Memory Lane: Day Two
While the kids are watching a Moody Science Video, I thought I'd post a few pictures from our second day of vacation. I won't bore you to death with all of them. (hee, hee) We went to an airport museum in Arkansas. Personally, I was a bit hot from the Arkansas sunshine and a bit surprised that they charged a family of 5 $20 to see some old planes, but I think the kids had fun.

Jeff met a new friend.

Ryan learned to fly.

Grace and I shared a shady spot.

Oh, but before the air museum, we stopped by a friend's bakery in Fayetteville.
So the day was not a total loss. A day is never wasted spent with family, so old planes or not, it was a lovely day.
Love those mountains!

Homeschool Memoirs... 1st Assignment - "All About You"

Here's my first assignment... two weeks late. I wrote this out laaaate Sunday night/eaaaaaarly Monday morning (Sun., Aug. 31/Mon., Sept. 1), and I'm just now posting it to my blog.
Here's what the Homeschool Memoirs meme suggests. I will put their writing mostly in black font, and I haven't decided what color I will put my writing in...
The first theme begins today, August 20th, 2008. This week, we want to hear about YOU.
The author behind the words. I'm 37 years old and have been married for 15 years to my best friend. We can't remember when we met because we started out as acquaintances in college. Then, my roommate changed majors to the same major that my dh had. So, he and my roommate occasionally worked on class projects together... so I got to know him a little better. Then, we discovered that we both drove cars with an AM radio as the only source of music... not even FM or cassette. (And, this was long before ipods and the like.) As our friendship grew, we enjoyed spending time together. He graduated from college the year before I did and left to go to seminary. That's about when we decided that we "liked each other for more than a friend." And, the rest is history, so-to-speak.
The Momma behind all the homeschooling kiddos. Growing up, I always wanted to be a mother. Oh, I had dreams of being a figure skater and winning an Olympic medal. And, I thought maybe I'd be a nurse (my mother is an RN) or a teacher, but being a wife and mother was what I wanted to do more than the other things.
Just write up something about you.
your family, My husband and I have two daughters - ages 8 -1/2 and 6. They both have hair that is similar to mine in color and texture, although the younger one's hair is not quite as thick. Also, both girls have blue eyes at which my dh and I have wondered in amazement. (He and I have brown eyes.) Teasingly, we have said our older daughter has blue eyes because she was born in Minnesota (i.e. There are a lot of Scandinavian people there). But when our younger daughter's eyes remained blue, we were (and are) dumbfounded as to the genetic reasons. She was born in Tennessee. (We were taught that brown was dominant, but perhaps that is changing. If you know, please tell us!)
We also have a soon-to-be-11-yo border collie mix named Chip.
and your home. We live in a split-level house in a suburban-type area near Chattanooga, Tennessee. We've been here for nearly seven years.
How long you’ve been homeschooling - since our first daughter was born in February 2000
and why you decided to homeschool. - We decided to homeschool for many reasons... the main one being that we felt God leading us to do so.

Homeschool Memoirs or Blogger Class Mates... that *was* the question.

~ OR ~

NOTE: I wrote this entry off-line at 12:54 a.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2008. So, the date I'm referring to for Tuesday evening - would have been Tuesday, August 18, 2008.
It's the strangest thing -- Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning, I was all set to do my assignment for Blogger Class Mates. But, when I went to the Homeschool Blog Awards website, I saw something that looked like this:
Not having seen this:
I thought I was too early for the assignment. So, I think I checked back off and on, but I never could find the assignment. Then, I started seeing this "button"...

on others' blogs and began to put two and two together. But, until I finally saw this:
I don't think I realized that I was way behind! LOL (I don't know when I finally saw it.)
So, here it is... past my bedtime (as if I had one), and I'm debating with myself about how to write a clever post to get everyone to come see my blog and my assignment which is nearly four days overdue. (Let's see, that's 10 points off for each day that it's late... that drops it down to a 60 automatically. I'm in trouble! I wonder if there will be extra credit? Wait a minute... I hope not! If there is, then all the highly organized moms with lots of little ones running around will still get a higher grade. I still can't figure out how they do it. Maybe they have family close by. Or, maybe God made them that way. Or,... -- Oooooh, why do I second-guess myself about these things?!) Anyone noticing a trend here? It's not about me, but I'm supposed to blog about me.
I guess my assignment will receive a lower grade because I want to tell you more about me on a night when getting up the next day isn't something I really want to do. That doesn't even make sense. Oh well. Good night! |

