Apr. 16, 2009 - ~Friday Garden Club

In honor of the Friday garden club here are some of our homegrown salad greens......YUM.
And I can't forget to point out our eggs!  Julia just skipped her first day of laying today.  It took her 5 weeks to take a day off.  You go girl!

We've been growing our lettuce for a while now.  This is a necessity for our family.  Even if all the other veggies went I don't think the lettuce would.  We've got to have our lettuce!  The salad (above) was our dinner (hubby and I) last night.  Yummy....

And here is the next stage of our lettuce development.  My daughter has been harvesting our lettuce seeds for our Romaine lettuce.  It took nearly a year for these to go to seed but BOY are we getting a lot of seeds now!  If this works, it means we are learning and that is so incredibly exciting!  Not to mention we won't ever have to purchase lettuce seeds again

This past week has been pretty productive in the garden.  We've been able to plant several watermelon and cantaloupe and honey has also planted half of the garden bed he and the children made several months ago.  We weren't sure if we'd plant anything this spring/summer and sort of went back and forth in our decision making.  Finally he decided to plant a little and so this photo is of a few rows inside:

Just on the inside of the wood Hubby planted several special watermelon that has the potential of reaching 200 pounds.  Only two of the seven seeds have sprouted so far, but I figure two two-hundred pound watermelons is all anybody ever needs

The last three rows he planted corn, squash and cucumbers.  Do you know how exciting it is to see those little sprouts pop through?!  So far so good......

And here are a couple of my men creating our new blueberry barrier.  The blueberry bushes are doing wonderful and we didn't want to give the birds a chance to start munchin, so the guys got together and built a fenced in area.  The blueberries are now covered all around and on top as well.  I'll try to remember to upload the completed project pictures next week.  This is my two sweet hearts in the middle of the hard workin stage.

As far as an update on the rest of the garden......the onions are getting big, the tomatoes and peppers look good (Thank the Lord!), the beans are growing well (I have to give them something to climb on though), and our fruit trees are staying healthy and some are already producing fruit (a total of 10 peaches on the peach trees).  We also were blessed with two new additions this past week.  Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum the Blackberry sisters.  Hubby will work on putting those in the ground this coming weekend.

God's blessings!  Happy Gardening
