Here is what I use for a numberline when my kids are 1st learning to add and aubtract. A Carpenters Ruler.
I bought this one years ago at the $1.00 store. Since the numbers go up to 60 you can use it to solve lots of Math problems! It's easy to fold up and carry, doesn't have to be posted on the wall taking up precious space and it's cheap!
So how do you use a numberline? Say you have the problem 16+5. Find the number 16 on the numberline and count up 5 numbers to 21. Now you know that 16+5=21. Want to subtract? Find the number and count backwards. So, if you had 16-5, you would count back and see it equals 11! This is an excellent tool to show a concrete way of adding or subtracting. If they can count they can now add and subtract too!
