Here is something the kids and I like to do...One of us will start a story. These are stories that are no way based in reality. In these stories animals can talk and The President of The United States (President George as my 5 yo calls him.) frequently visits our home. After one person has started the story for example..."One day I was walking down the street and ran into President George. He was so surprised to see me and asked if he could come over for dinner." Then it is time for the next person to add to the story. We keep going until each of us have added to the story 1 or 2 times. The person that started the story gets to end it by wrapping it up and saying THE END! We do have a few rules. The stories cannot be mean spirited or gory and no one gets to kill off any of there siblings! LOL (Not that any of my little angels would try that! Yeah, right, sure! ) This has been fun way to see my kids use their imaginations and verbal skills. It also gives me a glimpse into what they know. For example, I had no idea my daughter knew the Presidents 1st name until she used it in a story.
Another variation on this is to tell a "Choices Story". When I do these I tell the whole story but I stop at crucial points and give the kids choices. I might say "One day I was walking down the street and met ...The President, a jaguar or a hippopatamus?" Once they make a choice I continue the story based around their choices. The stories are usually pretty crazy and I an usually count on the kids to make the choice that will take the story to the silliest place! LOL
