This is an exciting week at our house, we are attending Space Camp! One of our local homeschool Mother's has a 7 year old daughter who is really interested in Space. She contacted The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama and was able to get Space Camp to come to us!This morning was the 1st session and it was AWESOME!!!
We learned about the how flight came to be starting with Archemedies from 300 B.C. Then we learned how the Montgolifer Brothers, The Wright Brothers, Daniel Bernoulli and Isaac Newton all contributed to the Science of space travel. We launched a Hot Air Balloon, learned the difference between a space rendevous and a space docking. We learned about gravity, lift, drag and thrust and how all these things effect space flight. The greatest thing about all this was that it was very hands on and lots of kids got to come forward and be involved. The teacher is awesome and energetic! She started our by telling the kids that she was homeschooled and how much she loved homeschooling! The final thing we did was each kid got to make a steerable paper airplane. We can hardly wait until tomorrow!
I think the moral of this story is don't be afraid to ask if there is something out there you want for your children. This Mom saw on their website that they had a Space Camp in the Classroom program that they can do locally. She called and asked if they would be willing to travel cross country and they said YES! Believe it or not because of all the intrest in the Space Camp it actually turned out to be very inexpensive. We are paying $14.00 per child for 3 days of Camp! WOW!
Tomorrow I plan on taking my camera, so check back for pictures!
