High School Journalism
Are you interested in introducing real journalism for your high school homeschoolers? How do we go about empowering them to follow the journalist's path? Traditional schools often offer their own school newspaper - mine did and I wrote for our high school paper. As homeschoolers continue to blaze their own paths to include as many extra-curriculars as a traditional school setting provides, journalism should be right there as well.
If you belong to a homeschool support group, brain storm about a high school publication. Check out local newspapers to see if they have a program that introduces high schoolers to the journalism and newspaper publishing world. Our nearby metro area of Augusta has one that we are considering for our oldest son to apply for. They will have a board of 15-18 high school teens (from different areas and school backgrounds) who will work together on news and current events that are of interest and concern to the teens of today considered to be the next up and coming generation soon to enter adult life.
The Washington Post has a book that entails jumpstarting a journalism program at their own paper. While its focus was on promoting newspaper publishing in the local D.C. public schools, look for tools that can be applied to your own set of circumstances and goals for your journalists. High School Journalism.org looks to be a site worth perusing through as well for those of us with writers under our rooftops ~ be sure and check it out for yourselves.
If you have other journalism links that you've found of value, please leave a comment and post the web site and any pertinent information about it as well.
Thanks ~ have a great one!
