10 Commandments Lapbook

Posted in Lapbooks

My 5 year old daughter and I finished her 10 Commandments Lapbook!

Here is the cover:

This is what you see when you open the folder.  This was a good chance to introduce her to the concept of Roman Numerals.  (I did this by sewing the 2 folders together on the fold.  I used a plate to make the circle shaped top.)

On the inside we used the graphics from this pdf file
They are these clever little pictures that help you associate a picture with the meaning of the commandment.  My daughter was able to memorize these lickety split!

Inside we wrote what each Commandment is in her own words.  My favotire it 7 "Only date your own husband!" for "Do Not Commit Adultry!"

This is the inside left side with the extension pulled down.  In this we have a picture that shows the Commandments split up showing which are about our relationship with God and which are about our relationship with Man.  Here is the link.
The next one down is 10 Commandments quiz to see if you really know them.  (She aced it!  Hooray!!!)  The one with the little Bible is a list of what she thought the 10 Commandments might be before we studied them.  (These are quite funny!  I will list them below.)  The bottom flap has a little Moses Maze in it.

This side we made a Ark Of The Covenenat our of craft sticks. We also have a paragragh at the top telling about the Ark.  Inside is scrolls I printed from here:  http://gardenofpraise.com/mempeg2.htm     On the bottom part of the flap is some pictures she colored depicting scences from the life of Moses.  Then there is a poem I wrote.  (See below.)  At the very bottom is a word search my daughter did.

These are what my daughter thought the 10 Commandments were before we studied them:

1. Be Good
2. Obey Your Parents
3. Stay In School
4. Do Not Want What Others Have
5. Don't Be Mean
6.  Don't Steal
7.  Don't Rob Banks
8.  Don't Kidnap Dogs (This is my favorite!  LOL)
9.  Believe In God
10.  Don't Be Sad

When we were putting the pictures my daughter had drawn together in a booklet I wanted to put info on Moses in it.  I wanted Moses story in simple words so I can read it to her when we look through her lapbook.  I started looking for a poem that told the story and could not find one.  So....I decided to write my own!  Here it is...

Moses

Just a little baby, whom Pharaoh sought to kill.
Loved so much by his family, who was trying to do God’s will.
They put him in a basket, and send him down the Nile.
Knowing God’s hands would be there,  to protect him all the while.

Their faith was surely honored, as Pharaohs daughter drew him out,
I will name you Moses was her delighted shout.
She raised him at the Palace; He was Royalty all the way.
He never knew he was Hebrew, until one faithful day.

An accident, or anger?  A Hebrew Slave lay dead,
And somehow in the chaos the words swam in his head.
“Moses, you are Hebrew, my brother whom I love!”
Were her words the truth, sent from God above?

More than he could handle, about the life he knew.
He went into the desert and found a love so true….
But, God had plans for Moses, no matter where he stood.
And speaking from a burning bush Moses understood.

Moses tried to talk some reason, to God who spoke to him,
But soon he learned what God wanted, he must obey God’s whim.
So off he went to Egypt…To tell Pharaoh how things should be!
Off he went to speak for God saying “Set MY people FREE!”

Pharaoh didn’t want to hear it; he didn’t like one word!
But, Moses never wavered at what he understood.
He tried all kinds of reasoning, he tried a lot of plagues.
But it seemed whatever happened Pharaoh never gave!

Finally, it was too much and God to Moses said
“Above the door each Hebrew must spread the blood so red.”
That night the cries could be heard as death passed over the land.
All the firstborn Hebrews did not suffer from God’s hand.

At last it was enough!  Pharaoh bid them farewell….
But, soon he would be following, trying to seal their fate as well.
Again God spoke to Moses, and through him he parted the sea!
The Hebrews walked through the water and they were finally FREE!!!

But their troubles were not over as they wandered to and fro
Now that they were free where were they to go?
God never did abandon them he gave them all they needed,
Manna came 6 days a week, just as he commanded.

Then to Mt Sinai once again Moses met with God.
This time he gave instructions, some which seemed quite hard.
They were the 10 Commandments, a guide on how to live.
It was because he loved us that these he did give.

God’s love was so amazing, and it still is today,
So much He loved his people His Son he sent to save!
So blessed are those that trust Him, for salvation they will gain…
To live for all eternity in His heavenly reign!

thanks for the heads-up ... my boys do not have all the 10 commandments "down" if you will, nor do we always get them in the right order.
I will take some time this afternoon to look at your lapbook more closely.
We really like lapbooks here; stumbled on them last year at a homeschool workshop, and had the boys make one each for their Cub Scout group and we heard rave reviews from the leaders.
I wonder they don't use this idea in P.S.?
anyway, I don't have to worry about that.

Wow, Jammin, what a cool lap book. While I don't prescribe to the bible per se I still believe in God and I think it is very important for my children to learn the 10 Commandments. I think I'll be adding this to my growing list of subjects for lap books. :D

These are sooooo cute, I was thinking of doing a similar lapbook with the tablet curve at the top! Great minds think alike! I love that you asked your daughter what she thought the ten commandments were before she did them! That is super sweet, and makes a great keepsake part of your lapbook! Thanks for sharing!

In Christ,

Jul. 8, 2009 - Link Question

Posted by Anonymous

Hi!

I’m way new to lapbooking. In fact this one will be one of the first I’ve ever done. I was trying to open the link for the graphics of the little pictures that help the children remember the commandment but I couldn’t get it to open. I was hoping to start on this next week if I could get everything together. Is there another way to get the .pdf file or am I just doing something wrong?

http://www.livingwaters.com/downloads/10Commandments_forkids-FLIPCHART.pdf

Thanks for the inspiration!

Sadly it looks as if they have removed that file from their site. I have been looking for another similar one and haven't found anything yet. I will keep looking and post a new link if I find one.

Jul. 11, 2009 - Ten commandments link that doesn't work.

The link didn't work but I did find the ten commandments on the "living water" site.
I went to the home page, click on resources then downloads.
Thanks for all your inspiration. We have just finished a lapbook using sea creatures incorporating the "Roman Road" verses for our holiday program.

This is a wonderful project. I teach in a small Christian school and this fits perfectly into my Bible. Thanks for all of the great ideas. We do alot of different projects, but for some reason I never thought of compiling them into one book. Thanks for sharing it.