Tuesday with Tirzah
I have decided as Tirzah's Mission Trip gets closer and CLOSER, that I would spend Tuesdays (as long as I remember) sharing with you what God is doing.
Last week she sent out her Support Letter. If you would like to read it, it is here. It is hard to believe that the dates are coming up so quickly. If you would like to be her prayer partner please leave a comment on her blog or if you would like to help sponsor her, there is a donation button on her blog as well.
It is about the Prayer part I would like to write today. You see Tirzah is flying to Southern California ALL BY HERSELF, on Friday. She will be spending a week getting to know her team, discovering how to work together and seeking her place among them. Africa she is ready for, flying by herself has her a bit let's say freaked! So she really needs prayers for Peace. Her daddy could use them too. Like Tirzah, he was good with Rwanda, but Orange County, not so much.
Please pray for Traveling mercies for her.
Pray she connects easily with her Great Aunt Christy
Ask God to fill her heart and then her mouth with His Words
Pray God would remind her HE alone has called her
Pray that she would be a blessing to her team and they to her
Pray that they walk in the Spirit and not the flesh.
Ask God to fill her/them with HIS vision for Rwandans
Pray for her family as they prepare her to Go into all the World
Tirzah will be gone from The 5th to the 13th of Sept beginning to take the steps that will lead her on a Mission she has been preparing for all year. Can by can, bottle by bottle, gift by gift she is trusting God to bring her to Rwanda and to the AIDS Orphans she loves.
Thank you for joining us in prayer.

Memory Lane: Vacation Day 1
I thought I'd do a day by day in pictures of our vacation, starting with the day we left. I can't believe we were on the road at daybreak. Our goal was to leave a little earlier, but in reality we left as soon as we were able.

And as always, the van was fully loaded down! Most of this is food for the road!

Since we are a low tech family, reading was the best way to pass the time.

Or sleeping..

The big deal for us is to reach the St. Louis Arch.

Someday we'd love to stop and explore this city. But this year we were headed to Arkansas. And more of our trip another time. Thanks for stopping by. |

Tightwad Tuesday~Cutting down the cost in cooking oil
I thought sense I made soooooooooooo much applesauce I would share a way to cut back the cost of cooking oil while baking. Now to some this is a TWT you have used for a long time but for some they may not know or have forgotten. You can use between 1/2 to 3/4ths of what they call for oil in a baking recipe with applesause. It is perfect for cakes and such. There has been times that I even replaced it all with applesauce. It has turned out GREAT.
Please also scroll down to the next post and see the Anti-Procrastination Challenge Meme for this week.
"There are only a few big ways to save money but there are a lot of small ways....that all adds up."
Please go visit these lovely ladies and glean some good tightwad tips from them.

Anti-Procrastination Challenge
Challenge
For definition and instructions for the meme' go HERE
Well I pray that your week with your projects were good. I have a confession to make. I need to take a extension on my project. With the canning and getting the learning room ready for school today I had to put the work on the future bathroom aside. I wouldn't say I procrastinated it is more like life happened and had to switch my priorities.
That is why I wrote a clause in my challenge explanation. ".....Sooo, you share it on your blog with us and a time frame you would "like" to get it done. ( doesn't mean you can't get that time frame extended if you need it). Well I have to say I need the extension ! I have been moving things around so I can move what I still want that I have been storing. I am not sure how much of a extension I need. I have more seed saving and canning to do. But I do want to get some done each week. I want my claw foot tub..... ASAP !!!

Weekend Company

It’s been an eventful past few days. No time for blogging or even checking email. When I finally turned on my pc just a few minutes ago, it was heart-warming to see that I’d had many friends visit me while I was gone!
We had company this weekend. Arriving Friday night was a family of six. There were children all about the same ages as ours. My oldest son, Matt, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for us Friday night. On Saturday, he made all of us scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes, bacon, and toast. And Sunday evening, he grilled filet mignons, made gourmet mashed potatoes, and veggies grilled on a skewer. What a blessing to have such a helpful son. (And gifted with a talent for cooking!)
I didn’t really know our weekend company all that well before Friday night. I wasn’t sure just what to expect, or how it was all going to go. I was a little bit nervous!! Having company for dinner and then everyone goes home at the end of the evening, is one thing; but to have company stay for the entire weekend until Monday afternoon is a completely different event!
The kids all played well together and we got to know our company a whole lot better. But the best part of the three day weekend was the amount of time I got to spend with my new grandbaby, Kayleen. I had oodles and oodles of snuggle time with my sweet, one-month-old g/b. Family time, friends, boating, good food, andlots of relaxing time to hold the baby – the weekend was everything I could have hoped for! |
