

Little Red Hen made hers into one big loaf but we decided that it would be fun to make mini loaves so that we could each have our own special loaf of bread. We didn't let big brother K know what we were doing either :) He had to close his eyes when he came near the kitchen so not to spoil her surprise for him.

Just about ready.....

Done! They were oh so good with some of our homemade strawberry rhubarb jam :) Little Red Hen sure knows how to make a tasty loaf of bread *grin*

• Aug. 12, 2008 - Above Rubies Email Devotional ~ Sowing Seeds Of Peace Pt.2

Posted By BChsMamaof3 in Devotionals

SOWING SEEDS OF PEACE

Part 2

Romans 16:20, "And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly."

How did you get on last week with sowing and speaking seeds of peace? You sowed a few seeds? That's great. You wished you could have sown more? Don't despair. Keep at it. Make it a habit and it will become a way of life. Here are some more seeds to sow.

Hold your Tongue for Peace

Perhaps this is one of the biggest ways to keep peace. It is so easy to spout off words that cause discord. It is so easy to react with words that cause pain or even incite rebellion. It is so easy to answer back when accused. I am always challenged by Jesus' reaction when he was accused:

Isaiah 53:7, "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth."

Matthew 26:62-63, "The high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace."

Matthew 27:11-13, "When he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word."

1 Peter 2:23, "Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again..."

If we cannot give a soft answer, it is best not to even open our mouths! Wow! This takes self control, doesn't it? But the Holy Spirit, who is self control, lives within us to help us.

Proverbs 15:1, "A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

Discipline for Peace

This doesn't sound very peaceful, does it? We often think that if we rock the boat we won't have peace! But the opposite is true. Discipline precedes peace! Read that again. Yes, discipline precedes peace! If your children are playing up, disobeying, being defiant and causing havoc in the home, you won't have any peace. To get peace, you must deal with the disobedience or bad behavior.

One of my favorite Scriptures for parenting is Proverbs 29:17, "Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul."

Do you want rest and peace in your home? Don't gloss over disobedience. Deal with the issues. Sow loving but firm discipline for disobedient behavior and you will reap a reward of rest. Many parents have no rest. Their children are a constant hassle to them because they have not been trained. They constantly yell at them but their behavior doesn't change.

It is a joy to watch parents who live a life of rest. I think of my daughter, Evangeline, who has nine children. Her husband, Howard and she have trained their children to respond with instant obedience from the time they were very little. They have never allowed disobedience or defiant behavior. They dealt with it immediately. They have reaped a wonderful reward of rest. Their children, aged from 15 years to 16 months are extraordinarily behaved. They give delight to their parents and everyone who is around them. They can take them anywhere and trust their behavior. Evangeline lives a life of a queen for her children give her no bother.

Hebrews 12:11 reiterates this, "Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but grievous; nevertheless, afterwards it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

I was quite taken aback when reading Romans 16:20 recently, "And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly." You would think that when it speaks of God defeating the devil that He would be referred to as the God or War or the Lord of hosts (which is the Lord of the armies of heaven).  It will not be a peaceful task to conquer Satan. It will be war and blood and tears. But, no. He is called the God of peace. I am sure this is because there can never be true peace while evil reigns and therefore it is the God of peace who wages war to bring peace.

If you have to have a little war before you have peace, don't be afraid. Covering over things will not bring peace. It is like a festering sore that will not heal until it is totally cleansed.

Keep sowing seeds of peace. We'll look at more next week.

Love from NANCY CAMPBELL

PRAYER:

"Lord, it is so easy to retaliate. Please help me to hold my tongue, and when I open my mouth, please help me to sow words of peace. Amen."

AFFIRMATION:

I aim for peace, but not by compromising.

Many women like to save these devotions. They print them out and keep them in a folder to read over and over again. Some print them out and pin them on the fridge with a magnet to read through the week. If you are printing this devotion and need it to be smaller, highlight and change to a smaller font.

If you know others who would be blessed by these devotions, you are welcome to forward them or let them know they can subscribe by sending a blank email to subscribers-on@aboverubies.org
