Posted in Lessons I Have Learned
My daughter is 5 and 1/2. She was 6 months old on Sept. 11, 2001. I remember wondering what kind of world she would grow up in that day.....Yesterday I was wondering if she had any idea about the terrorist attacks that had happened 5 years ago. I asked her if she had heard any of the things Daddy and I had been watching on the news lately. She looked puzzled and then replied "No". Then I asked her if she knew what freedom meant. She replied "Oh, yes Mommy, it means I can run as fast as I want and no one will stop me!" Her answer nearly took my breath away! She was right, that is what freedom means! It means to be free to do whatever we choose to do!
We have so much freedom in the USA that we don't even think about it. Freedom to wear what we want. To pray anywhere to any God we chose. Freedom to love and marry (or not marry) who we please. Freedom to have as many or as few children as we like. Freedom to get and education and have whatever career we choose. Freedom to educate our children at home....Freedom to write whatever words we want to share and put them in a place that anyone can read them. The freedom to run as fast as we want and no one will stop us! Freedom!
5 years ago yesterday terrorists tried to take that freedom away from us. They failed. I don't think they get it. Freedom is not something we have. It is who we are! We live in a land where we have so much choice we don't even think about our choices!
I have spent much of the last 4 days reading the 2996 tributes to the victims of the 9-11 attacks. One thing that I have learned in these last 4 days is the America was cheated out of some really wonderful people that day. People who loved this Counrty, their families and friends. People who worked hard to make this Country what it is. People who where just like you and me.
I am so greatful to all the men and women who are serving our Country in the United States Military. I am greatful to their families for the sacrifices they have made to ensure my freedom.
God Bless America.....

If you have not read through any of these amazing tributes I would encourage you to do so. I have been touched deeply by getting to know some of these 2996 people who hve been stolen from us. I know that 9-11 will have an even deeper meaning to me each year after reading about the lives of so many of these people we lost. I know that after reading these I will forever take my freedom a little less for granted. I pray today we will all run as fast as we want without anyone stopping us...
Here is my daughter running and flying her kite yesterday at the park.

“Instead of just searching for criminals, the night patrols were instructed to seek out people watching videos, playing cards or, bizarrely, keeping caged birds. Men without long enough beards were to be arrested, as was any woman who dared venture outside her house. Even owning a kite became a criminal offence.”
