Unbelieveably Sad

Posted in News and Media

THIS is awful.

I hardly think that spaying and neutering would have changed the outcome.

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

...of knowing if spaying and/or neutering would have changed the outcome. Not knowing how "handicapped" this boy was makes it difficult to make a judgement call, in my book. The quote by the firefighter about the mom saying it was her fault makes *me* think, "of course she's gonna blame herself. what mom wouldn't?"

Jul. 19, 2006 - I don't know enough about dogs...

Posted by wakeforestmommy

...to know whether or not these "fixin'" them would have made a difference this day or not. What does stand out to me is that she took such great lengths to keep him away from the dogs. It seems obvious that she feared the dogs would attack him (again) or she wouldn't have given him the shovel to bar himself off from the dogs. It troubles me some that so much provision was made to keep the dogs away, that the dogs had bitten him twice before she left, and that she still left. It seems like she left a powder keg ready to explode. If she had left this same boy in a hot car to go grocery shopping and he died a passive death, she would be charged the same. It sounds like, from this article which is not the WHOLE story obviously, that she was neglectful in leaving her son exposed to these dogs in any way.

We had a chow-husky that showed it's teeth to me and snapped at me while I was pregnant. I loved that dog (it was my first pet!!), but our child came first and we found another home for him. Just my .02 :)

It is a sad, sad, and oh-so-tragic story.

This is sad. Forget the dogs for a minute, why didn't she take her son to the picnic? It seems to me that would have been the logical choice.

Agreed, Spunky. I think for homeschooling families, these type tragedies are all the more difficult to comprehend.
