The kids and I started reading The Wizard of Oz a couple of days ago. A few minutes into the first chapter I started thinking "This would be a fun lapbook!" So I posted on the Yahoo Lapbooking Group I am in and boy did they have a LOT of great ideas!!!!Yesterday the kids and I made Cyclones in a bottle.
I got the info on how to do this from the Exploratorium website. I didn't follow their directions exactly. We have water bottles instead of 2 liter bottles and I didn't have the washers. I cut a circle from the side of a milk jug the size of the bottle lid. Then we used a hole punch to make a whole in the center. We used Duct tape to hold the 2 bottles together. The Cyclone part worked great. The kids did them over and over and then put them aside to show Dad when he got home. They did leak a bit, but I gave them each towel so it was no big deal.
So far the other things we are studying for the lapbook are:
L. Frank Baum
Kansas
Cyclones
The Heart
The Brain
And we have only read through chapter 4! Wow, some of the other suggestions are a study on gems, hot air balloons, dwarfism, silver (The shoes in the book are silver not ruby!), life in the 1900's, sufferage (Baum's mil was a leading suffregette), Make up words using the letters from "The Wizard of Oz" there are at least 64! ....
Here is an AMAZING site with more ideas than I could ever imagine! I think you could do a whole schoolyear based on this book! LOL
Oh, this is going to be FUN!!!!!!
