Independence
Day is just around the corner and I thought I would share something
that has become a 4th of July tradition at our house. 1776 The
Movie.
We LOVE this movie! Originally a 1969
Broadway Musical it was made into a Movie in 1972. This is a
great, fun introduction to our Founding Fathers and the creation
of The Declaration of Independence. Each character is a presented
as a little bit larger than life and the songs are a hoot! One
viewing of this and my kids had a much better idea of who did what to
get our Country started. Whether it's Ben Franklin spouting off his wise phrases or Thomas Jefferson missing his wife
so much he can't think to write, this movie really brings these people
to life! My kids will never forget the Founding Fathers arguing
over whether the Eagle or the Turkey should be the National Bird!
(Ben Franklin really wanted the Turkey!) One of our favorite
songs is Lee of Old Virginia
this song took a character from history that was fairly unknown to our
family and made him one of our favorites. My 5 and 11 yo both
love belting this one out along with the movie! LOL I
highly recommend this movie as a great addtion to your fireworks and
BBQ on the 4th!
One caution there is a wee bit of sexual
innuendo. Nothing I find objectionable, the innuendo is mostly along
the lines of Jefferson tells Adams that he "burns" for his wife. There
is a little bit of mild language used when they delegates are arguing
their cases. It is rate PG.
One another note:
Regarding yesterdays post...Many of you have asked me how long it took
to read through 119 blogs...I spent about 6 hours doing it!
LOL My dh was working the evening shift and we had a really busy
week. I decided I was taking an evening off. I put my feet
up popped open my laptop and visited ALL my friends! It was
really fun too! I started about 4:00 and finished about
midnight! I took several breaks to make sandwiches and put kids
to bed. For the most part the kids were cooperative about giving
me a night off. I know I can't do it too often, but I will do it
again! (Someday!)
hi!!! two things:
1: thanks for the movie idea for July 4!
2: what a sweetie you are to not only visit all your HSB friends' blogs, but to also pray for us! wow! you are a beautiful person and beautiful example of the love of Christ! please know that we are praying for you too!
What a great suggestion for the Fourth! I saw that movie when it first came out, and have loved it ever since. I've also been a fan of Ken Howard and Blythe Danner ever since.
You are right that it really brings the entire process of writing the Declaration of Independence to life. I'm glad you have introduced this movie to your kids while they're young. I had my older two watch in when they were teens, and they didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
What you've written has made me want to watch it again :) Too bad the library is closed today, or I'd go check it out!
We have homeschooled our children from the start and we love every minute of it! This is my place to share my thoughts on homeschooling, my kids and living for the Lord. All the while being a little outside the box!!
