Our School Quilts
Posted in Crafts, Sewing, Cooking, Etc...
A few years ago I made my two
oldest kids (The baby wasn’t born yet.) School Quilts. I bought
school theme fabric and used them to brighten up our schoolroom.
At the time we lived in Northern California and had a guesthouse we
used for a schoolroom. Some days we would go out to do school and
it would be quite chilly until I kicked the heater on. But what
makes these quilts really special is not the pretty fabric on the
front, but what’s on the back. Every year on the last day of
school I have the kids sign their name on the back. We use a Rub
A Dub fabric marker and I write what grade they have completed next to
where they sign their name. It is so fun (& rewarding) to
look back and see how their handwriting has changed from year to
year. My favorite signature was my sons preschool year when he
spelled his entire name backwards! LOL I know these will become a
real treasure when they are grown.
So, what if you don’t sew or if you do you really don’t need another
quilt? (This is a common problem when you are a quilter.)
Well, how about trying this with the matte of a picture frame?
You could get an 8X10 or 11X14 matte and then make a photo collage of
their school years and have them sign the matte each year. If you
don’t want something to display you could start a scrapbook just for
this purpose. Each year add picture of the child on the last day
of school and have them sign under the picture. I’m sure there
are dozens of other ideas. The important thing is to make sure we
document these days. It is so easy to get so involved with the
day to day of schooling we forget to stop and make a memory.
Enjoy!

What she said. *laugh*
Seriously, I love this idea. I'm going to let it bounce around a bit in my brain... my boys are a bit more into knights and shields than quilts (and Mommy does not sew well), but I think it could work.
Thanks for sharing all your wonderful ideas! :)

Oh, that makes me sad about what my daughter did earlier this year. I had a composition book for her that she had written in and signed her name in over a couple of years. She wrote her own stories and it was a precious document of her learning. Until....she ripped it all out and threw it away when I didn't know about it. When I found I came unglued. Really unglued. I was so upset, that it was all lost. I know the child is more important but still, I was steaming. Oh- gets me worked up again, just thinking about it. Anyways, she got the big lecture about all her books being the property of me and her dad and she did not have permission to throw any of her school work away unless I gave it. Ugh!

If your kids are already pass the preschool years and you feel you don't want to start this midstream maybe you could find old papers they have written there name on and take them and get them photocopied. Then cut out the signatures and use them in a scrapbook or in some other creative way. It's never too late!

Thanks for such a wonderful idea. I am a quilter, or rather I quilted more before scrapbooking and stamping took over my life. LOL I think I could whip up two quilts (I have two boys) before our first school year starts in a few months. Again, what a great idea. Thank you for having a blog - I'm enjoying snooping around. :-)
